    Culture and Customs of Egypt

    No full text
Modern Egypt blends African history and geography with Arab culture and religion. With its position at the crossroads of Africa, its status as a major Islamic nation, and continuing interest in its ancient monuments, Egypt makes for fascinating study. This volume provides an accessible, up-to-date overview of a society that greatly evolved, yet retains traces of attitudes and behaviors from the days of the Pharaohs. This volume\u27s insights into everyday life, sociopolitical structures, and cultural institutions transcend ordinary guide books. Asante, a noted Africanist, presents the richness of Egypt from the Nile to the Nubian influence, to Cairo congestion and carpet schools. Chapters describe the land, people, history, education, tourism, religion, art and architecture, food, social customs and lifestyles, literature, media, cinema, and performing arts. A chronology, glossary, and numerous photos enhance the text.https://digitalcommons.pepperdine.edu/alumni_books/1026/thumbnail.jp

The Idea of the Human Soul in Ancient Egypt

    No full text
The idea of soul is central in the narrative of ancient Egyptians especially as it relates to the idea of eternal life. Questions about what happens after death to the body and whether there is any aspect of the human being that lives after the khat is dead are concerns about life rather than about death itself. The complexity of the concept of human being for ancient Egyptians shows that the objective of the human is tohold back the chaos that comes when one is not prepared to live eternally. Therefore, creating the conditions for a truly everlasting future is the work of the physical lifetime.O conceito de alma é um tema central na narrativa dos antigos Egípcios principalmente por estar relacionado com a ideia de vida eterna.

The African struggle to abandon westernity: African philosophy at Eshuean crossroads

    No full text
This essay deals with the ideas of Ifeanyi Menkiti and Kwame Gyekye on the individual-community relationship. I begin with a provocative statement: most African intellectuals struggle with abandoning Westernity and consequently remain at the Eshuean crossroads seeking to please both sides of the abyss. It is my argument that both Menkiti and Gyekye understood that teasing out our philosophical problems might lead us to an intellectual clarity about the concepts of community and individual in African cultures. I am making no attempt to solve this problem of Eshuean crossroads in this essay; I simply want to establish the grounds upon which the combatants of philosophical ideas like Menkiti and Gyekye are fighting. Keywords: Westernity, Ifeanyi Menkiti, Kwame Gyekye, Eshuean Crossroads, Afric
