The ceramic found at PixareJles Cave provides an excellent assemblage to study pottery-making traditions in Catalonia from Late Neolithic to Late Bronze Age. The present study has been carried out by combining a typological and stylistical study and petrografic analysis. Several fabrics, according to composition and texture, have been characterised. These fabrics reflect the use of different raw materials -according to different raw materials procurement strategies- and different paste recipes, indicating an interesting complexity for the pottery-making traditions within the area of study

"Better Safe than Sorry" - Individual Risk-free Pension Schemes in the European Union - Macroeconomic Benefits, the Mobile Working Citizen's Perspective and Why Nots

Variations between the diverse pension systems in the member states of the European Union hamper labour market mobility, across country borders but also within the countries of the European Union. From a macroeconomic perspective, and in the light of demographic pressure, this paper argues that allowing individual instead of collective pension building would greatly improve labour market flexibility and thus enhance the functioning of the monetary union. I argue that working citizens would benefit, for three reasons, from pension saving in a risk-free savings account. First, citizens would have a clear picture of the accumulation of their own pension savings throughout their working life. Second, they would pay hardly any extra costs and, third, once retired they would not be subject to the whims of government or other pension fund managers. This paper investigates the feasibility of individual pension building under various parameter settings by calculating the pension saved during a working life and the pension dis-saved after retirement. The findings show that there are no reasons why the European Union and individual member states should not allow individual risk-free pension savings accounts. This would have macroeconomic benefits and provide a solid pension provision that can enhance mobility, instead of engaging workers in different mandatory collective pension schemes that exist around in the European Union

Objective: The NAOS (Nutrición, Actividad Física y Prevención de la Obesidad) strategy implemented by Spanish Ministry of Health proposes a range of healthy dietary guidelines. The objective of this article is to analyze the degree these nutritional patterns are monitored by the Roma population, compared to the rest of the population, compared to the total Spanish population. Methods: Data from the 2012 National Health Survey and the 2014 Roma Health Survey were compared. Sex, age and socio-occupational scale were used as independent variables, applying a logistic regression analysis to assess their degree of influence. Results: There was less monitoring carried out by the Roma population of the dietary plans recommended by the Ministry of Health and differences of more of 20 percentage points were found in some of them. In both populations, age was the variable with the greatest influence, but even more so in the Roma population, while sex did not show statistical among Roma people. The follow-up data of these dietary patterns in the Roma population were lower in comparison with any of the socio-occupational groups of the rest of the population. Conclusions: The Roma population is in a situation of inequality as regards the levels of adherence of the healthy dietary guidelines proposed by the Spanish NAOS strategy. The distance from these healthy eating habits is even greater among the younger Roma population

Investigating Ka-band science data transfer for BepiColombo mission by using radiometeorological numerical models

Deep space (DS) exploration is aimed at acquiring information about the solar system and its composition, a purpose that can be achieved only if a significant communication capacity can be provided to spacecrafts at very large distances [1]. The Ka-band (at 32-34 GHz) and higher frequency band channels can provide this capacity if compared to the current X-band (around 8.4 GHz) [2]-[4]. Ka-band can offer a striking performance advantage over X-band because of the square-frequency law increase of directivity of the downlink beam for the same physical antenna size. This opens up a possible and useful trade space for Ka-band missions with the same antenna size (and spacecraft constraints) and radio frequency power, since a Ka-band mission can return four times more data than a comparable X–band mission. For the European Space Agency (ESA), the next step in this direction will be the utilisation of Ka-band downlinks both to generate radiometric observables (in combination with X-band uplink) as well as to increase science data transfer [5]. The first satellite mission adopting such frequency operationally will be BepiColombo (BC), the ESA cornerstone mission to Mercury (expected launch in 2015) including the Mercury Orbiter Radio Experiment (MORE) at X-Ka band [6]. The optimal allocation of channel resources above Ku band is limited by the significant impact of radio- meteorological factors which can irremediably degrade the quality of service for fairly high percentage of time [7]. At Ka band, for instance, attenuation due to cloudy and rainy troposphere can be even one order of magnitude larger than at X-band. The major cause of outages at Ka band and above is due to rainfall, as well as non-precipitating clouds. For small carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR), the impact of atmospheric noise temperature can become non-negligible [4]. In order to achieve the optimum data return at Ka-band, a different approach with respect to the link budget computation at lower frequencies (e.g., S or X band) is necessary [2]. Such link analysis is based on the maximization of the expected data return in a probabilistic framework rather than on a specified link statistical availability. Recent methods uses monthly statistics collected at the receiving site with the aim of defining average values of expected received data volume [5] and the exploitation of numerical weather forecasting is also foreseen [3]. This paper introduces the preliminary concept of the RadioMetOP (RadioMeteorological Operations Planner) technique and describes its main modelling components and objectives, limiting the analysis to rainfall effects. Numerical results in terms of received frame data for unconstrained and constrained system scenarios are also described together with a discussion about the possible impact of RadioMetOP methods on BC operations

D3MOBILE METROLOGY WORLD LEAGUE: TRAINING SECONDARY STUDENTS ON SMARTPHONE-BASED PHOTOGRAMMETRY

The advent of the smartphones brought with them higher processing capabilities and improved camera specifications which boosted the applications of mobile-based imagery in a range of domains. One of them is the 3-D reconstruction of objects by means of photogrammetry, which now enjoys great popularity. This fact brings potential opportunities to develop educational procedures in high schools using smartphone-based 3-D scanning techniques. On this basis, we designed a Project Based e-Learning (PBeL) initiative to introduce secondary students to the disciplines of photogrammetry through the use of their mobile phones in an attractive and challenging way for them. The paper describes the motivation behind the project "D3MOBILE Metrology World League", supported by ISPRS as part of the "Educational and Capacity Building Initiative 2020"programme. With this Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) initiative, we implement a methodology with the format of an international competition, that can be adapted to daily classwork at the high school level anywhere in the world. Therefore, the championship is essentially structured around a collection of well-thought-out e-learning materials (text guidelines, video tutorials, proposed exercises, etc.), providing a more flexible access to content and instruction at any time and from any place. The methodology allows students to gain spatial skills and to practice other transversal abilities, learn the basics of photogrammetric techniques and workflows, gain experience in the 3-D modelling of simple objects and practice a range of techniques related to the science of measurementS
