    The effect of electro-magnetic radiation on certain varieties of soybean seeds

    Ever since electricity was discovered, man has attempted to study its effect on plant and animal life. Different principles and methods have been employed to improve crop plants mth electricity, but the reported results are contradictory except in the case of seed germination. An increase in rate and percent germination of seeds with hard coats, like alfalfa, due to electrical treatment have been reported by several workers. Treatment of certain other seeds including soybeans, cotton and corn have been reported to give a faster rate of germination although the final germination percent was not always affected. Earlier studies at the University of Tennessee by the Farm Electrification Research Branch, Agricultural Research Service, indicated that electrically treated seeds of soybeans showed a higher and faster adsorption of water when placed in contact with free water than the untreated seeds. It was also reported that the treated seed germinated faster, but the final per cent germination in the laboratory and field conditions were not greatly influenced by electrical treatment. Also no difference in yield was reported. Experiments reported here were conducted to further determine the effects of electrical treatment of soybean seed and to determine the response of various varieties of soybeans to electrical treatment including seed germination, respiration, and growth

    Feasibility of a novel exercise prehabilitation programme in patients scheduled for elective colorectal surgery: a feasibility randomised controlled trial

Background and objectives: To investigate the feasibility of delivering a functional exercise-based prehabilitation intervention and its effects on postoperative length of hospital stay, preoperative physical functioning and health-related quality of life in elective colorectal surgery. Materials and methods: In this randomised controlled feasibility trial, 22 elective colorectal surgery patients were randomly assigned to exercise prehabilitation (n = 11) or standard care (n = 11). Feasibility of delivering the intervention was assessed based on recruitment and compliance to the intervention. Impact on postoperative length of hospital stay and complications, preoperative physical functioning (timed up and go test, five times sit to stand, stair climb test, handgrip dynamometry and 6-min walk test) and health-related quality of life were also assessed. Results: Over 42% of patients (84/198) screened were deemed ineligible for prehabilitation due to insufficient time existing prior to scheduled surgery. Of those who were eligible, approximately 18% consented to the trial. Median length of hospital stay was 8 [range 6–27] and 10 [range 5–12] days respectively for the standard care and prehabilitation groups. Patterns towards preoperative improvements for the timed up and go test, stair climb test and 6-min walk test were observed for all participants receiving prehabilitation but not standard care. Conclusions: Despite prehabilitation appearing to convey positive benefits on physical functioning, short surgical wait times and patient engagement represent major obstacles to implementing exercise prehabilitation programmes in colorectal cancer patients

    New insights into method development and characterization of amorphous silica from wheat straw

    Amorphous silica, a specialised silicate adsorbent is extensively extracted from agricultural residues for application in various environmental domains. Wheat straws are a rich source of silica that have earlier been overlooked however demand for value addition. The study presents an innovative approach to extracting silica from wheat straw and standardising the extraction process to produce clean product. The sodium silicate solution and the amorphous silica synthesis were obtained by modifying the template mediated sol–gel method. Optimum temperature, concentration and pH were identified for the cleaner production of silica with maximum yield and favourable adsorbent characteristics. The crystallographic properties analysed by the X-Ray Diffraction revealed the amorphous nature of silica extracted from ash at 650 °C for 4 h. The structure of phytolith present in the wheat straw was observed in the form of articulated elongate undulate epidermal phytolith under scanning electron microscopy. The Energy Dispersive X-ray spectrum exhibited higher amount of silica (Si %) of 70.10% with a minimal percentage of potassium (9.96%). The sharp bend at 1025 cm−1 is attributed to the siloxane (Si–O-Si) vibrations in Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic graph of amorphous silica. The specific surface area measurements of amorphous silica showed type II isotherm curve with a hysteresis of H3 type. The optimum conditions derived to produce amorphous silica were 3 M NaOH and 3 M H2SO4 at pH 9

    Integrated Assessment of Climate Change Impacts on Maize Farms and Farm Household Incomes in South India: A Case Study from Tamil Nadu

    South India is characterized by a wide variety of landscapes, soils and climatic zones. It is comprised of tropical, semi-arid, humid-moist, and high-altitude environments, which support a diversity of agricultural systems. Our study focused on the state of Tamil Nadu, which is characterized by a generally tropical climate, and receive rainfall during both the southwest monsoon season (SWM, June to September) and the northeast monsoon (NEM, September to December). Agriculture continues to be an important sector in the state economy, as more than 56 of the people depend on agriculture and allied sectors for their livelihood. Analysis of land-use patterns in Tamil Nadu reveals that in the past decade there has been a reduction in net sown area and current fallow, while the share of cultivable wastelands has increased. The area under cereals, pulses, and oilseeds had marginally declined, although area under commercial crops like turmeric, sugar-cane, banana, fruits, and vegetables has shown an increasing trend. The production performance of major crops like cereals, pulses, and oilseeds has not shown any significant increase. Demand and supply gap of important crops in Tamil Nadu for the year 2010 indicates that the state is lagging far behind in the production of various crops
