    Evaluation of Physical and Mechanical Properties of Selected Wood Species obtained from Saw Mills in Akure, Nigeria

    The strength and sorption properties of selected wood species obtained from saw mills in Akure Nigeria were investigated based on key index properties such as density, bending strength and dimensional stability using appropriate standard experimental techniques. Data obtained from the experimental investigation revealed that the wood species ranged from low density 442.8 kg/m3 for Terminalia superba (Afara), through medium density 464 kg/m3 and 552.8 kg/m3 for Pycnanthus angolensis (Akomu) and Gmelina arborea (Gmelina) respectively, to high density 635.7kg/m3 and 678.2 kg/m3 for Milicia excelsa (Iroko) and Stereospermum acuminatissimum (Omo cedar) respectively. The bending strength values obtained qualified the wood species classification into low bending strength (25 N/mm2 – 75 N/mm2 ) for Afara, Akomu and Gmelina and the medium static bending strength in the range (75 N/mm2 – 125 N/mm2) for Iroko and Omo cedar. Furthermore, results of volumetric shrinkage and swelling are 7.21%: 5.04%, 7.75%: 5.26% and 7.84%: 6.69% for Afara, Akomu and Gmelina respectively while Iroko and Omo cedar recorded 10.95%: 7.84% and 11.08%: 11.08%. These updated results could be useful for wood selection for building construction application; for structural members in roofing, posts and beams

    Gastrin is well known as a gastric acid secreting agent and trophic factor, but the complexity and plasticity of the mechanisms behind its effects need elucidation. For instance, whether the effects depend on vagal innervation is still an open question. In the present report, we describe in technical detail a rat model of gastrocystoplasty and fundectomy with the hope that it will provide an additional tool in gastrin research and an example of experimental surgery

    Global health education: a pilot in trans-disciplinary, digital instruction

    Background: The development of new global health academic programs provides unique opportunities to create innovative educational approaches within and across universities. Recent evidence suggests that digital media technologies may provide feasible and cost-effective alternatives to traditional classroom instruction; yet, many emerging global health academic programs lag behind in the utilization of modern technologies. Objective: We created an inter-departmental University of Southern California (USC) collaboration to develop and implement a course focused on digital media and global health. Design: Course curriculum was based on core tenants of modern education: multi-disciplinary, technologically advanced, learner-centered, and professional application of knowledge. Student and university evaluations were reviewed to qualitatively assess course satisfaction and educational outcomes. Results: ‘New Media for Global Health’ ran for 18 weeks in the Spring 2012 semester with N=41 students (56.1% global health and 43.9% digital studies students). The course resulted in a number of high quality global health-related digital media products available at http://iml420.wordpress.com/. Challenges confronted at USC included administrative challenges related to co-teaching and frustration from students conditioned to a rigid system of teacher-led learning within a specific discipline. Quantitative and qualitative course evaluations reflected positive feedback for the course instructors and mixed reviews for the organization of the course. Conclusion: The development of innovative educational programs in global health requires on-going experimentation and information sharing across departments and universities. Digital media technologies may have implications for future efforts to improve global health education

    The place of values in the aims of school science education

    Debates about the aims of school science education are perennial (e.g., Reiss & White, 2014; see also Kidman & Fensham, Chapter “ Intended, Achieved and Unachieved Values of Science Education” this volume), particularly in Western cultures. In this chapter we review some of these arguments about the aims of school science education, and look at what has changed in the last decade since one of us (Michael) considered a similar debate (see Reiss, 2007). We have situated this review of arguments in current global circumstances including rapid technological advances, a continuing demand for workers with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) qualifications and the increasing acknowledgement of the deeply worrying effects that humans have on the Earth’s ecology, and indeed its future. Part of our argument is that decisions about the aims of school science education are inevitably decisions about values in education in general and values in school science education more specifically. This means that for a country, a group of schools, an individual school or a classroom teacher to come to a view about the aims of science education in the classroom is to have made a judgement, implicitly or explicitly, about values

    Incidence of HIV and hepatitis C virus among people who inject drugs, and associations with age and sex or gender: a global systematic review and meta-analysis

    Background: Measuring the incidence of HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection among people who inject drugs (PWID) is key to track progress towards elimination. We aimed to summarise global data on HIV and primary HCV incidence among PWID and associations with age and sex or gender. Methods: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we updated an existing database of HIV and HCV incidence studies among PWID by searching MEDLINE, Embase, and PsycINFO, capturing studies published between Jan 1, 2000, and Dec 12, 2022, with no language or study design restrictions. We contacted authors of identified studies for unpublished or updated data. We included studies that estimated incidence by longitudinally re-testing people at risk of infection or by using assays for recent infection. We pooled incidence and relative risk (RR; young [generally defined as ≤25 years] vs older PWID; women vs men) estimates using random-effects meta-analysis and assessed risk of bias with a modified Newcastle–Ottawa scale. This study is registered with PROSPERO, CRD42020220884. Findings: Our updated search identified 9493 publications, of which 211 were eligible for full-text review. An additional 377 full-text records from our existing database and five records identified through cross-referencing were assessed. Including 28 unpublished records, 125 records met the inclusion criteria. We identified 64 estimates of HIV incidence (30 from high-income countries [HICs] and 34 from low-income or middle-income countries [LMICs]) and 66 estimates of HCV incidence (52 from HICs and 14 from LMICs). 41 (64%) of 64 HIV and 42 (64%) of 66 HCV estimates were from single cities rather than being multi-city or nationwide. Estimates were measured over 1987–2021 for HIV and 1992–2021 for HCV. Pooled HIV incidence was 1·7 per 100 person-years (95% CI 1·3–2·3; I2=98·4%) and pooled HCV incidence was 12·1 per 100 person-years (10·0–14·6; I2=97·2%). Young PWID had a greater risk of HIV (RR 1·5, 95% CI 1·2–1·8; I2=66·9%) and HCV (1·5, 1·3–1·8; I2=70·6%) acquisition than older PWID. Women had a greater risk of HIV (RR 1·4, 95% CI 1·1–1·6; I2=55·3%) and HCV (1·2, 1·1–1·3; I2=43·3%) acquisition than men. For both HIV and HCV, the median risk-of-bias score was 6 (IQR 6–7), indicating moderate risk. Interpretation: Although sparse, available HIV and HCV incidence estimates offer insights into global levels of HIV and HCV transmission among PWID. Intensified efforts are needed to keep track of the HIV and HCV epidemics among PWID and to expand access to age-appropriate and gender-appropriate prevention services that serve young PWID and women who inject drugs.     Carbon Nanotube Solar Cells

    We present proof-of-concept all-carbon solar cells. They are made of a photoactive side of predominantly semiconducting nanotubes for photoconversion and a counter electrode made of a natural mixture of carbon nanotubes or graphite, connected by a liquid electrolyte through a redox reaction. The cells do not require rare source materials such as In or Pt, nor high-grade semiconductor processing equipment, do not rely on dye for photoconversion and therefore do not bleach, and are easy to fabricate using a spray-paint technique. We observe that cells with a lower concentration of carbon nanotubes on the active semiconducting electrode perform better than cells with a higher concentration of nanotubes. This effect is contrary to the expectation that a larger number of nanotubes would lead to more photoconversion and therefore more power generation. We attribute this to the presence of metallic nanotubes that provide a short for photo-excited electrons, bypassing the load. We demonstrate optimization strategies that improve cell efficiency by orders of magnitude. Once it is possible to make semiconducting-only carbon nanotube films, that may provide the greatest efficiency improvement
