    Architecture and evaluation of a unified V2V and V2I communication system based on cellular networks

    Vehicle communications are becoming the cornerstone in the future vehicle equipment. More specifically, vehicle to vehicle communications (V2V) are the main object of researching nowadays, because vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) approximations are already being developed as commercial solutions. Cellular networks (CN) are usually applied in V2I solutions, whereas ad hoc networks are practically the only technology considered in V2V communications. Due to fact that CN are currently a reality and the operators are continuously improving the network, this communication technology could be considered as a candidate to deal with V2V necessities as well. The present paper defends the applicability of CN in the V2V field, and presents a novel communication paradigm for vehicles which unifies both V2V and V2I paradigms into one system. A peer to peer network technology has been used over the CN basis to create a group-based communication infrastructure which enables the message propagation among vehicles and between the car and the road side infrastructure.     Refractive Properties of Binary Mixtures Formed by an Isomer of Chlorobutane and Butyl Ethyl Ether

    Refractive indices of the binary mixtures containing an isomer of chlorobutane (1-chlorobutane, 2-chlorobutane, 2-methyl-1-chloropropane, or 2-methyl-2-chloropropane) and butyl ethyl ether have been measured at seven temperatures from T = 283.15 to 313.15 K From these data refractive index deviations were calculated and correlated with a Redlich-Kister polynomial expansion. The refractive index deviations were found positive. Finally, from these refractive indices both densities and surface tensions of the studied systems were predicted and compared with previously reported values

    Identificación de áreas desertificadas y preservadas en una unidad de conservación en el Estado de Paraíba - Brasil

    The objective of this study is to identify and analyse the main characteristics of areas potentially degraded by desertification and of preserved areas using the Soil Surface Moisture Index (SSMI), alongside the Land Surface Temperature (LST) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The study is based on a set of points obtained in the field and from the RGB false colour image for the Environmental Protection Areas (EPA) of the Cariri, in the semi-arid region of Paraíba, using a space-time cross-section covering both rainy and dry periods. The results showed that at all points in Desertified Areas, the main characteristics were a low SSMI, high LST and low NDVI in both periods. The Preserved Areas, on the other hand, presented a high SSMI, moderate LST and high NDVI in the rainy period, with the same characteristics repeated in the dry period for SSMI and NDVI, but with a low LST. Timely identification of these characteristics, both in areas degraded by desertification and in better preserved areas, can provide useful information for future decisions relating to the physical and territorial management of the Conservation Unit.El objetivo de este estudio fue identificar y analizar las principales características de áreas potencialmente degradadas por desertificación y de áreas preservadas. Para ello se utilizaron el Índice de Humedad Superficial del Suelo (IHSS), junto con la Temperatura de la Superficie de la Tierra (TS) y el Índice de Vegetación de Diferencia Normalizada (IVDN). El estudio está basado en un conjunto de puntos obtenidos en el campo y en la composición de la imagen de falso color RGB para el Área de Protección Ambiental (APA) del Carirí, en la región semiárida de Paraíba, utilizando un corte espacio-temporal que abarca la estación lluviosa y seca. Los resultados mostraron que en todos los puntos de las Áreas Desertificadas las principales características fueron el IHSS bajo, TS alto y IVDN bajo en ambos períodos. Las Áreas Preservadas, por su parte, presentaron IHSS alto, TS moderado e IVDN alto en la época de lluvias, con las mismas características repetidas en el periodo seco para IHSS y IVDN, pero con TS bajo. La identificación puntual de estas características, tanto en áreas degradadas por desertificación como en las más conservadas, puede aportar información útil para la toma de decisiones futuras relacionadas con la gestión territorial y física de la Unidad de Conservación

    Copper-containing amine oxidases contribute to terminal polyamine oxidation in peroxisomes and apoplast of Arabidopsis thaliana

    Polyamines (PAs) are oxidatively deaminated at their primary or secondary amino-groups by copper-containing amine oxidases (CuAOs) or FAD-dependent amine oxidases (PAOs), respectively. Both enzymes have long been considered to be apoplastic proteins. However, three out of five PAO isoforms in Arabidopsis thaliana are localized in peroxisomes, while the other two PAOs are predicted to be cytosolic. Interestingly, most of these PAOs do not contribute to terminal PA oxidation, but instead are involved in the back-conversion pathway, producing spermidine from spermine and putrescine from spermidine, which in turn is inhibited by putrescine. This opens the question as to whether PAs are catabolized in the apoplast of Arabidopsis and if the terminal oxidation occurs in the peroxisomes. The main objective of this study was to know if these catabolic processes are mediated by CuAOs. Results A. thaliana contains ten genes annotated as CuAOs, but only one (ATAO1) has been characterized at the protein level. Reported herein is the characterization of three genes encoding putative Arabidopsis CuAOs (AtCuAO1, AtCuAO2 and AtCuAO3). These genes encode functional CuAOs that use putrescine and spermidine as substrates. AtCuAO1, like ATAO1, is an extracellular protein, while AtCuAO2 and AtCuAO3 are localized in peroxisomes. The three genes present a different expression profile in response to exogenous treatments, such as application of abcisic acid, methyl jasmonate, salycilic acid, flagellin 22 and wounding. Conclusions PA catabolism in the Arabidopsis apoplast is mediated predominantly by CuAOs, while in peroxisomes the co-localization of CuAO-dependent terminal catabolism with PAO-back-conversion machineries might contribute to modulating putrescine-mediated inhibition of the back-conversion, suggesting the occurrence of a tight coordination between both catabolic pathways. The expression profile of AtCuAO1-3 in response to different exogenous treatments, together with the different localization of the corresponding proteins, provides evidence for the functional diversification of Arabidopsis CuAO proteins

    Polarization conversion spectroscopy of hybrid modes

    Enhanced polarization conversion in reflection for the Otto and Kretschmann configurations is introduced as a new method for hybrid-mode spectroscopy. Polarization conversion in reflection appears when hybrid-modes are excited in a guiding structure composed of at least one anisotropic media. In contrast to a dark dip, in this case modes are associated to a peak in the converted reflectance spectrum, increasing the detection sensitivity and avoiding confusion with reflection dips associated with other processes as can be transmission.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    The Socio-Environmental Survey: a tool for an integrated study of protected areas. The case of Sierra Sur de Sevilla and Sierra de Cádiz

    La declaración de Espacios Naturales Protegidos ha producido con frecuencia conflictos con las poblaciones locales en la gestión de la conservación de la naturaleza. En respuesta a esta realidad han surgido nuevos métodos y estrategias que buscan una mejor integración de la componente social en las áreas protegidas. Este artículo presenta los resultados de una Encuesta Socio-Ambiental (ESA) realizada durante la elaboración de una propuesta de Espacio Natural Protegido para la Red de Espacios Naturales Protegidos de Andalucía en la campiña agrícola del Subbético, entre las provincias de Sevilla y Cádiz (sur de España). A partir de los datos obtenidos se propone y discute la aplicación de la figura de Paisaje Protegido (tipo Categoría V de UICN) asociada a un modelo de gestión participativa abierta.The declaration of Protected Areas has frequently led to conflicts with local populations because of nature conservation management. In response to this reality new methods and strategies are emerging that are looking for a better integration of the social component in Protected Areas. This article shows the results of a Socio-Environmental Survey (SES) conducted during the elaboration of a Protected Area proposal for the Andalusian Protected Areas Network in the Subbetic agricultural “campiña”, between Seville and Cádiz provinces (Southern Spain). Based on the data obtained, the application of the Protected Landscape figure (type Category V of IUCN) associated to an open participatory management model is proposed and discussed

The definitive version was published in Journal of General Physiology 130 (2007): 41-54, doi:10.1085/jgp.200709770.Palytoxin binds to Na+/K+ pumps in the plasma membrane of animal cells and opens an electrodiffusive cation pathway through the pumps. We investigated properties of the palytoxin-opened channels by recording macroscopic and microscopic currents in cell bodies of neurons from the giant fiber lobe, and by simultaneously measuring net current and 22Na+ efflux in voltage-clamped, internally dialyzed giant axons of the squid Loligo pealei. The conductance of single palytoxin-bound "pump-channels" in outside-out patches was ~7 pS in symmetrical 500 mM [Na+], comparable to findings in other cells. In these high-[Na+], K+-free solutions, with 5 mM cytoplasmic [ATP], the K0.5 for palytoxin action was ~70 pM. The pump-channels were ~40–50 times less permeable to N-methyl-D-glucamine (NMG+) than to Na+. The reversal potential of palytoxin-elicited current under biionic conditions, with the same concentration of a different permeant cation on each side of the membrane, was independent of the concentration of those ions over the range 55–550 mM. In giant axons, the Ussing flux ratio exponent (n') for Na+ movements through palytoxin-bound pump-channels, over a 100–400 mM range of external [Na+] and 0 to –40 mV range of membrane potentials, averaged 1.05 ± 0.02 (n = 28). These findings are consistent with occupancy of palytoxin-bound Na+/K+ pump-channels either by a single Na+ ion or by two Na+ ions as might be anticipated from other work; idiosyncratic constraints are needed if the two Na+ ions occupy a single-file pore, but not if they occupy side-by-side binding sites, as observed in related structures, and if only one of the sites is readily accessible from both sides of the membrane.This work was supported by NIH grants NS22979, NS11223, and HL36783, and National Science Foundation grant CCF- 0622158.
