Spatial Autocorrelation Models for Galton's Problem

The effects of Galton's problem are discussed within a framework provided by the linear regression model. We examine five illustrative diffusion models and evaluate alternative estimation procedures (es pecially Naroll's linked pairs test and Wirsing's second order partial correlation). While no one procedure is adequate for all models, the specification of a diffusion model provides guidance in the selection of an appropriate estimation procedure.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/68209/2/10.1177_106939718101600106.pd

CEO pay, shareholder returns, and accounting profits

We assess the impact on CEO pay (including salary, cash bonus, and benefits in kind) of changes in both accounting and shareholder returns in 99 British companies in the years 1972-89. After correcting for heterogeneity biases inherent in the standard specifications of the problem, we find a strong positive relationship between CEO pay and within-company changes in shareholder returns, and no statistically significant relationship between CEO pay and within-company changes in accounting returns. Differences between firms in long-term average profitability do appear to have a substantial effect on CEO pay, while differences between firms in shareholder returns add nothing to the within-firm pay dynamics. These findings call into question the rationale for explicitly share-based incentive schemes

Cosmological phase transitions in warped space: gravitational waves and collider signatures

    Get PDF
We study the electroweak phase transition within a 5D warped model including a scalar potential with an exponential behavior, and strong back-reaction over the metric, in the infrared. By means of a novel treatment of the superpotential formalism, we explore parameter regions that were previously inaccessible. We nd that for large enough values of the t'Hooft parameter (e.g. N = 25) the holographic phase transition occurs, and it can force the Higgs to undergo a rst order electroweak phase transition, suitable for electroweak baryogenesis. The model exhibits gravitational waves and colliders signatures. It typically predicts a stochastic gravitational wave background observable both at the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna and at the Einstein Telescope. Moreover the radion tends to be heavy enough such that it evades current constraints, but may show up in future LHC runs. The work of EM is supported by the Spanish MINEICO under Grant FPA2015-64041-C2-1-P and FIS2017-85053-C2-1-P, by the Junta de Andaluc a under Grant FQM-225, by the Basque Government under Grant IT979-16, and by the Spanish Consolider Ingenio 2010 Programme CPAN (CSD2007-00042). As a social scientist with no training in genetics, I am grateful for the opportunity to discuss the resolution of IQ inheritance at this conference. I am filled not only with gratitude but also with trepidation. For Morton & Rao (1977
