    Contested knowledge in Dutch climate change policy

    In dealing with wicked problems, policymakers increasingly are confronted with three competing ‘knowledge claims’: the notion of evidence-based policy, alternative ‘commons knowledge’ created by citizens, and ‘fact-free’ politics. Consequently, the knowledge base for dealing with wicked problems is becoming increasingly contested. This paper analyses the ways in which these three competing knowledge claims interact, and the consequences of their interaction, through a case study of the dynamics of knowledge claims in Dutch climate policy. The paper concludes that the quest for evidence-based policy may constitute an impediment to progress in finding common ground in practical policies

    Asymptotics and local constancy of characters of p-adic groups

    In this paper we study quantitative aspects of trace characters Θπ\Theta_\pi of reductive pp-adic groups when the representation π\pi varies. Our approach is based on the local constancy of characters and we survey some other related results. We formulate a conjecture on the behavior of Θπ\Theta_\pi relative to the formal degree of π\pi, which we are able to prove in the case where π\pi is a tame supercuspidal.     Realising the Olympic dream: vision, support and challenge

    The sporting arena is replete with examples and anecdotes of great inspirational coaches that have led teams to success, often in the face of adversity and against seemingly better opponents. The role of the coach in developing and motivating athletes has also been the focus of much research in sport psychology (e.g., Challaduria 1990; Smith & Smoll, 2007). Despite the ease with which one readily accepts that coaches can be inspirational, the sport coaching literature is somewhat devoid of research on inspirational coaches and the effects of such coaches on athletic success. The purpose of the current paper is to theoretically delineate the inspirational effects of coaches in sport. Given the relative paucity of inspiration-related research in sport we draw upon contemporary theories of leadership from organisational and military psychology (e.g., transformational and charismatic leadership theories). We propose a sport-specific model of leadership that centres around the vision, support, and challenge meta-cognitive model developed by Arthur and Hardy in military contexts. The model posits that �great� coaches inspire their athletes by: (a) creating an inspirational vision of the future; (b) providing the necessary support to achieve the vision; and (c) providing the challenge to achieve the vision. The underlying proposition is that the vision provides meaning and direction for followers� effort. That is, the vision serves as the beacon around which all the sweat, pain and sacrifice involved in achieving success at the highest level in sport is directed. At the heart of this model is the notion that athletes can achieve their dreams provided they are inspired to do so; this is because all other things being equal the person who is motivated to practice longer and train harder will ultimately be the best.     Differential Therapeutic Outcomes of Community-Based Group Interventions for Women and Children Exposed to Intimate Partner Violence

    Two community-based group therapies, emotion focused versus goal oriented, are compared among women exposed to intimate partner violence (n = 46) and their children ( n = 48) aged between 6 and 12 years. A series of repeated measures analyses are employed to evaluate the effects of time from baseline to postintervention following random assignment.     Lack of evidence for a causal role of CALR3 in monogenic cardiomyopathy

    The pathogenicity of previously published disease-associated genes and variants is sometimes questionable. Large-scale, population-based sequencing studies have uncovered numerous false assignments of pathogenicity. Misinterpretation of sequence variants may have serious implications for the patients and families involved, as genetic test results are increasingly being used in medical decision making. In this study, we assessed the role of the calreticulin-3 gene (CALR3) in cardiomyopathy. CALR3 has been included in several cardiomyopathy gene panels worldwide. Its inclusion is based on a single publication describing two missense variants in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. In our national cardiomyopathy cohort (n = 6154), we identified 17 unique, rare heterozygous CALR3 variants in 48 probands. Overall, our patient cohort contained a significantly higher number of rare CALR3 variants compared to the ExAC population (p = 0.0036). However, after removing a potential Dutch founder variant, no statistically significant difference was found (p = 0.89). In nine probands, the CALR3 variant was accompanied by a disease-causing variant in another, well-known cardiomyopathy gene. In three families, the CALR3 variant did not segregate with the disease. Furthermore, we could not demonstrate calreticulin-3 protein expression in myocardial tissues at various ages. On the basis of these findings, it seems highly questionable that variants in CALR3 are a monogenic cause of cardiomyopathy

    Preventive neuroradiology is a new concept supported by growing literature. The main rationale of preventive neuroradiology is the application of multimodal brain imaging toward early and subclinical detection of brain disease and subsequent preventive actions through identification of modifiable risk factors. An insightful example of this is in the area of age-related cognitive decline, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia with potentially modifiable risk factors such as obesity, diet, sleep, hypertension, diabetes, depression, supplementation, smoking, and physical activity. In studying this link between lifestyle and cognitive decline, brain imaging markers may be instrumental as quantitative measures or even indicators of early disease. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the major studies reflecting how lifestyle factors affect the brain and cognition aging.     The Efficacy of Coil Embolization to Obtain Intrahepatic Redistribution in Radioembolization: Qualitative and Quantitative Analyses

    Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of coil embolization to obtain intrahepatic redistribution in patients undergoing radioembolization. Materials and Method: All patients treated with radioembolization at our institute were retrospectively analyzed, and all cases in which a tumor-feeding vessel was coil-embolized were selected. Two nuclear medicine physicians visually assessed the effect of redistribution. Furthermore, the redistribution of microspheres was measured by quantifying the activity distributed to the coil-embolized (dependent) segment relative to the other (non-dependent) segments and to the tumor(s) in that segment. Quantitative analysis was performed on post-treatment 90Y-PET and 166Ho-SPECT using Simplicit90Y software. Lesion response was measured according to RECIST 1.1 criteria at 3 months post-treatment. Results: Out of 37 cases, 32 were suitable for quantitative analysis and 37 for qualitative analysis. In the qualitative analysis, redistribution was deemed successful in 69% of cases. The quantitative analysis showed that the median ratio of the activity to the dependent embolized segments and the non-dependent segments was 0.88 (range 0.26–2.05) and 0.80 (range 0.19–1.62) for tumors in dependent segments compared with tumors in non-dependent segments. Using a cutoff ratio of 0.7 (30% lower activity concentration in comparison with the rest of the liver), 57% of cases were successful. At 3 months post-treatment, 6% of dependent tumors had partial response, 20% progressive disease, and 74% stable disease. In non-dependent tumors, this was, respectively, 16%, 20%, and 64%. Conclusion: Coil embolization of hepatic arteries to induce redistribution of microspheres has a limited success rate. Qualitative assessment tends to overrate redistribution

    Intraspecific variability in heat resistance of fungal conidia

    Microbial species are inherently variable, which is reflected in intraspecies genotypic and phenotypic differences. Strain-to-strain variation gives rise to variability in stress resistance and plays a crucial role in food safety and food quality. Here, strain variability in heat resistance of asexual spores (conidia) of the fungal species Aspergillus niger, Penicillium roqueforti and Paecilomyces variotii was quantified and compared to bacterial variability found in the literature. After heat treatment, a 5.4- to 8.6-fold difference in inactivation rate was found between individual strains within each species, while the strain variability of the three fungal species was not statistically different. We evaluated whether the degree of intraspecies variability is uniform, not only within the fungal kingdom, but also amongst different bacterial species. Comparison with three spore-forming bacteria and two non-spore-forming bacteria revealed that the variability of the different species was indeed in the same order of magnitude, which hints to a microbial signature of variation that exceeds kingdom boundaries.Microbial Biotechnolog

    A complex systems approach to constructing better models for managing financial markets and the economy

    We outline a vision for an ambitious program to understand the economy and financial markets as a complex evolving system of coupled networks of interacting agents. This is a completely different vision from that currently used in most economic models. This view implies new challenges and opportunities for policy and managing economic crises. The dynamics of such models inherently involve sudden and sometimes dramatic changes of state. Further, the tools and approaches we use emphasize the analysis of crises rather than of calm periods.
