Stormwater Discussion Session - Recommendations
The Stormwater panel addressed water quality impacts on the Wakulla springshed stemming from stormwater discharge into the basin; correlation of discharge with precipitation; relationship between land use and the quantity and quality of runoff and use of Florida's stormwater program and BMP's to address these impacts; nutrient loading; local efforts to reduce stormwater pollution; and, the role of phosphorus vs. nitrate concentrations as triggers to eutrophication and Hydrilla and algal growth. The panel evaluated current stormwater runoff management practices and discussed field-tested and new and innovative practices that offer more environmentally sound and/or cost effective alternatives to stormwater management in karst. 1 slid

Simulations of Neocortical Columnar Oscillations
The intentionof this thesis is to examine the role of the neocortical local drcuit in supporting synchronisatLon and fast (gamma) oscUlation. The aim is to include stereotypical features of the local neocortex in model simulations of cortical activity. Modelling is hmitedby scale in number and detail. Model features include three neurontypes(RS, FS and IB) andsynapses with three time courses takenfrom reportedtri-phasic PSPs (fEPSP, flPSP andsIPSP). Cell types and synapses are distributedin a two layer model. The contribution of the layers to columnactivity is investigated. The upperlayer has a tendancy towardspredse synchronisation and can dominate the activity producing synchronisation and oscillation in the whole column. This is attributed to the stronger inhibitory circuit in the upperlayer. The lower layer achieves a less precise synchronisatiorv this is attributed to a lower level of inhibition and the intraburst duration of IB neurons. The significance of this difference in the temporal properties of the two layers is discussed in relation to existing theories andmodels of local cortical function. Following a further consideration of local cortical physiology a new model of cortical functioning is proposed. The key features of this model include: the generation of local oscillations in a vertical interlarninar reciprocal circuit; the apical dendrite providing a sharp coincidence detection functionbetweenthe layers; slow axonal lateral propagationprovidinga time delay network; apical dendrites of bursting cells (CH and IB) providing coincidence detectionbetweenmputs 6:0m distant areas (layer 1 inputs) and local activity; bursting cell innervationof intemeurons, linking the local oscillation cy de to coinddence detection. This moddis termed an'intrinsically osdllating time coding networld (lOTCN). Specific predictions are made concerning the functiorungof the local circuit m neocortex, and the connectivity of CH neurons
International students’ university to work transition: research-in-brief
International students are increasingly seeking to attend Canadian educational institutions and the Canadian government has signaled its intention to make international students an important part of immigration policy. Yet, international students often face barriers when integrating into the workforce and many decide to return to their country of origin.
In this paper we detailed the preliminary findings from the doctoral thesis underway by the first author, including the results from interviews with seven international students who graduated more than two years but less than nine years ago. We used Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (Smith, Flowers, & Larkin, 2009) and Systems Theory Framework (Patton & McMahon, 2014) to conceptualize the study of how former international students transition to the workforce. The findings from this study offered insights into the influences that were important as they navigated immigration issues related to their transition to the workforce
Correlates of immigrant workers’ job satisfaction
Research in the career
development field has primarily
focused on the barriers immigrant
workers face when integrating
into the workforce and how they
can overcome these barriers.
There have been few studies investigating contextual factors that
impede workplace integration. To
address this gap, the current study
surveyed employed immigrant
workers across Canada about
their job satisfaction, in relation
to their bicultural competence,
English language usage, social
support, and workplace attitudes.
A correlational analysis revealed
significant correlations between
bicultural competence, English
language usage, social support,
workplace attitudes and immigrant worker job satisfaction. Results from this study highlighted
the importance of considering
contextual influences such as
workplace attitudes in developing
research and practices to support
the successful employment integration of immigrant workers
Naval History by Conspiracy Theory: The British Admiralty before the First World War and the Methodology of Revisionism
Revisionist interpretations of British naval policy in the Fisher era claim that an elaborate smoke screen was created to hide the Royal Navy’s real policies; while documents showing the true goals were systematically destroyed. By asserting this, revisionists are able to dismiss those parts of the documentary record that contradict their theories, while simultaneously excusing the lack of evidence for their theories by claiming it has been destroyed. This article shows that this methodology is misleading and untenable

Latinos and Social Welfare
Social welfare is the minimum standard of living for a citizen in the United States. Latinos are the fastest-growing population in the U.S. and government safety nets, like social welfare, are in place so that in tough economic times, citizens do not fall into poverty. The Latino-American population receives higher rates of welfare benefits; however, there is a much larger underlying problem as to why a significant portion of this community needs such benefits
Professional Values and Practice
The professional code of the General Teaching Council lists eight new standards, each of them analysed here in detail using questions and activities to describe what trainee teachers need to know, understand and demonstrate as they work towards Qualified Teacher Status. Each of the eight standards cover the following issues: expectations, diversity and achievement personal and professional values values in the classroom values, rights and responsibilities in the wider community the community of the school professional relationships personal and professional development professional responsibility. This practical and jargon-free guide features an extensive range of examples and suggestions for further reading, designed to help those in their early professional development
