Trauma, congenital abnormalities or cancer-induced bone defects can be treated with tissue engineering products. Graphene oxide-containing polymeric scaffolds are used as an artificial extracellular matrix, acting as an environment where cells can grow and turn into living tissues. In the presented study, primarily cytotoxicity of graphene oxide was determined depending on the concentration. According to the cytotoxicity results, two different scaffolds containing low and high concentrations of GO were prepared and usability in bone tissue engineering was examined. For this purpose, water uptake, in vitro degradation and mechanical properties of the scaffolds were determined. On the predetermined days, MC3T3 cells proliferation and ACTB, COL1A1, OCN, OPN, RUNX2 gene expression were determined. According to the results, MC3T3 cell proliferation was increased when the incubation time increased, and also, gene expression related to bone tissue formation was increased. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature

WOS: 000316804600012PubMed ID: 23665713Hydatid disease is a zoonotic infection resulting from the tissue infestation of the larval stage of the parasite Echinococcus granulosus. Hydatid cysts superinfected with pyogenic organisms have been reported previously. Brucellosis is more prevalent in people with close contact to animals and those consuming fresh milk or fresh milk products. Although these two disorders have some similar epidemiological features, we did not encounter any hydatid cyst cases superinfected with Brucella species (sp.) in a search of medical literature (Pubmed). Here, we present a case of hydatid cyst disease superinfected with Brucella and review the literature on other hydatid cyst cases superinfected with pyogenic organisms. We conclude that in regions where brucellosis and hydatid cysts are endemic, cysts may be infected with Brucella sp

LATE CRETACEOUS ARC AND BACK-ARC FORMATION WITHIN THE SOUTHERN NEOTETHYS: WHOLE-ROCK, TRACE ELEMENT AND Sr-Nd-Pb ISOTOPIC DATA FROM BASALTIC ROCKS OF THE YUKSEKOVA COMPLEX (MALATYA- ELAZIG, SE TURKEY)

    No full text
The remnants of the Southern Neotethys are represented by ophiolitic bodies and subduction/accretion complexes along the Southeast Anatolian-Zagros suture belt in the Eastern Mediterranean. Around Malatya and Elazig areas (SE Turkey), they are found within imbricated slices of a melange complex, known as the Yuksekova Complex. The studied basaltic rocks are common members of this melange complex, and show distinctive features of sources with tholeiitic to tholeiitic-transitional character. Petrography, whole-rock trace element and isotopic data reveal two different compositional groups. Group I is transitional between island arc tholeiites and normal mid-ocean ridge basalt, and Group II includes back-arc (BABB), enriched mid-ocean ridge (E-MORB), and ocean island basalt type (OIB) compositions. According to the known Late Cretaceous stratigraphic ages, the studied basaltic rocks have (Sr-87/Sr-86)(i) = 0.7036660-0.706394, (Nd-143/Nd-144), = 0.512734-0.512927, Pb-208/Pb-204 = 38.3216-39.3400, Pb-207/Pb-204 = 15.5018-15.6262 and Pb-206/Pb-204 = 18.5655-19.3209. In addition, epsilon Nd-i values vary between +3.99 and +8.01 with two-stage T-DM values ranging from 0.25 to 0.59 Ga. In the Sr versus Nd isotope correlation diagram, most samples plot along the mantle array line. In the correlation diagrams of Pb-206/Pb-204 versus Pb-208/Pb-206 and Pb-207/Pb-206, the rock samples also plot nearly on the Northern Hemisphere Reference Line, similar to Atlantic and Pacific Ocean ridge basalts. As a whole, the isotopic data reveal that the studied rocks were derived from a depleted mantle source

Upper Cretaceous Radiolarian ages from an arc-back-arc within the Yuksekova Complex in the southern Neotethys melange, SE Turkey

    No full text
The Yuksekova complex in SE Turkey is a part of a continuous belt of ophiolites and subduction-accretion complexes that stretches from Troodos in the west to Oman in the east, representing the remnants of the Southern Branch of Neotethys. This complex mainly comprises a tectonically chaotic assemblage of basaltic dykes and pillow lavas associated with radiolarian cherts, shales and pelagic limestones. Detailed petrological work on submarine basaltic lavas from Elazig-Malatya area in SE Turkey revealed the presence of two distinct tectonomagmatic groups displaying island arc and back-arc characteristics. Radiolarian assemblages are described for the first time from radiolarian cherts in primary depositional contact with the basaltic rocks in this belt. Two distinct assemblages are recognized as Upper Cenomanian to Lower Turonian and Lower Coniacian to Lower Maastrichtian based on the characteristic radiolarian taxa. The new fossil data supports the suggestions that the southern branch of Neotethys has closed by intra-oceanic subduction where the arc and back-arc type oceanic crust generation was involved not earlier than Upper Cretaceous. Cervical Spinolaminoplasty With Newly Designed Titanium Mini-Plates

    No full text
One of the complication of cervical laminoplasty is the restenosis of the opened laminae. Weakness of the screws placed on laminae may cause restenosis. Here, we describe a new technic 'spinolaminoplasty (Turkish Open-door laminoplasty)' with newly designed titanium mini plate that placed one side to lateral mass, and the other on spinous process to keep the laminae opened. Two different fixation materials were used for axial compression tests. One was Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene block with cervical vertebrae geometry and fresh ovine cervical vertebrae. In the first group, mini plates were fixed on laminae as in the conventional method described by Hirabayashi. In the second group, mini plates were fixed on spinous process to perform spinolaminoplasty with single and double screws. New fixation method with double screw provides 26% higher stiffness than the closest group, namely new fixation on polyethylene block. And new fixationmethod with double screw was exhibited significantly higher (P < 0.005) performance between the Ovine groups. As in the spinolaminoplasty technic fixing the mini plates to spinous process with longer screws instead of laminae, strengthens the system compared to the conventional method. This proves that rigidity of new construction model is more stable than the conventional method. Tight fixed laminae may prevent restenosis. Also applying the screw through spinous process instead of laminae may prevent the possible cord injuries. This work was supported by the Research Fund of TUBITAK, Project # 111M583, and Osimplant medical devices.
