Double photoionization of propylene oxide: a coincidence study of the ejection of a pair of valence-shell electrons
Propylene oxide, a favorite target of experimental and theoretical studies of circular dichroism, was recently discovered in interstellar space, further amplifying the attention to its role in the current debate on protobiological homochirality. In the present work, a photoelectron-photoion-photoion coincidence technique, using an ion-imaging detector and tunable synchrotron radiation in the 18.0-37.0 eV energy range, permits us (i) to observe six double ionization fragmentation channels, their relative yields being accounted for about two-thirds by the couple (C2H4+, CH2O+) and one-fifth by (C2H3+, CH3O+); (ii) to measure thresholds for their openings as a function of photon energy; and (iii) to unravel a pronounced bimodality for a kinetic-energy-released distribution, fingerprint of competitive non-adiabatic mechanisms
Ionization and Fragmentation of a Global Warming Gas by EUV and X-Ray Photons
An experimental investigation of the processes leading tothe fragmentation of the singly ionized 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (HFC-134a, CH2FCF3) by EUV and soft X-rays is presented. HFC-134ais taken into consideration as the most convenient replacement for CFC-12 in refrigeration applications due to the fact that it has null ozone depletion factor. Dissociation of the singly ionized HFC-134amolecule was induced by valence, direct and indirect C 1s core photoionization or photoexcitation and the ionic fragments were detected in coincidence (PEPICO mode) with the ejected electrons without energy analysis. The singly ionized parent ion CF4CH2+can be detected even at photon energies above the C 1s threshold
Quantum angular momentum, projective geometry and the networks of seven and ten spins: Fano, Desargues and alternative incidence configurations
The basic ingredients of the quantum theory of orbital and spin angular momentum (vector coefficients,
3nj symbols) encounter continuing relevance in wide areas beyond the traditional ones (molecular,
atomic and nuclear spectroscopies and dynamics). This paper offers insight on the connection at the most
elementary of levels with the diagrammatic approaches to projective geometry. In particular here we
exhibit how the Fano, Desargues and related incidence configurations emerge in the Racah and in the
Biedenharn-Elliott identities, corresponding respectively to the hexagonal and pentagonal relationships
that provide the basis for the construction of 3nj symbols and of spin networks. It is shown that the treatment,
although mostly confined to the quadrangulation of the real projective plane, permits however the
introduction of networks involving seven and ten spins, and preludes to developments towards computational
and asymptotic approaches for quantum and semi-classical applications to spectroscopy and
dynamics
Photoabsorption and Photoionization Cross Sections of Pyridine in the Vacuum-Ultraviolet Energy Range
We have performed an experimental investigation into the interaction of vacuum-ultraviolet synchrotron radiation with pyridine molecules in the gas phase. Specifically, a double-ion chamber spectrometer was used to measure the absolute photoabsorption cross sections and the photoionization quantum yields from the ionization threshold to 21.5 eV. Moreover, photoionization and neutral-decay cross sections in absolute scale were derived from these data. In addition, the fragmentation pattern was investigated as a function of the photon energy by using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer and the photoelectron-photoion coincidence technique. Thus, the absolute partial ionization cross sections for each ionic fragment were obtained. Comparisons are made with experimental data available in the literature
International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortiu (INICC) report, data summary of 43 countries for 2007-2012. Device-associated module
We report the results of an International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortium (INICC) surveillance study from January 2007-December 2012 in 503 intensive care units (ICUs) in Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Europe. During the 6-year study using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) U.S. National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) definitions for device-associated health care–associated infection (DA-HAI), we collected prospective data from 605,310 patients hospitalized in the INICC's ICUs for an aggregate of 3,338,396 days. Although device utilization in the INICC's ICUs was similar to that reported from ICUs in the U.S. in the CDC's NHSN, rates of device-associated nosocomial infection were higher in the ICUs of the INICC hospitals: the pooled rate of central line–associated bloodstream infection in the INICC's ICUs, 4.9 per 1,000 central line days, is nearly 5-fold higher than the 0.9 per 1,000 central line days reported from comparable U.S. ICUs. The overall rate of ventilator-associated pneumonia was also higher (16.8 vs 1.1 per 1,000 ventilator days) as was the rate of catheter-associated urinary tract infection (5.5 vs 1.3 per 1,000 catheter days). Frequencies of resistance of Pseudomonas isolates to amikacin (42.8% vs 10%) and imipenem (42.4% vs 26.1%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates to ceftazidime (71.2% vs 28.8%) and imipenem (19.6% vs 12.8%) were also higher in the INICC's ICUs compared with the ICUs of the CDC's NHSN
