Application of an atomic oxygen beam facility to the investigation of shuttle glow chemistry
A facility for the investigation of the interactions of energetic atomic oxygen with solids is described. The facility is comprised of a four chambered, differentially pumped molecular beam apparatus which can be equipped with one of a variety of sources of atomic oxygen. The primary source is a dc arc heated supersonic nozzle source which produces a flux of atomic oxygen in excess of 10 to the 15th power sq cm/sec at the target, at a velocity of 3.5 km/sec. Results of applications of this facility to the study of the reactions of atomic oxygen with carbon and polyimide films are briefly reviewed and compared to data obtained on various flights of the space shuttle. A brief discussion of possible application of this facility to investigation of chemical reactions which might contribute to atmosphere induced vehicle glow is presented
A transport coefficient: the electrical conductivity
I describe the lattice determination of the electrical conductivity of the
quark gluon plasma. Since this is the first extraction of a transport
coefficient with a degree of control over errors, I next use this to make
estimates of other transport related quantities using simple kinetic theory
formulae. The resulting estimates are applied to fluctuations, ultra-soft
photon spectra and the viscosity. Dimming of ultra-soft photons is exponential
in the mean free path, and hence is a very sensitive probe of transport.Comment: Talk given in ICPAQGP 2005, SINP, Kolkat
Atmospheric observations for STS-1 landing
A summary of synoptic weather conditions existing over the western United States is given for the time of shuttle descent into Edwards Air Force Base, California. The techniques and methods used to furnish synoptic atmospheric data at the surface and aloft for flight verification of the STS-1 orbiter during its descent into Edwards Air Force Base are specified. Examples of the upper level data set are given

Effective Kinetic Theory for High Temperature Gauge Theories
Quasiparticle dynamics in relativistic plasmas associated with hot,
weakly-coupled gauge theories (such as QCD at asymptotically high temperature
) can be described by an effective kinetic theory, valid on sufficiently
large time and distance scales. The appropriate Boltzmann equations depend on
effective scattering rates for various types of collisions that can occur in
the plasma. The resulting effective kinetic theory may be used to evaluate
observables which are dominantly sensitive to the dynamics of typical
ultrarelativistic excitations. This includes transport coefficients
(viscosities and diffusion constants) and energy loss rates. We show how to
formulate effective Boltzmann equations which will be adequate to compute such
observables to leading order in the running coupling of high-temperature
gauge theories [and all orders in ]. As previously proposed
in the literature, a leading-order treatment requires including both
particle scattering processes as well as effective ``'' collinear
splitting processes in the Boltzmann equations. The latter account for nearly
collinear bremsstrahlung and pair production/annihilation processes which take
place in the presence of fluctuations in the background gauge field. Our
effective kinetic theory is applicable not only to near-equilibrium systems
(relevant for the calculation of transport coefficients), but also to highly
non-equilibrium situations, provided some simple conditions on distribution
functions are satisfied.Comment: 40 pages, new subsection on soft gauge field instabilities adde
Noisy Optimization: Convergence with a Fixed Number of Resamplings
It is known that evolution strategies in continuous domains might not
converge in the presence of noise. It is also known that, under mild
assumptions, and using an increasing number of resamplings, one can mitigate
the effect of additive noise and recover convergence. We show new sufficient
conditions for the convergence of an evolutionary algorithm with constant
number of resamplings; in particular, we get fast rates (log-linear
convergence) provided that the variance decreases around the optimum slightly
faster than in the so-called multiplicative noise model. Keywords: Noisy
optimization, evolutionary algorithm, theory.Comment: EvoStar (2014
Measurement of temperature profiles in hot gases and flames
Computer program was written for calculation of molecular radiative transfer from hot gases. Shape of temperature profile was approximated in terms of simple geometric forms so profile could be characterized in terms of few parameters. Parameters were adjusted in calculations using appropriate radiative-transfer expression until best fit was obtained with observed spectra
High temperature color conductivity at next-to-leading log order
The non-Abelian analog of electrical conductivity at high temperature has
previously been known only at leading logarithmic order: that is, neglecting
effects suppressed only by an inverse logarithm of the gauge coupling. We
calculate the first sub-leading correction. This has immediate application to
improving, to next-to-leading log order, both effective theories of
non-perturbative color dynamics, and calculations of the hot electroweak baryon
number violation rate.Comment: 47 pages, 6+2 figure
Optical pattern formation with a 2-level nonlinearity
We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of spontaneous
pattern formation in the transverse section of a single retro-reflected laser
beam passing through a cloud of cold Rubidium atoms. In contrast to previously
investigated systems, the nonlinearity at work here is that of a 2-level atom,
which realizes the paradigmatic situation considered in many theoretical
studies of optical pattern formation. In particular, we are able to observe the
disappearance of the patterns at high intensity due to the intrinsic saturable
character of 2-level atomic transitions.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Light-cone QCD predictions for elastic ed-scattering in the intermediate energy region
The contributions of helicity-flip matrix elements to the deuteron form
factors are discussed in the light-cone frame. Normalized , ,
and are obtained in a simple QCD-inspired model. We find
that plays an important role in . Our numerical results
are consistent with the data in the intermediate energy region.Comment: 9 pages, REVTeX file, 5 figure
