Electrical conductivity and thermal dilepton rate from quenched lattice QCD
We report on a continuum extrapolation of the vector current correlation
function for light valence quarks in the deconfined phase of quenched QCD. This
is achieved by performing a systematic analysis of the influence of cut-off
effects on light quark meson correlators at using clover
improved Wilson fermions. We discuss resulting constraints on the electrical
conductivity and the thermal dilepton rate in a quark gluon plasma. In addition

Summer Workshop on Near-Earth Resources
The possible large scale use of extraterrestrial resources was addressed, either to construct structures in space or to return to Earth as supplements for terrestrial resources. To that end, various specific recommendations were made by the participants in the summer study on near-Earth resources, held at La Jolla, California, 6 to 13 August, 1977. The Moon and Earth-approaching asteroids were considered. Summaries are included of what is known about their compositions and what needs to be learned, along with recommendations for missions designed to provide the needed data. Tentative schedules for these projects are also offered
Advanced propulsion for LEO-Moon transport. 2: Tether configurations in the LEO-Moon system
This brief work discusses a possible application of a tether as a dynamical element in a low Earth orbit (LEO)-Moon transport system, and is a part of the Cal Space study of that transport system. To be specific, that study concentrated on the downward transport of O2 from the Moon to LEO, where it is stored for use as a rocket propellant, thus reducing Earth liftoff mass requirements by a factor of about 8. Moreover, in order to display clearly the role of advanced technology, only one novel technology was introduced at a single node in the transport system, the rest being 'conventional' rocket transport. Tethers were found useful in several different roles: hanging from platforms in lunar orbits, as supports for elevators, spinning in LEO, or spinning in a tether transport orbit, an elliptical orbit with perigee at approximately 600 km. This last use is considered here. Presented are the usefulness of the tether, nature of the tether system, the apparatus needed to support, deploy, and control it, and a discussion of needed developments
B-52 control configured vehicles: Flight test results
Recently completed B-52 Control Configured Vehicles (CCV) flight testing is summarized, and results are compared to analytical predictions. Results are presented for five CCV system concepts: ride control, maneuver load control, flutter mode control, augmented stability, and fatigue reduction. Test results confirm analytical predictions and show that CCV system concepts achieve performance goals when operated individually or collectively
Development of lightweight fire retardant, low-smoke, high-strength, thermally stable aircraft floor paneling
Fire resistance mechanical property tests were conducted on sandwich configurations composed of resin-fiberglass laminates bonded with adhesives to Nomex honeycomb core. The test results were compared to proposed and current requirements for aircraft floor panel applications to demonstrate that the fire safety of the airplane could be improved without sacrificing mechanical performance of the aircraft floor panels
Integrability of one degree of freedom symplectic maps with polar singularities
In this paper, we treat symplectic difference equations with one degree of
freedom. For such cases, we resolve the relation between that the dynamics on
the two dimensional phase space is reduced to on one dimensional level sets by
a conserved quantity and that the dynamics is integrable, under some
assumptions. The process which we introduce is related to interval exchange

Uranium(III) coordination chemistry and oxidation in a flexible small-cavity macrocycle
U(III) complexes of the conformationally flexible, small-cavity macrocycle trans-calix[2]benzene[2]pyrrolide (L)2–, [U(L)X] (X = O-2,6-tBu2C6H3, N(SiMe3)2), have been synthesized from [U(L)BH4] and structurally characterized. These complexes show binding of the U(III) center in the bis(arene) pocket of the macrocycle, which flexes to accommodate the increase in the steric bulk of X, resulting in long U–X bonds to the ancillary ligands. Oxidation to the cationic U(IV) complex [U(L)X][B(C6F5)4] (X = BH4) results in ligand rearrangement to bind the smaller, harder cation in the bis(pyrrolide) pocket, in a conformation that has not been previously observed for (L)2–, with X located between the two ligand arene rings
Langevin equations with multiplicative noise: resolution of time discretization ambiguities for equilibrium systems
A Langevin equation with multiplicative noise is an equation schematically of
the form dq/dt = -F(q) + e(q) xi, where e(q) xi is Gaussian white noise whose
amplitude e(q) depends on q itself. Such equations are ambiguous, and depend on
the details of one's convention for discretizing time when solving them. I show
that these ambiguities are uniquely resolved if the system has a known
equilibrium distribution exp[-V(q)/T] and if, at some more fundamental level,
the physics of the system is reversible. I also discuss a simple example where
this happens, which is the small frequency limit of Newton's equation d^2q/dt^2
+ e^2(q) dq/dt = - grad V(q) + e^{-1}(q) xi with noise and a q-dependent
damping term. The resolution does not correspond to simply interpreting naive
continuum equations in a standard convention, such as Stratanovich or Ito. [One
application of Langevin equations with multiplicative noise is to certain
