Helicity Parton Distributions from Spin Asymmetries in W-Boson Production at RHIC
We present a next-to-leading order QCD calculation of the cross section and
longitudinal spin asymmetry in single-inclusive charged-lepton production, pp
-> l X, at RHIC, where the lepton is produced in the decay of an electroweak
gauge boson. Our calculation is presented in terms of a multi-purpose
Monte-Carlo integration program that may be readily used to include
experimental spin asymmetry data in a global analysis of helicity parton
densities. We perform a toy global analysis, studying the impact of anticipated
RHIC data on our knowledge about the polarized anti-quark distributions.Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures included. Typos in Figs 2, 6, 8 and scales

Nonequilibrium Approach to Bloch-Peierls-Berry Dynamics
We examine the Bloch-Peierls-Berry dynamics under a classical nonequilibrium
dynamical formulation. In this formulation all coordinates in phase space
formed by the position and crystal momentum space are treated on equal footing.
Explicitly demonstrations of the no (naive) Liouville theorem and of the
validity of Darboux theorem are given. The explicit equilibrium distribution
function is obtained. The similarities and differences to previous approaches
are discussed. Our results confirm the richness of the Bloch-Peierls-Berry
dynamics
Two-particle models for the estimation of the mean and standard deviation of concentrations in coastal waters
In this paper we study the mean and standard deviation of concentrations using random walk models. Two-particle models that takes into account the space correlation of the turbulence are introduced and some properties of the distribution of the particle concentration are studied. In order to reduce the CPU time of the calculation a new estimator based on reverse time diffusion is applied. This estimator has been introduced recently by Milstein, Schoenmakers, and Spokoiny (2004). Some numerical aspects of the implementation are discussed for relative simple test problems and finally a realistic application to predict the spreading of the pollutant in the Dutch coastal zone is described

Analyzing the Intensities of K‑Edge Transitions in X2 Molecules (X = F, Cl, Br) for Use in Ligand K‑Edge X‑ray Absorption Spectroscopy
Ligand K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is regularly used to determine the ligand contribution to metal-ligand bonds. For quantitative studies, the pre-edge transition intensities must be referenced to an intensity standard, and pre-edge intensities obtained from different ligand atoms cannot be compared without standardization due to different cross sections at each absorption edge. In this work, the intensities of the 1s → σ* transitions in F2, Cl2, and Br2 are analyzed for their use as references for ligand K-edge XAS. We show that the intensities of these transitions are equal to the intensities of the 1s → np transitions in the unbound halogens. This finding is supported by a comparison between the normalized experimental intensities for the molecules and the calculated oscillator strengths for the atoms. These results highlight the potential for these molecules to be used as intensity standards in F, Cl, and Br K-edge XAS experiments
Sugarbeet Production Under Reduced Tillage Prospects And Problems
A study was initiated in the fall of 1977 to obtain base line data on the applicability of reduced tillage sugarbeet production in the Red River Valley. Three reduced tillage systems were compared to a conventional system which consisted of fall plow plus secondary tillage. Results indicated warmer early spring soil temperatures, better seedling emergence, lower ground-level wind speed and no significant yield loss under reduced tillage as compared to the conventional system
Mapping the Galactic Halo. V. Sgr dSph Tidal Debris 60 degrees from the Main Body
As part of the Spaghetti Project Survey (SPS) we have detected a
concentration of giant stars well above expectations for a smooth halo model.
The position (l~350, b~50) and distance (~50 kpc) of this concentration match
those of the Northern over-density detected by SDSS (Yanny et al. 2000, Ivezic
et al. 2000). We find additional evidence for structure at ~80 kpc in the same
direction. We present radial velocities for many of these stars, including the
first published results from the 6.5m Magellan telescope. The radial velocities
for stars in these structures are in excellent agreement with models of the
dynamical evolution of the Sgr dwarf tidal debris, whose center is 60 degrees
away. The metallicity of stars in these streams is lower than that of the main
body of the Sgr dwarf, which may indicate a radial metallicity gradient prior

Nova Geminorum 1912 and the Origin of the Idea of Gravitational Lensing
Einstein's early calculations of gravitational lensing, contained in a
scratch notebook and dated to the spring of 1912, are reexamined. A hitherto
unknown letter by Einstein suggests that he entertained the idea of explaining
the phenomenon of new stars by gravitational lensing in the fall of 1915 much
more seriously than was previously assumed. A reexamination of the relevant
calculations by Einstein shows that, indeed, at least some of them most likely
date from early October 1915. But in support of earlier historical
interpretation of Einstein's notes, it is argued that the appearance of Nova
Geminorum 1912 (DN Gem) in March 1912 may, in fact, provide a relevant context
and motivation for Einstein's lensing calculations on the occasion of his first
meeting with Erwin Freundlich during a visit in Berlin in April 1912. We also
comment on the significance of Einstein's consideration of gravitational
lensing in the fall of 1915 for the reconstruction of Einstein's final steps in
his path towards general relativity.Comment: 31 p
