Complementary and Alternative Medicine Use among Norwegian Cancer Survivors: Gender-Specific Prevalence and Associations for Use

Kristoffersen's doctoral thesis, available in Munin at http://hdl.handle.net/10037/5255The associations for CAM use are only occasionally differentiated by gender in populations where both male and female cancer survivors occur. The aim of this study is to describe the prevalence of CAM use in individuals with a previous cancer diagnosis and to investigate gender differences regard to factors associated with use. A total of 12982 men and women filled in a questionnaire with questions about life style and health issues. Eight hundred of those had a previous cancer diagnosis of whom 630 answered three questions concerning CAM use in the last 12 months. A total of 33.8% of all cancer survivors reported CAM use, 39.4% of the women and 27.9% of the men (�<0.01). The relationship between the demographic variables and being a CAM user differed significantly between men and women with regard to age (�=0.03), education (�=0.04), and income (�<0.01). Female CAM users were more likely to have a university degree than the nonusers,while male CAM users were more likely to have a lower income than the nonusers. Versatile compressive microscope for hyperspectral transmission and fluorescence lifetime imaging
Increasing demand for multimodal characterization and imaging of new materials entails the combination of various methods in a single microscopic setup. Hyperspectral imaging of transmission spectra or photoluminescence (PL) decay imaging count among the most used methods. Nevertheless, these methods require very different working conditions and instrumentation. Therefore, combining the methods into a single microscopic system is seldom implemented. Here we demonstrate a novel versatile microscope based on single-pixel imaging, where we use a simple optical configuration to measure the hyperspectral information, as well as fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM). The maps are inherently spatially matched and can be taken with spectral resolution limited by the resolution of the used spectrometer (3 nm) or temporal resolution set by PL decay measurement (120 ps). We verify the system's performance by its comparison to the standard FLIM and non-imaging transmission spectroscopy. Our approach enabled us to switch between a broad field-of-view and micrometer resolution without changing the optical configuration. At the same time, the used design opens the possibility to add a variety of other characterization methods. Freezing cold injuries among soldiers in the Norwegian Armed Forces – A cross sectional study
Introduction: Freezing cold injuries (FCI) are a common risk in extreme cold weather warfare operations. The Norwegian Armed Forces (NAF) have the expertise and capabilities in education and training for warfighting capabilities in the Arctic. Nevertheless, a substantial number of Norwegian soldiers sustain freezing cold injuries annually. The aim of this study was to describe the FCI in the NAF, the associated risk factors and clinical associations.
Methodology: The subjects for the study were soldiers registered with FCI in the Norwegian Armed Forces Health Registry (NAFHR) between January 1st 2004–July1st 2021. The soldiers answered a questionnaire regarding background, activities at the time of injury, description of the FCI, risk factors, medical treatment and any sequelae from their FCI.
Results: FCI in the NAF were most frequently reported among young conscripts (mean20.5 years). Hands and feet are most often injured (90.9%). Only a minority (10.4%) received medical treatment. The majority (72.2%) report sequelae. Extreme weather conditions was the most important risk factor (62.5%).
Conclusions: Most soldiers had the knowledge to avoid FCI, but they were injured anyway. It is concerning that only one in 10 injured soldiers received medical treatment after diagnosed with FCI, increasing the risk of FCI sequelae
Impact of different preanalytical conditions on results of lupus anticoagulant tests
Introduction: The currently recommended preanalytical conditions for lupus anticoagulant (LA) analysis require analyzing samples in fresh or freshly frozen platelet‐poor plasma. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether alternative and less cumbersome preanalytical procedures for LA testing give significantly different results compared to recommended conditions. Materials and Methods: Citrated blood samples were drawn from 29 study participants, 15 with negative and 14 with positive LA results. The samples were processed according to the ISTH guideline for LA testing and compared to several alternative preanalytical conditions. Measurements were performed using the dilute Russell's viper venom time (DRVVT) and silica clotting time (SCT), both screen and confirm, on a STA‐R Evolution analyzer. Stability criteria were based upon biological variation. Results: All DRVVT tests (normalized screen, confirm, and screen/confirm ratio) met the stability criteria for all the preanalytical conditions. The SCT tests (normalized screen, confirm, and screen/confirm ratio) met the stability criteria only when treated according to the ISTH guideline, except for SCT normalized screen/confirm ratio which also met the stability criteria for double‐centrifuged aliquoted plasma stored in room temperature for 24 hours and then analyzed “fresh” or after being frozen. One warfarin‐treated patient was reclassified from positive to negative for DRVVT after the preanalytical modifications, while 2 of 29 participants became falsely positive for 2 of 8 conditions for SCT. Conclusions: The DRVVT assays met the criteria for stability for all preanalytical conditions tested, while the SCT assays should be interpreted with caution if the preanalytical guidelines from ISTH are not followed.publishedVersio
Efficient Monte Carlo simulation reveals significant multiple scattering errors in underwater angular scattering measurements
Multiple scattering can severely affect the accuracy of optical instrumentation. Variance reduction methods have been implemented to improve a Monte Carlo model developed to simulate volume scattering functions measured by LISST-VSF instruments. The implemented methods can result in more than a tenfold increase in efficiency. The simulation is used to analyze multiple scattering errors for a range of Fournier-Forand (FF) phase functions. Our results demonstrate significant errors in the scattering coefficient, backscattering coefficient and phase function, where multiple scattering errors may only be considered negligible (<10%) for scattering coefficients <1 m−1. The errors depend strongly on the scattering coefficient but also increase when phase functions become more forward-peaked.publishedVersio
Reflexology for acute rhinosinusitis – Results from a blinded, early-phase comparative trial
Background - Reflexology is commonly used as an adjunct to conventional treatment by patients with respiratory tract infections. The effect of reflexology needs to be tested in a full-scale randomized controlled study. Small early-phase trials can give an indication on whether full-size clinical trials are warranted. The objective of this study is to determine whether the study design is feasible in a full-scale study of reflexology as an add-on to usual care compared to usual care alone in acute rhinosinusitis, and further if there is a statistical indication of an effect of reflexology warranting a full-scale study.
Methods - 20 patients with symptoms compatible with acute rhinosinusitis, and an illness duration of 28 days or less were randomized to additional reflexology treatment along with usual medical care, or usual care alone. The patients scored how much each of 16 sinus-related symptoms bothered them in the past few days on a six-point scale (zero = no problem to five = severe problem). To determine if there is a statistical indication of an effect of reflexology warranting a full-scale study, the separation test was used.
Results - The methodology was considered feasible and could therefore be applied in a full-scale study of reflexology for acute rhinosinusitis. The mean reduction in symptom score from baseline to day two was 0.95 in the reflexology group and 0.78 in the control group. From baseline to day ten the mean reduction in symptom score was 2.12 in the reflexology group and 1.63 in the control group. A statistical indication of effect in a full-scale study in favor of reflexology was found from baseline to day ten but not from baseline to day two.
Conclusions - The research methodology in this study could be used in a full-scale study of reflexology in acute sinusitis. The results from the separation test indicates an effect warranting a full-scale study of reflexology regarding effects in acute sinusitis ten days after treatment
Measurement and modeling of volume scattering functions for phytoplankton from Norwegian coastal waters
The volume scattering function (VSF) describes the angular distribution of scattered light, and the VSF of phytoplankton is one of the most important inherent optical properties of oceanic water. Despite its importance, relatively few measurements of the VSF have been carried out in aquatic environments, and we present here data and analyses of measured VSFs at 442, 490, and 550 nm for 15 representative phytoplankton species from Norwegian coastal waters. In addition, the analytic scattering phase functions Henyey-Greenstein (HG) and Fournier-Forand, as well as Mie theory, were fitted and compared to the measured VSFs. The measured VSFs for all the species were strongly, but unequally forward peaked with HG-fitted asymmetry factors in the range 0.897–0.988. The VSF of Synechococcus sp., Phaeodactylum tricornutum, and Emiliania huxleyi (naked) had shoulders in the forward direction, whereas the VSF of the cylindrically shaped Chaetoceros calcitrans and Chaetoceros wighamii had minima in the backward direction. Results from this work indicate that internal structures influence the angular and spectral shape of the VSF more significantly than the morphology and size of the phytoplankton cells
Microarray-based method for detection of unknown genetic modifications
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Due to the increased use of genetic modifications in crop improvement, there is a need to develop effective methods for the detection of both known and unknown transgene constructs in plants. We have developed a strategy for detection and characterization of unknown genetic modifications and we present a proof of concept for this method using <it>Arabidopsis thaliana </it>and <it>Oryza sativa </it>(rice). The approach relies on direct hybridization of total genomic DNA to high density microarrays designed to have probes tiled throughout a set of reference sequences.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We show that by using arrays with 25 basepair probes covering both strands of a set of 235 vectors (2 million basepairs) we can detect transgene sequences in transformed lines of <it>A. thaliana </it>and rice without prior knowledge about the transformation vectors or the T-DNA constructs used to generate the studied plants.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The approach should allow the user to detect the presence of transgene sequences and get sufficient information for further characterization of unknown genetic constructs in plants. The only requirements are access to a small amount of pure transgene plant material, that the genetic construct in question is above a certain size (here ≥ 140 basepairs) and that parts of the construct shows some degree of sequence similarity with published genetic elements.</p

Free-living parasite life stages may contribute substantially to ecosystem biomass and thus represent a significant source of energy flow when consumed by non-host organisms. However, ambient temperature and the predator's own infection status may modulate consumption rates towards parasite prey.
We investigated the combined effects of temperature and predator infection status on the consumer functional response of three-spined sticklebacks towards the free-living cercariae stages of two common freshwater trematode parasites (Plagiorchis spp., Trichobilharzia franki).
Our results revealed genera-specific functional responses and consumption rates towards each parasite prey: Type II for Plagiorchis spp. and Type III for T. franki, with an overall higher consumption rate on T. franki. Elevated temperature (13°C) increased the consumption rate on Plagiorchis spp. prey for sticklebacks with mild cestode infections (
High consumption of cercarial prey by sticklebacks may impact parasite population dynamics by severely reducing or even functionally eliminating free-living parasite life stages from the environment. This supports the potential role of fish as biocontrol agents for cercariae with similar dispersion strategies, in instances where functional response relationships have been established.
Our study demonstrates how parasite consumption by non-host organisms may be shaped by traits inherent to parasite transmission and dispersal, and emphasises the need to consider free-living parasite life stages as integral energy resources in aquatic food webs.

Characterization of unknown genetic modifications using high throughput sequencing and computational subtraction
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>When generating a genetically modified organism (GMO), the primary goal is to give a target organism one or several novel traits by using biotechnology techniques. A GMO will differ from its parental strain in that its pool of transcripts will be altered. Currently, there are no methods that are reliably able to determine if an organism has been genetically altered if the nature of the modification is unknown.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We show that the concept of computational subtraction can be used to identify transgenic cDNA sequences from genetically modified plants. Our datasets include 454-type sequences from a transgenic line of <it>Arabidopsis thaliana </it>and published EST datasets from commercially relevant species (rice and papaya).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We believe that computational subtraction represents a powerful new strategy for determining if an organism has been genetically modified as well as to define the nature of the modification. Fewer assumptions have to be made compared to methods currently in use and this is an advantage particularly when working with unknown GMOs.</p
