Electroexcitation of the Roper resonance from CLAS data
The helicity amplitudes of the electroexcitation of the Roper resonance on
proton are extracted at 1.7 < Q2 < 4.2 GeV2 from recent high precision
JLab-CLAS cross sections data and longitudinally polarized beam asymmetry for
pi+ electroproduction on protons. The analysis is made using two approaches,
dispersion relations and unitary isobar model, which give consistent results.
It is found that the transverse helicity amplitude for the gamma* p -->
P11(1440) transition, which is large and negative at Q2=0, becomes large and
positive at Q2 ~ 2 GeV2, and then drops slowly with Q2. Longitudinal helicity
amplitude, that was previously found from CLAS data as large and positive at
Q2=0.4,0.65 GeV2, drops with Q2. These results rule out the presentation of
P11(1440) as a 3qG hybrid state, and provide strong evidence in favor of this
resonance as a first radial excitation of the 3q ground state.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, Talk on the Workshop on "The Physics of Excited

Updated resonance photo-decay amplitudes to 2 GeV
We present the results of an energy-dependent and set of single-energy
partial-wave analyses of single-pion photoproduction data. These analyses
extend from threshold to 2 GeV in the laboratory photon energy, and update our
previous analyses to 1.8 GeV. Photo-decay amplitudes are extracted for the
baryon resonances within this energy range. We consider two photoproduction sum
rules and the contributions of two additional resonance candidates found in our
most recent analysis of elastic scattering data. Comparisons are made
with previous analyses.Comment: Revtex, 26 pages, 3 figures. Postscript figures available from

Sum rule for the backward spin polarizability of the nucleon from a backward dispersion relation
A new sum rule for , the backward spin polarizability of the
nucleon, is derived from a backward-angle dispersion relation. Taking into
account single- and multi-pion photoproduction in the s-channel up to the
energy 1.5 GeV and resonances in the t-channel with mass below 1.5 GeV, it is
found for the proton and neutron that = -39.5 +/- 2.4 and
= 52.5 +/- 2.4, respectively, in units of 10^{-4} fm^4.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, revtex. Submitted to Phys. Lett.
Non-linear doublon production in a Mott insulator --- Landau-Dykhne method applied to an integrable model
Doublon-hole pair production which takes place during dielectric breakdown in
a Mott insulator subject to a strong laser or a static electric field is
studied in the one-dimensional Hubbard model. Two nonlinear effects cause the
excitation, i.e., multi-photon absorption and quantum tunneling. Keldysh
crossover between the two mechanisms occurs as the field strength and photon
energy is changed. The calculation is done analytically by the Landau-Dykhne
method in combination with the Bethe ansatz solution and the results are
compared with those of the time dependent density matrix renormalization group.
Using this method, we calculate distribution function of the generated
doublon-hole pairs and show that it drastically changes as we cross the Keldysh
crossover line. After calculating the tunneling threshold for several
representative one-dimensional Mott insulators, possible experimental tests of
the theory is proposed such as angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy of the
upper Hubbard band in the quantum tunneling regime. We also discuss the
relation of the present theory with a many-body extension of electron-positron
pair production in nonlinear quantum electrodynamics known as the Schwinger
mechanism.Comment: 15 page
Quantum beat spectroscopy: stimulated emission probe of hyperfine quantum beats in the atomic Cs 8p level
Measurements of hyperfine polarization quantum beats are used determine the
magnetic dipole (A) and electric quadrupole (B) coupling constants in the
excited atomic Cs 8p level. The experimental approach is a novel combination of
pulsed optical pumping and time-delayed stimulated emission probing of the
excited level. From the measured evolution of the atomic linear polarization
degree as a function of probe delay time, we determine the hyperfine coupling
constants A = 7.42(6) MHz and B = 0.14(29) MHz
Charge-Dependence of the Nucleon-Nucleon Interaction
Based upon the Bonn meson-exchange-model for the nucleon-nucleon ()
interaction, we calculate the charge-independence breaking (CIB) of the
interaction due to pion-mass splitting. Besides the one-pion-exchange (OPE), we
take into account the -exchange model and contributions from three and
four irreducible pion exchanges. We calculate the CIB differences in the
effective range parameters as well as phase shift differences for
partial waves up to total angular momentum J=4 and laboratory energies below
300 MeV. We find that the CIB effect from OPE dominates in all partial waves.
However, the CIB effects from the model are noticable up to D-waves and
amount to about 40% of the OPE CIB-contribution in some partial waves, at 300
MeV. The effects from 3 and 4 contributions are negligible except in
and .Comment: 12 pages, RevTex, 14 figure
Precise Measurement of Sigma Beam Asymmetry for Positive Pion Photoproduction on the Proton from 800 to 1500 Mev
The Sigma beam asymmetry for positive pion photoproduction on the proton has
been measured over an angular range of 40-170 deg at photon energies from 0.8
to 1.5 GeV. The resulting data set includes 237 accurate points, 136 of these
belonging to an almost unexplored domain above 1.05 GeV. Data of such high
precision provide severe constraints for partial wave analyses. The influence
of this experiment on the GW multipole analysis is demonstrated. Significant
changes are found in multipoles connected to the S31(1620) and P13(1720)
resonances. Comparisons using the MAID analysis are also presented.Comment: 11 pages, 4 eps figures. to be published in Physics Letters
Low-Energy Compton Scattering of Polarized Photons on Polarized Nucleons
The general structure of the cross section of scattering with
polarized photon and/or nucleon in initial and/or final state is systematically
described and exposed through invariant amplitudes. A low-energy expansion of
the cross section up to and including terms of order is given which
involves ten structure parameters of the nucleon (dipole, quadrupole,
dispersion, and spin polarizabilities). Their physical meaning is discussed in
detail. Using fixed-t dispersion relations, predictions for these parameters
are obtained and compared with results of chiral perturbation theory. It is
emphasized that Compton scattering experiments at large angles can fix the most
uncertain of these structure parameters. Predictions for the cross section and
double-polarization asymmetries are given and the convergence of the expansion
is investigated. The feasibility of the experimental determination of some of
the struture parameters is discussed.Comment: 41 pages of text, 9 figures; minor revisions prior to publication in

Measurement of the Cross Section Asymmetry of the Reaction gp-->pi0p in the Resonance Energy Region Eg = 0.5 - 1.1 GeV
The cross section asymmetry Sigma has been measured for the photoproduction
of pi0-mesons off protons, using polarized photons in the energy range Eg = 0.5
- 1.1 GeV. The CM angular coverage is Theta = 85 - 125 deg with energy and
angle steps of 25 MeV and 5 deg, respectively. The obtained Sigma data, which
cover the second and third resonance regions, are compared with existing
experimental data and recent phenomenological analyses. The influence of these
measurements on such analyses is also considered
Consistent description of NN and pi-N interactions using the solitary boson exchange potential
A unified description of NN and pi-N elastic scattering is presented in the
framework of the one solitary boson exchange potential (OSBEP). This model
already successfully applied to analyze NN scattering is now extended to
describe pi-N scattering while also improving its accuracy in the NN domain. We
demonstrate the importance of regularization of pi-N scattering amplitudes
involving Delta isobars and derivative meson-nucleon couplings, as this model
always yields finite amplitudes without recourse to phenomenological form
factors. We find an empirical scaling relation of the meson self interaction
coupling constants consistent with that previously found in the study of NN
scattering. Finally, we demonstrate that the OSBEP model does not contradict
the soft-pion theorems of pi-N scattering.Comment: 29 pages RevTeX, submitted to Phys. Rev. C, further information at
