Effect of selective cholinergic denervation on the serotonergic system: implications for learning and memory

The cholinergic system has been widely implicated in cognitive processes and cholinergic loss is a classical hallmark in Alzheimer disease. Increasing evidence supports a role of the serotonergic system in cognition, possibly through a modulation of cholinergic activity. We compared selective cholinergic denervation by administration of the immunotoxin 192 IgG-saporin in the nucleus basalis of Meynert (NBM) with intracerebroventricular (ICV) lesions of the basal forebrain in male rats 7 days after lesioning. NBM lesions induced significant changes in cholinergic markers in the frontal cortex, whereas ICV lesions produced significant decreases in cholinergic markers both in the frontal cortex and hippocampus. Only ICV lesions lead to memory impairments in passive avoidance and Morris water maze tasks. Both models lead to reductions of serotonin levels in the frontal cortex. Similar changes in 5-hydroxytriptophan levels were observed, suggesting a downregulation of the rate-limiting enzyme for the synthesis of serotonin along with the cholinergic deficit. Neither 5-HT1A nor 5-HT1B receptors seem to mediate this process. These data imply that the serotonergic system in the frontal cortex can compensate for diminished cholinergic function and support the investigation of the serotonergic system as a therapeutic target to treat Alzheimer disease

Laboratory assays with non-forced exposure to predict the preferential spatial distribution of fish in two ecuadorian rivers

Trabajo presentado en la SETAC Europe 27th Annual Meeting (Environmental Quality Through Transdisciplinary Collaboration), celebrada en Bruselas del 7 al 11 de mayo de 2017.Laboratory aquatic ecotoxicity assays used to provide data for ecological risk assessments assume that, under natural conditions, organisms living in a contaminated habitat are mandatorily and continuously exposed to contaminants. This assumption neglects the ability of the organisms to detect and avoid contamination moving towards less disturbed habitats such as expected in fluvial systems. Along a river, contaminants can be dispersed forming a gradient or even be patchy distributed, conditioning the habitat selection process by organisms as well as their avoidance and preference behavior. Therefore, in the present study, we assessed the avoidance and preference responses of the model fish Danio rerio when exposed to water samples from two Ecuadorian rivers (Pescadillo River and Oro River) with different disturbance levels. A non-forced exposure system, in which water samples from different river points are simultaneously assayed, allowing organisms to move freely between river samples and select the most favorable sample, was used. Results showed that organisms presented a trend to avoid Pescadillo River upstream samples, moving downstream towards to the confluence zone with Oro River. On the other hand, fish exposed to Oro River samples preferred moving upstream. When exposed to samples from both rivers simultaneously, fish tended to prefer Oro River samples. These results leaded us to predict that, as both rivers are connected, fish avoiding environmental disturbers in Pescadillo River would move to Oro River. Therefore, effects of potential stressful conditions present in Pescadillo River that trigger avoidance response by fish may depress fish populations in that river and, indirectly, affect Oro River by inducing an unexpected fish immigration.N

Prevention of vaccine-matched and mismatched influenza in children aged 6–35 months: a multinational randomised trial across five influenza seasons

BACKGROUND: Despite the importance of vaccinating children younger than 5 years, few studies evaluating vaccine prevention of influenza have been reported in this age group. We evaluated efficacy of an inactivated quadrivalent influenza vaccine (IIV4) in children aged 6-35 months. METHODS: In this phase 3, observer-blinded, multinational trial, healthy children from 13 countries in Europe, Central America, and Asia were recruited in five independent cohorts, each in a different influenza season. Participants were randomly assigned (1:1) to either IIV4 (15 μg haemagglutinin antigen per strain per 0·5 mL dose; a single dose on day 0 for vaccine-primed children, and two doses, on days 0 and 28, for vaccine-unprimed children) or to one or two doses of a non-influenza control vaccine. Primary endpoints were moderate-to-severe influenza or all influenza (irrespective of disease severity) confirmed by RT-PCR on nasal swabs. Cultured isolates were further characterised as antigenically matched or mismatched to vaccine strains. Efficacy was assessed in the per-protocol cohort and total vaccinated cohort (time-to-event analysis), and safety was assessed in the total vaccinated cohort. FINDINGS: Between Oct 1, 2011, and Dec 31, 2014, 12 018 children were recruited into the total vaccinated cohort (6006 children in the IIV4 group and 6012 children in the control group). 356 (6%) children in the IIV4 group and 693 (12%) children in the control group had at least one case of RT-PCR-confirmed influenza. Of these 1049 influenza strains, 138 (13%) were A/H1N1, 529 (50%) were A/H3N2, 69 (7%) were B/Victoria, and 316 (30%) were B/Yamagata. Overall, 539 (64%) of 848 antigenically characterised isolates were vaccine-mismatched (16 [15%] of 105 for A/H1N1; 368 [97%] of 378 for A/H3N2; 54 [86%] of 63 for B/Victoria; 101 [33%] of 302 for B/Yamagata). Vaccine efficacy was 63% (97·5% CI 52-72) against moderate-to-severe influenza and 50% (42-57) against all influenza in the per-protocol cohort, and 64% (53-73) against moderate-to-severe influenza and 50% (42-57) against all influenza in the total vaccinated cohort. There were no clinically meaningful safety differences between IIV4 and control. INTERPRETATION: IIV4 prevented influenza A and B in children aged 6-35 months despite high levels of vaccine mismatch. Corporate philanthropy and community involvement. Analysing companies from France, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain

[EN] This paper analyses the philanthropic behaviour of companies listed on four stock markets: the IBEX 35 (Spain), CAC-40 (France), DAX-30 (Germany) and AEX-25 (Netherlands). A bibliometric method was used to obtain keywords related to corporate philanthropy in literature, while a qualitative content analysis was undertaken to obtain specific philanthropy-related words from company annual reports. 19 groups of words (codes) were defined, indicating the terms used by companies to express corporate philanthropy and community involvement, the forms they use to express such involvement, and the formulas chosen to channel their aid. The word analysis also gave information about the stakeholders that companies take into account when they become involved in community issues. Different hypotheses were stated to determine whether the use of words was related to country, firm size (revenues and employees) or industry. The use of probit regression also allowed us to obtain combinations of these variables that explained the probability of using every term together but not separately. The results indicated that the variables which most affected philanthropic codes were country and revenues. ERII 2019 es el Primer Encuentro de la Red Internacional Universitaria para el Desarrollo de la Investigación y las Publicaciones Científicas, conformada por la Universidad Católica de Colombia, la Universidad Católica de Salta (Argentina), la Universidad de Monterrey (México) y la Universidad Gabriela Mistral (Chile). Esta red tiene como principal objetivo potenciar el desarrollo de la actividad investigativa, mediante la formalización de redes de investigadores, la promoción de actividades conjuntas, el diseño de planes y movilidad y el trabajo en una red editorial.
