    Individual Research Project Research in progress for HIST 1302: United States History II Faculty Mentor: Kyle Wilkison, Ph.D. Nothing ruins an enriching intellectual experience quite like having it assigned. Consequently, Honors History 1302 students began by identifying their own passions and interests. They then chose topics of immediate and abiding personal interest and produced research projects that reflected that energy and commitment. Their research probed a marvelous variety of historical topics from culture, medicine, science, politics, and economics. They researched and wrote about anti-fascist American comic books during World War II, disturbing historic treatments for the mentally ill, advances in applied physics in motor vehicles, a sophisticated analysis of church and state in a NYC mayoral race, and one wonderfully-written explanation of credit-default swaps and the Great Recession. Ariel Furman’s splendid paper reflects the best of these freshman endeavors. The author-scholar carefully recounts the serpentine path of Gustav Klimt’s “Woman in Gold” from the complex art world of nineteenth-century Austria, through midtwentieth-century Nazi predations, on to resolution via twenty-first-century international law

    First Results of the 140^{140}Ce(n,Îł)141^{141}Ce Cross-Section Measurement at n_TOF

    An accurate measurement of the 140^{140}Ce(n,Îł) energy-dependent cross-section was performed at the n_TOF facility at CERN. This cross-section is of great importance because it represents a bottleneck for the s-process nucleosynthesis and determines to a large extent the cerium abundance in stars. The measurement was motivated by the significant difference between the cerium abundance measured in globular clusters and the value predicted by theoretical stellar models. This discrepancy can be ascribed to an overestimation of the 140^{140}Ce capture cross-section due to a lack of accurate nuclear data. For this measurement, we used a sample of cerium oxide enriched in 140^{140}Ce to 99.4%. The experimental apparatus consisted of four deuterated benzene liquid scintillator detectors, which allowed us to overcome the difficulties present in the previous measurements, thanks to their very low neutron sensitivity. The accurate analysis of the p-wave resonances and the calculation of their average parameters are fundamental to improve the evaluation of the 140^{140}Ce Maxwellian-averaged cross-section

    Measurement of the 244^{244}Cm and 246^{246}Cm Neutron-Induced Cross Sections at the n_TOF Facility

    The neutron capture reactions of the 244^{244}Cm and 246^{246}Cm isotopes open the path for the formation of heavier Cm isotopes and of heavier elements such as Bk and Cf in a nuclear reactor. In addition, both isotopes belong to the minor actinides with a large contribution to the decay heat and to the neutron emission in irradiated fuels proposed for the transmutation of nuclear waste and fast critical reactors. The available experimental data for both isotopes are very scarce. We measured the neutron capture cross section with isotopically enriched samples of 244^{244}Cm and 246^{246}Cm provided by JAEA. The measurement covers the range from 1 eV to 250 eV in the n_TOF Experimental Area 2 (EAR-2). In addition, a normalization measurement with the 244^{244}Cm sample was performed at Experimental Area 1 (EAR-1) with the Total Absorption Calorimeter (TAC)

    Men's participation in psychologic counseling services offered during in vitro fertilization treatments

    Objective: To assess frequency of male participation in psychologic support services during IVF treatments. Design: Retrospective descriptive study. Setting: University infertility clinic. Patient(s): A total of 284 low-income men receiving government-financed IVF. Intervention(s): Group counseling during treatment. Main Outcome Measure(s): Frequency of attendance to group counseling and perception of usefulness of the service. Result(s): One-half of the subjects enrolled in the counseling groups. There were no differences in clinical and demographic characteristics between attendants and nonattendants. Attendance was classified into three levels: occasional, intermediate, and consistent. Seventy-four percent of attendants fell into latter two categories. Significant differences were observed in frequency of attendance as a function of infertility etiology. Frequent attendants diagnosed with male-factor-only infertility were double the number of participants with female infertility. O

    Is That Even Checkable? An Experimental Study in Identifying Checkable Statements in Political Discourse

    The first step in journalistic fact-checking of political discourse is identifying whether statements contain “checkable facts” (i.e., not opinions). This randomized controlled experiment investigated how different demographic factors (age, gender, education, profession, and political affiliation) are associated with the ability to discern if statements contained checkable or noncheckable facts, as well as what impact training in identifying checkable facts can have on overall outcomes. A total of 3,357 participants identified checkable and noncheckable statements from a fictional political speech extract containing eight statements. Overall, participants were able to correctly identify an average of 69% of statements. Specific demographic factors (being male, young, and university educated) were positively associated with increased performance as well as working in professions that commonly analyze data, such as research. Participating in a short training session significantly increased participants’ performance. Initial political affiliation slightly reduces the ability to assess whether statements made by named politicians contained checkable facts.Fil: Merpert, Ariel.
