Mediation criteria for interactive serious games aimed at improving learning in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

The PASS intelligence theory (Planning, Attention-Arousal, Simultaneous and Successive) was used together with Feuerstein’s mediation model to develop a system of categories for mediation in educational games. This system was used to analyze and improve the design of interactive games that can enhance mediation in learning, particularly in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). To this end, interactive games designed for a tabletop device were evaluated within an educational context. 27 children (3–14 years old), who had been diagnosed with ADHD, took part. The tabletop has an intuitive system that allows children to interact directly with objects with which they are familiar, providing opportunities for play and communication. These games were evaluated by the participant observation of individual and group playing experiences, interviews, and two focus groups. The results show that mediation recommendations can be useful in the design of the games. They also confirm the need to improve the adaptability of the games to enable children with ADHD to mediate, plan, and focus their attention. With the aid of a facilitator, the mediating function of learning-games can therefore be applied in the development of the executive functions that are key to learning

Analysis of Innovative Approaches in the Class Using Conceptual Maps and Considering the Learning Styles of Students

This paper presents innovations to stimulate the autonomy of engineering students by using different active methodologies. The strategies designed to address this problem are based on analyzing students' learning styles and incorporating specific tools into teaching practice, such as "M-eRoDes, " which supports the automatic evaluation and feedback of concept maps created by them. Among the main findings, the students' assessment of the activity "making concept maps" stands out as useful but not easy. Despite the difficulty, or precisely for that reason, the experience has contributed to improve their autonomy and to develop skills to express the knowledge they have learned

A 25-year-old Spanish male travelled to Senegal in September 2009, where he swam near the Dindefelo fresh-water falls. Five weeks later, he presented with fever, myalgia, and dry cough. His complete blood count showed a hemoglobin level of 157 g/L, platelet count of 123.000 platelets/µL, and a leukocyte count of 8.670 cells/µL, with 9% eosinophils. Malaria smear, blood cultures, and serologies for common viral and bacterial infections were negative. Titers of an indirect hemagglutination test for Schistosoma mansoni were 1∶80. The patient was treated with a single dose of praziquantel (40 mg/kg) and prednisone (30 mg) for three days. After treatment, the dry cough increased and he developed moderate dyspnea, with increasing malaise and myalgia. A second blood sample revealed eosinophilia of 1.200 cells/µL. A chest X-ray showed patchy infiltrates in both lungs (Figure 1), and a CT scan showed multiple peripheral bilateral pseudonodular lesions with surrounding ground-glass-opacity halo

Trasplante combinado de corazón e hígado; CardiomiopatíaTrasplantament combinat de fetge i cor; CardiomiopatiaCombined heart-liver transplant; CardiomyopathyBackground Uhl's anomaly is an extremely rare congenital heart defect characterized by absence of the right ventricle myocardium and preserved left ventricular myocardium. Although the disease has a poor prognosis and is generally fatal in the perinatal period, some patients may reach adulthood. Methods We describe a case of Uhl's anomaly complicated with heart failure and decompensated cardiac cirrhosis in a 42-year-old man treated by combined heart-liver transplant. Results The patient underwent heart transplant using the bicaval technique followed by subsequent liver transplant with the piggyback technique without venovenous bypass. Total ischemia time was 108 minutes for the heart and 360 and 25 minutes of cold and warm ischemia, respectively, for the liver. No intraoperative complications occurred. The patient was discharged without severe complications on postoperative day 22. Pathologic examination of the organs reported advanced cirrhosis of the liver and severe dilated myocardiopathy of right ventricle with absence of myocardium and a normal left ventricle. Twenty-seven months after the transplant the patient has been free from hospital admissions, with normal function of both transplanted organs. Conclusions We report the first successful combined heart-liver transplant for Uhl's anomaly indication in an adult patient. Despite of the insufficient knowledge of natural history of this exceptional disease, we successfully apply the management principles of other end-stage right heart disorders complicated with liver failure
