    Motif-based communities in complex networks

Community definitions usually focus on edges, inside and between the communities. However, the high density of edges within a community determines correlations between nodes going beyond nearest-neighbours, and which are indicated by the presence of motifs. We show how motifs can be used to define general classes of nodes, including communities, by extending the mathematical expression of Newman-Girvan modularity. We construct then a general framework and apply it to some synthetic and real networks

Optimal map of the modular structure of complex networks

Modular structure is pervasive in many complex networks of interactions observed in natural, social and technological sciences. Its study sheds light on the relation between the structure and function of complex systems. Generally speaking, modules are islands of highly connected nodes separated by a relatively small number of links. Every module can have contributions of links from any node in the network. The challenge is to disentangle these contributions to understand how the modular structure is built. The main problem is that the analysis of a certain partition into modules involves, in principle, as many data as number of modules times number of nodes. To confront this challenge, here we first define the contribution matrix, the mathematical object containing all the information about the partition of interest, and after, we use a Truncated Singular Value Decomposition to extract the best representation of this matrix in a plane. The analysis of this projection allow us to scrutinize the skeleton of the modular structure, revealing the structure of individual modules and their interrelations.Comment: 21 pages, 10 figure

Resilience, Acculturative Stress, and Family Norms Against Disclosure of Mental Health Problems Among Foreign-Born Filipino American Women

The present study explores the relationships between resilience, acculturative stress, and family norms against disclosure of mental health problems among foreign-born Filipino American women. The sample consisted of 159 foreign-born Filipino American women aged 18 years and above and residing in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. Participants completed paper-and-pencil questionnaires. Results indicated high levels of resilience and moderate levels of acculturative stress. Findings also showed a significant negative correlation between resilience and acculturative stress, and a significant predictive effect of resilience on acculturative stress. We also found a significant negative relationship between resilience and family norms against disclosure of mental health problems but no significant mediating effect of resilience on the relationship between acculturative stress and family norms. This lack of significant findings related to the mediating effect of resilience on the relationship between acculturative stress and family norms against disclosure of mental illness may be due to the absence of theoretical models and research regarding the role of resilience in the context of acculturation among Filipino American women. Our findings imply the need to further explore underlying mechanisms that explain the relationships between resilience, acculturative stress, and family norms. The findings of the study also confirm the need to develop interventions and resources that ameliorate acculturative stress and promote an increase of the disclosure and reporting of mental health problems among Filipino American women

Community detection in complex networks using Extremal Optimization

We propose a novel method to find the community structure in complex networks based on an extremal optimization of the value of modularity. The method outperforms the optimal modularity found by the existing algorithms in the literature. We present the results of the algorithm for computer simulated and real networks and compare them with other approaches. The efficiency and accuracy of the method make it feasible to be used for the accurate identification of community structure in large complex networks.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Aim. Assess the results of the reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in patients over 40 years after a minimum follow-up of 24 months. Material and Methods. Retrospective review of 37 patients undergoing surgery for ACL reconstruction between 2002-2013, over 40 years with a minimum follow-up of 24 months. 25 patients were available for clinical review, which consisted of physical examination, radiographic and arthrometric KT-1000 studies, functional tests and subjective assessment of the knee through surveys (International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC), Tegner and Lysholm-Tegner). Results. At follow-up, at least 2 of the 3 knee instability maneuvers (Pivot-shift, Lachman, Anterior drawer test) were positive in 6 of 25 patients (24%). The difference of antero-posterior laxity compared with the healthy knee using KT-1000 arthrometer to 89N was greater than 3mm in 5 patients (20%). None had a greater difference of 5mm. Only 6 patients recovered their previous level of activity, according to the Tegner test. However, the average score on the Lysholm test was 81,40 ± 19,56 points, with good or excellent results in 15 patients (60%). IKDC test results were less conspicuous, with good or excellent results in 7 patients (28%). Conclusions. The results after ACL reconstruction in patients older than 40 years old are good, with a high degree of satisfaction and are comparable to those in younger patients. Although return to previous activity level is less than in younger groups, age should not be a limiting to indicate an ACL reconstruction factor in an unstable knee

Synchronization in a ring of pulsating oscillators with bidirectional couplings

We study the dynamical behavior of an ensemble of oscillators interacting through short range bidirectional pulses. The geometry is 1D with periodic boundary conditions. Our interest is twofold. To explore the conditions required to reach fully synchronization and to invewstigate the time needed to get such state. We present both theoretical and numerical results.Comment: Revtex, 4 pages, 2 figures. To appear in Int. J. Bifurc. and Chao

Dynamical and spectral properties of complex networks

Dynamical properties of complex networks are related to the spectral properties of the Laplacian matrix that describes the pattern of connectivity of the network. In particular we compute the synchronization time for different types of networks and different dynamics. We show that the main dependence of the synchronization time is on the smallest nonzero eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrix, in contrast to other proposals in terms of the spectrum of the adjacency matrix. Then, this topological property becomes the most relevant for the dynamics.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, to be published in New Journal of Physic

Discriminatory language in the workplace: unmasking prejudices and stereotypes

    Get PDF
The link between language, communication and open discrimination has been the focus of numerous studies. For many years, language has been a vehicle of prejudice and negative stereotypes. However, in the last few years, overt verbal aggressions have diminished thanks to the implementation of equality policies and awareness-raising initiatives. Despite that, negative attitudes against protected groups might not have disappeared and may instead be transmitted subtly, such as through uncivil language. The goal of this research is to study the relation between language and subtle discrimination against lesbian and gay (LG) workers. With this goal in mind, 39 in-depth interviews were conducted. The analysis showed that LG people are victims of subtle discrimination and that language is one of the most common vehicles of prejudice and negative stereotypes. Jokes, inappropriate comments and questions are the expression of negative attitudes, which are probably present at an implicit level. Due to the ambiguity of these expressions and the settings where they have been studied — the workplace — these acts could be defined as uncivil behaviours. Practical implications, limitations and directions for future research are discussed.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Round trunk squash : two new varieties

    Get PDF
Se obtuvieron así dos nuevos cultivares de crecimiento arbustoide, buena cobertura; frutos de cáscara verde, dura, lisa y limpia; mejor proporción y calidad de pul-pa (textura, color y tenor azucarino), denominadas YANQUE FCA y YANTA FCA.The main objective of this study was to improve the quality of the mature fruit of the round trunk squash [Cucurbita máxima Duch., vr zapallito (Carriére) Millán], so that it could be used as a double purpose squash and not only for stuffing when green. Whit that aim in view, it was necessary to eliminate undesirable characteristics such as : lack of uniformity, low proportion of pulp, loss of flavor an do good aspect, presen ce of roughnesses, warts, marked “turbans"and, especially, soft skin at maturity, which made it very susceptible to disease. The phytogenetic material used to begin this development was obteined from a collection of over 500 homozygous, shruby, and plagiotropous lines, made up by the progenies of the crossing between Zapallito (Carriére)Millán with Var. Typica and Var. Zipinka. As a result, we have developed two new lines of squash of shruby growth, good cover, skin that is green, hard, smooth and clean, and better proportion and quality of pulp (in texture, color, and sugar content), named YANQUE FCA and YANTA FCAFil: Bartucciotto, C.
