    Responses to intensity-shifted auditory feedback during running speech

    PURPOSE: Responses to intensity perturbation during running speech were measured to understand whether prosodic features are controlled in an independent or integrated manner. METHOD: Nineteen English-speaking healthy adults (age range = 21-41 years) produced 480 sentences in which emphatic stress was placed on either the 1st or 2nd word. One participant group received an upward intensity perturbation during stressed word production, and the other group received a downward intensity perturbation. Compensations for perturbation were evaluated by comparing differences in participants' stressed and unstressed peak fundamental frequency (F0), peak intensity, and word duration during perturbed versus baseline trials. RESULTS: Significant increases in stressed-unstressed peak intensities were observed during the ramp and perturbation phases of the experiment in the downward group only. Compensations for F0 and duration did not reach significance for either group. CONCLUSIONS: Consistent with previous work, speakers appear sensitive to auditory perturbations that affect a desired linguistic goal. In contrast to previous work on F0 perturbation that supported an integrated-channel model of prosodic control, the current work only found evidence for intensity-specific compensation.     ERPs reveal the temporal dynamics of auditory word recognition in specific language impairment.

    We used event-related potentials (ERPs) to compare auditory word recognition in children with specific language impairment (SLI group; N=14) to a group of typically developing children (TD group; N=14). Subjects were presented with pictures of items and heard auditory words that either matched or mismatched the pictures. Mismatches overlapped expected words in word-onset (cohort mismatches; see: DOLL, hear: dog), rhyme (CONE -bone), or were unrelated (SHELL -mug). In match trials, the SLI group showed a different pattern of N100 responses to auditory stimuli compared to the TD group, indicative of early auditory processing differences in SLI. However, the phonological mapping negativity (PMN) response to mismatching items was comparable across groups, suggesting that just like TD children, children with SLI are capable of establishing phonological expectations and detecting violations of these expectations in an online fashion. Perhaps most importantly, we observed a lack of attenuation of the N400 for rhyming words in the SLI group, which suggests that either these children were not as sensitive to rhyme similarity as their typically developing peers, or did not suppress lexical alternatives to the same extent. These findings help shed light on the underlying deficits responsible for SLI

    Salve Regina Arboretum Ten Year Plan to Reach Level III Accreditation

    The Salve Regina University Arboretum, located in Newport, Rhode Island is currently registered as a Level II arboretum and is intertwined with the city of Newport Arboretum. The university now has intentions to reach Level III status, as part of a ten-year plan. This plan was developed by the students of the Spring 2018 BIO 255: Conservation Biology course, instructed by Dr. Jameson Chace, Associate Professor of biology at Salve Regina University. As part of a curriculum geared towards civic engagement, the class focused on creating and optimizing strategies that can be applied to the ten-year plan. These strategies were applied to the plan categorically: a team to inventory the current tree collection; a team to develop formal educational programming; a team for informal educational programming; a team to establish goals for conservation initiative related to the arboretum; a team dedicated to research related to arboreta; and a team to develop a list of species of special interest to add to the arboretum in the coming years. In the following document, each team’s strategies for the ten-year plan are outlined. Each of the components of this plan incorporate means to fulfill the conditions to meet Level III arboretum status so that the arboretum can apply for official registration. The aforementioned teams were tasked with designing a foundation on which to work up from. This includes formal educational programming to be applied to classroom settings and informal educational programming which can be applied to community outreach-based settings. The teams that worked to strengthen the arboretum’s mission of conservation focused on researching trees that can fit into the current landscape while providing some sort of benefit to the surrounding flora/fauna. Further, many of the species of interest, such as the chestnut, hold historical value to the greater Rhode Island region. In all, the Salve Regina Arboretum must achieve a total of 500 unique species of trees and woody plants as part of its efforts to apply for Level III status. In addition to the programming and research performed so far by the student teams, the arboretum must also hire a curator to manage the programming and to oversee the arboretum as a whole. Additionally, the arboretum must continue to actively collaborate with other arboreta and should encourage scientific research. It is important to recognize that the Salve Regina University Arboretum has already been utilized in the field of microbiology and has gained some attention at the university as a resource for further research and investigation. This ten year plan, along with resources within in it, is designed to provide a list of potential guidelines and ideas that can be applied for the arboretum’s benefit and growth.     Evaluation of an electronic consultation service in psychiatry for primary care providers

    Abstract Background This study explores the effectiveness of an electronic consultation (eConsult) service between primary care providers and psychiatry, and the types and content of the clinical questions that were asked. Methods This is a retrospective eConsult review study. All eConsults directed to Psychiatry from July 2011 to January 2015 by Primary care providers were reviewed. Response time and the amount of time reported by the specialist to answer each eConsult was analyzed. Each eConsult was also categorized by clinical topic and question type in predetermined categories. Mandatory post-eConsult surveys for primary care providers were analyzed to determine the number of traditional consults avoided and to gain insight into the perceived value of eConsults. Results Of the 5597 eConsults, 169 psychiatry eConsults were completed during the study period. The average response time for a specialist to a primary care provider was 2.3 days. Eighty-seven percent of clinical responses were completed by the psychiatrist in less than 15 min. The primary care providers most commonly asked clinical questions were about depressive and anxiety disorders. 88.7% of PCPs rated the eConsult service a 5 (excellent value) or 4. Conclusions This study indicates that an eConsult psychiatry service has tremendous potential to improve access to psychiatric advice and expand the capacity to treat mental illness in primary care. Future research may include follow-up with PCPs regarding the implementation of specialist advice

    Habitat suitability maps for Australian flora and fauna under CMIP6 climate scenarios

    Abstract Background Spatial information about the location and suitability of areas for native plant and animal species under different climate futures is an important input to land use and conservation planning and management. Australia, renowned for its abundant species diversity and endemism, often relies on modeled data to assess species distributions due to the country’s vast size and the challenges associated with conducting on-ground surveys on such a large scale. The objective of this article is to develop habitat suitability maps for Australian flora and fauna under different climate futures. Results Using MaxEnt, we produced Australia-wide habitat suitability maps under RCP2.6-SSP1, RCP4.5-SSP2, RCP7.0-SSP3, and RCP8.5-SSP5 climate futures for 1,382 terrestrial vertebrates and 9,251 vascular plants vascular plants at 5 km2 for open access. This represents 60% of all Australian mammal species, 77% of amphibian species, 50% of reptile species, 71% of bird species, and 44% of vascular plant species. We also include tabular data, which include summaries of total quality-weighted habitat area of species under different climate scenarios and time periods. Conclusions The spatial data supplied can help identify important and sensitive locations for species under various climate futures. Additionally, the supplied tabular data can provide insights into the impacts of climate change on biodiversity in Australia. These habitat suitability maps can be used as input data for landscape and conservation planning or species management, particularly under different climate change scenarios in Australia

    Excitatory and inhibitory responses in the brain to experimental pain: A systematic review of MR spectroscopy studies

    Background The role of the brain in processing pain has been extensively investigated using various functional imaging techniques coupled with well controlled noxious stimuli. Studies applying experimental pain have also used proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS). The advantage of MRS compared to other techniques is the capacity to non-invasively examine metabolites involved in neurotransmission of pain, including glutamate, Îł-aminobutyric acid (GABA), glutamate + glutamine (Glx), and glutamine. Objective To systematically review MRS studies used in the context of studying experimental pain in healthy human participants. Data sources PubMed, Ovid Medline, and Embase databases were searched using pre-specified search terms. Eligibility criteria Studies investigating glutamate, GABA, Glx and/or glutamine in relation to experimental pain (e.g., heat) in healthy participants via MRS. Appraisal criteria Each study was evaluated with a modified quality criterion (used in previous imaging systematic reviews) as well as a risk of bias assessment. Results From 5275 studies, 14 met the selection criteria. Studies fell into two general categories, those examining changes in metabolites triggered by noxious stimulation or examining the relationship between sensitivity to pain and resting metabolite levels. In five (out of ten) studies, glutamate, Glx and/or glutamine increased significantly in response to experimental pain (compared to baseline) in three different brain areas. To date, there is no evidence to suggest Glx, glutamate or glutamine levels decrease, suggesting an overall effect in favour of increased excitation to pain. In addition to no changes, both increases and decreases were reported for levels of GABA+ (=GABA + macromolecules). A positive correlation between pain sensitivity and resting glutamate and Glx levels were reported across three studies (out of three). Further research is needed to examine the relationship of GABA+ and pain sensitivity. Limitations A major limitation of our review was a limited number of studies that used MRS to examine experimental pain. In light of this and major differences in study design, we did not attempt to aggregate results in a meta-analysis. As for the studies we reviewed, there was a limited number of brain areas were examined by studies included in our review. Moreover, the majority of studies included lacked an adequate control condition (i.e., non-noxious stimulation) or blinding, which represent a major source of potential bias. Conclusion MRS represents a promising tool to examine the brain in pain, functionally, and at rest with support for increased glutamate, glutamine and Glx levels in relation to pain. Implications Resting and functional MRS should be viewed as complementary to existing neuroimaging techniques, and serve to investigate the brain in pain.ISSN:1053-8119ISSN:1095-957

    GEOSS Architecture Implementation Pilot-II: Integrating Technologies and Expertise to Build GEOSS

    There are numerous, distributed Earth observations that are in principle available and useful for societal benefit applications such as analysis of air quality events or renewable energy. Currently, Earth observation providers face challenges efficiently disseminating data to users in needed formats. Data users also face hurdles in finding, accessing, and using the right Earth observations for their needs. GEOSS is designed to reduce the burden on both the provider and the user, by providing easier data discovery and access to distributed resources through standard protocols and open architecture. The GEOSS Architecture Implementation Pilot-II (AIP-II) was organized with workgroups for societal benefit areas (SBAs) and transverse technologies (TTs). The SBA workgroups used their domain expertise to test end-to-end flow of data and metadata from data providers to data users with specific application needs. GEOSS mandates that metadata and data are registered using standard protocols such as WMS and WCS for data access and ISO 19115 and 19119 for metadata. These standards allowed the data being registered in community catalogs to be findable in the GEOSS Clearinghouse and automatically accessible through WMS viewers and other tools. The TT workgroups tied the diverse SBAs together by helping the SBAs implement standards for data access and metadata and develop common tools and methods that could be used by the SBAs. The TT workgroups laid out a set of use cases which provide a framework for different groups to add components that aided the end-to-end flow of data to the user. Collaboratively, the workgroups implemented the use cases and developed and refined the processes of deploying, documenting, and registering data through the GEOSS Common Infrastructure (GCI) for use in societal benefit area applications. The SBA and TT workgroups were connected through weekly discussions, and the work was captured using an online collaborative workspace. This allowed SBA workgroups to be aware of each other's work, allowed the transverse technology work groups to provide resources for each use case step, and exposed issues with implementation of a particular standard or process in the GCI. The completion of AIP-II resulted in data access services being found and accessed through the GCI by users. However, this is just the first step and a focus for the next phase of AIP is for scientists and other end-users to use data available through GEOSS for scientific exploration and understanding
