Non-singlet Q-deformed N=(1,0) and N=(1,1/2) U(1) actions
In this paper we construct N=(1,0) and N=(1,1/2) non-singlet Q-deformed
supersymmetric U(1) actions in components. We obtain an exact expression for
the enhanced supersymmetry action by turning off particular degrees of freedom
of the deformation tensor. We analyze the behavior of the action upon restoring
weekly some of the deformation parameters, obtaining a non trivial interaction
term between a scalar and the gauge field, breaking the supersymmetry down to
N=(1,0). Additionally, we present the corresponding set of unbroken
supersymmetry transformations. We work in harmonic superspace in four Euclidean
dimensions.Comment: 14 pages, typos corrected, equation (2.8) replaced by a more

Quantum coherence in the presence of unobservable quantities
State representations summarize our knowledge about a system. When
unobservable quantities are introduced the state representation is typically no
longer unique. However, this non-uniqueness does not affect subsequent
inferences based on any observable data. We demonstrate that the inference-free
subspace may be extracted whenever the quantity's unobservability is guaranteed
by a global conservation law. This result can generalize even without such a
guarantee. In particular, we examine the coherent-state representation of a
laser where the absolute phase of the electromagnetic field is believed to be
unobservable. We show that experimental coherent states may be separated from
the inference-free subspaces induced by this unobservable phase. These physical
states may then be approximated by coherent states in a relative-phase Hilbert
space
Monotonicity of quantum relative entropy revisited
Monotonicity under coarse-graining is a crucial property of the quantum
relative entropy. The aim of this paper is to investigate the condition of
equality in the monotonicity theorem and in its consequences such as the strong
sub-additivity of the von Neumann entropy, the Golden-Thompson trace inequality
and the monotonicity of the Holevo quantity. The relation to quantum Markovian
states is briefly indicated.Comment: 13 pages, LATEX fil
Wodzicki residue and anomalies of current algebras
The commutator anomalies (Schwinger terms) of current algebras in
dimensions are computed in terms of the Wodzicki residue of pseudodifferential
operators; the result can be written as a (twisted) Radul 2-cocycle for the Lie
algebra of PSDO's. The construction of the (second quantized) current algebra
is closely related to a geometric renormalization of the interaction
Hamiltonian in gauge theory.Comment: 15 pages, updated version of a talk at the Baltic School in Field

Identification of the protein kinases Pyk3 and Phg2 as regulators of the STATc-mediated response to hyperosmolarity
Cellular adaptation to changes in environmental osmolarity is crucial for cell survival. In Dictyostelium, STATc is a key regulator of the transcriptional response to hyperosmotic stress. Its phosphorylation and consequent activation is controlled by two signaling branches, one cGMP- and the other Ca(2+)-dependent, of which many signaling components have yet to be identified. The STATc stress signalling pathway feeds back on itself by upregulating the expression of STATc and STATc-regulated genes. Based on microarray studies we chose two tyrosine-kinase like proteins, Pyk3 and Phg2, as possible modulators of STATc phosphorylation and generated single and double knock-out mutants to them. Transcriptional regulation of STATc and STATc dependent genes was disturbed in pyk3(-), phg2(-), and pyk3(-)/phg2(-) cells. The absence of Pyk3 and/or Phg2 resulted in diminished or completely abolished increased transcription of STATc dependent genes in response to sorbitol, 8-Br-cGMP and the Ca(2+) liberator BHQ. Also, phospho-STATc levels were significantly reduced in pyk3(-) and phg2(-) cells and even further decreased in pyk3(-)/phg2(-) cells. The reduced phosphorylation was mirrored by a significant delay in nuclear translocation of GFP-STATc. The protein tyrosine phosphatase 3 (PTP3), which dephosphorylates and inhibits STATc, is inhibited by stress-induced phosphorylation on S448 and S747. Use of phosphoserine specific antibodies showed that Phg2 but not Pyk3 is involved in the phosphorylation of PTP3 on S747. In pull-down assays Phg2 and PTP3 interact directly, suggesting that Phg2 phosphorylates PTP3 on S747 in vivo. Phosphorylation of S448 was unchanged in phg2(-) cells. We show that Phg2 and an, as yet unknown, S448 protein kinase are responsible for PTP3 phosphorylation and hence its inhibition, and that Pyk3 is involved in the regulation of STATc by either directly or indirectly activating it. Our results add further complexities to the regulation of STATc, which presumably ensure its optimal activation in response to different environmental cues
To synchronize or not to synchronize, that is the question: finite-size scaling and fluctuation effects in the Kuramoto model
The entrainment transition of coupled random frequency oscillators presents a
long-standing problem in nonlinear physics. The onset of entrainment in
populations of large but finite size exhibits strong sensitivity to
fluctuations in the oscillator density at the synchronizing frequency. This is
the source for the unusual values assumed by the correlation size exponent
. Locally coupled oscillators on a -dimensional lattice exhibit two
types of frequency entrainment: symmetry-breaking at , and aggregation
of compact synchronized domains in three and four dimensions. Various critical
properties of the transition are well captured by finite-size scaling relations
with simple yet unconventional exponent values.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure, to appear in a special issue of JSTAT dedicated to

De Finetti theorem on the CAR algebra
The symmetric states on a quasi local C*-algebra on the infinite set of
indices J are those invariant under the action of the group of the permutations
moving only a finite, but arbitrary, number of elements of J. The celebrated De
Finetti Theorem describes the structure of the symmetric states (i.e.
exchangeable probability measures) in classical probability. In the present
paper we extend De Finetti Theorem to the case of the CAR algebra, that is for
physical systems describing Fermions. Namely, after showing that a symmetric
state is automatically even under the natural action of the parity
automorphism, we prove that the compact convex set of such states is a Choquet
simplex, whose extremal (i.e. ergodic w.r.t. the action of the group of
permutations previously described) are precisely the product states in the
sense of Araki-Moriya. In order to do that, we also prove some ergodic
properties naturally enjoyed by the symmetric states which have a
self--containing interest.Comment: 23 pages, juornal reference: Communications in Mathematical Physics,

Safe Local Navigation for Visually Impaired Users With a Time-of-Flight and Haptic Feedback Device
This paper presents ALVU (Array of Lidars and Vibrotactile Units), a contactless, intuitive, hands-free, and discreet wearable device that allows visually impaired users to detect low- and high-hanging obstacles, as well as physical boundaries in their immediate environment. The solution allows for safe local navigation in both confined and open spaces by enabling the user to distinguish free space from obstacles. The device presented is composed of two parts: a sensor belt and a haptic strap. The sensor belt is an array of time-of-flight distance sensors worn around the front of a user's waist, and the pulses of infrared light provide reliable and accurate measurements of the distances between the user and surrounding obstacles or surfaces. The haptic strap communicates the measured distances through an array of vibratory motors worn around the user's upper abdomen, providing haptic feedback. The linear vibration motors are combined with a point-loaded pretensioned applicator to transmit isolated vibrations to the user. We validated the device's capability in an extensive user study entailing 162 trials with 12 blind users. Users wearing the device successfully walked through hallways, avoided obstacles, and detected staircases.Andrea Bocelli FoundationNational Science Foundation (U.S.) (Grant NSF IIS1226883
The role of infrared divergence for decoherence
Continuous and discrete superselection rules induced by the interaction with
the environment are investigated for a class of exactly soluble Hamiltonian
models. The environment is given by a Boson field. Stable superselection
sectors emerge if and only if the low frequences dominate and the ground state
of the Boson field disappears due to infrared divergence. The models allow
uniform estimates of all transition matrix elements between different
superselection sectors.Comment: 11 pages, extended and simplified proo
