    The delamination of metalized multilayer flexible packaging using a microperforation technique

    Multilayer flexible packaging waste is a critical issue in the field of waste management as it is considered a non-recyclable material. One of the solutions to increase its recyclability is the delamination, which allows the recycling of the different polymer layers separately. This study investigated the optimization of the delamination by microperforating this plastic. The diffusion model was described by Fick's first law. The delamination process was tested at three different temperatures (50, 65 and 80 °C) with caustic soda. In addition, the influence of other parameters such as the thickness of aluminium layer, the presence of inks and the use of surfactants was tested. As a result, the microperforation technique improved the delamination rate by decreasing the residence time by 83% at the optimum conditions studied, being the thickness of the metal and the temperature essential factors affecting the process.     Preimaginal morphology and notes on the natural history of some Afrotropical flower flies of genus Eumerus Meigen 1822 (Diptera Syrphidae) including description of a new species

    The main study objective was to build knowledge on the genus Eumerus in the Afrotropical region. The new species Eumerus rufotibialis Radenkovic et Vujic sp. nov. of the E. obliquus group is thus reported. Also presented are the preimaginal stages of the mentioned species and Eumerus compactus van Doesburg 1966 as well as Eumerus astropilops Hull 1964. The descriptions were elaborated using scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy imaging; supporting images, diagnostical features and comparisons with available descriptions have been included, both for imago and preimaginal descriptions.     A Modular Mobile Robotic Platform to Assist People with Different Degrees of Disability

    Robotics to support elderly people in living independently and to assist disabled people in carrying out the activities of daily living independently have demonstrated good results. Basically, there are two approaches: one of them is based on mobile robot assistants, such as Care-O-bot, PR2, and Tiago, among others; the other one is the use of an external robotic arm or a robotic exoskeleton fixed or mounted on a wheelchair. In this paper, a modular mobile robotic platform to assist moderately and severely impaired people based on an upper limb robotic exoskeleton mounted on a robotized wheel chair is presented. This mobile robotic platform can be customized for each user’s needs by exploiting its modularity. Finally, experimental results in a simulated home environment with a living room and a kitchen area, in order to simulate the interaction of the user with different elements of a home, are presented. In this experiment, a subject suffering from multiple sclerosis performed different activities of daily living (ADLs) using the platform in front of a group of clinicians composed of nurses, doctors, and occupational therapists. After that, the subject and the clinicians replied to a usability questionnaire.     Insights from the preimaginal morphology of the constans species‑group, to reveal novel morphological patterns of the Merodon albifrons‑evolutionary lineage (Diptera, Syrphidae)

    Merodon triangulum Vujić, Radenković & Hurkmans, 2020 is a European endemic hoverfly species belonging to Merodon constans species-group, inside albifrons-lineage. The distribution of this species is known to be mostly central Europe and Balkan peninsula and it has been categorized as Near Threatened in the European IUCN red list of hoverflies; this paper cites the species for the first time in Ukraine (western Ukraine, specifically). In the present study, the preimaginal stages of this species are described and figured using Scanning Electron Microscopy. The material used for the descriptions were larvae collected in Ukraine and Serbia feeding inside underground storage organs of the spring snowflake Leucojum vernum L., 1753. This morphological description constitutes the first one inside the constans species-group, and the sixth description of the albifrons-lineage, in which there is only one species-group left to have at least one species of the preimaginal stages described (i.e., ruficornis species-group). The descriptions were compared with the rest available of the genus, stating the diagnostical characters of the present species and the shared characters inside the lineage. The novel information provided on the trophic interaction between M. triangulum larvae and Leucojum bulbs is stated for the first time and further supports the association of the constans species-group with the underground storage organs of snowflakes and snowdrops (Galantheae) in their role as host plants.Partial financial support was received from the research department of the University of Alicante in the frame work of a predoctoral grant (UAFPU2019-03).     Characterization of preimaginal developmental stages of two cryptic South African species of the Merodon planifacies complex (Diptera: Syrphidae: Eristalinae: Merodontini), with differentiation through morphometry analysis

    Merodon capi Vujić et Radenković, 2020 and Merodon roni Radenković et Vujić, 2020 are two cryptic species belonging to the Merodon planifacies Bezzi, 1915 species complex that have recently been described, with the differences between them being revealed by molecular and geometric morphometry studies of adult specimens. In the present study, the preimaginal morphology of both species is described and displayed, with the material used corresponding to samples taken from bulbs of Merwilla plumbea (Lindl.) Speta plants at two locations in KwaZulu-Natal province (South Africa). The preimaginal stages were compared, looking for morphological evidence supporting species divergence. Linear and geometric morphometric analyses of the larval posterior respiratory process were conducted for the first time and the results of these analyses support the separation of the two taxa. Information about the life cycle and the relation with the host plant is also provided. In addition, we carried out a preliminary study of the adult feeding requirements of the species, based on the description of the mouthparts and an analysis of the pollen present in the gut and on the integument of adults.     Tele-Rehabilitation Versus Local Rehabilitation Therapies Assisted by Robotic Devices: A Pilot Study with Patients

    The present study aims to evaluate the advantages of a master-slave robotic rehabilitation therapy in which the patient is assisted in real-time by a therapist. We have also explored if this type of strategy is applicable in a tele-rehabilitation environment. A pilot study has been carried out involving 10 patients who have performed a point-to-point rehabilitation exercise supported by three assistance modalities: fixed assistance (without therapist interaction), local therapist assistance, and remote therapist assistance in a simulated tele-rehabiliation scenario. The rehabilitation exercise will be performed using an upper-limb rehabilitation robotic device that assists the patients through force fields. The results suggest that the assistance provided by the therapist is better adapted to patient needs than fixed assistance mode. Therefore, it maximizes the patient’s level of effort, which is an important aspect to improve the rehabilitation outcomes. We have also seen that in a tele-rehabilitation environment it is more difficult to assess when to assist the patient than locally.     Interaction between sex and neurofilament light chain on brain structure and clinical severity in Huntington's disease

Here, we describe how sex modifies the impact of neurodegeneration on brain atrophy and clinical severity in HD. Cerebrospinal fluid neurofilament light chain (NfL) levels were used as a biological measure of neurodegeneration, and brain atrophy was assessed by structural magnetic resonance imaging. We found that larger NfL values in women reflect higher brain atrophy and clinical severity than in men (p < 0.05 for an interaction model). This differential vulnerability could have important implications in clinical trials

    Predicting Impulse Control Disorders in Parkinson Disease through Incentive Biomarkers

Methods: The longitudinal cohort consisted of consecutive nondemented PD patients with no ICD history. We recorded FRN signals while they performed a gambling task. We calculated the mean amplitude difference between losses and gains (FRNdiff) to be used as a predictor of future ICD development. We performed prospective biannual follow-up assessments for 30 months to detect incident ICDs. Finally, we evaluated how basal FRNdiff was associated with posterior development of ICDs using survival models. Results: Between October 7, 2015 and December 16, 2016, we screened 120 patients. Among them, 94 patients performed the gambling and 92 completed the follow-up. Eighteen patients developed ICDs during follow-up, whereas 74 remained free of ICDs. Baseline FRNdiff was greater in patients who developed ICDs than in those who did not (−2.33μV vs −0.84μV, p = 0.001). No other significant baseline differences were found. The FRNdiff was significantly associated with ICD development in the survival models both when not adjusted (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.73, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.58-0.91, p = 0.006) and when controlling for dopamine replacement therapy, sex, and age (HR = 0.74, 95% CI = 0.55-0.97, p = 0.035). None of the impulsivity measures evaluated was related to ICD development. Interpretation: Reward-processing differences measured by FRN signals precede ICD development in PD. This neurophysiological marker permits identification of patients with high risk of ICD development. ANN NEUROL 2022;92:974-984

    Analysis, Characterization, Prediction and Attribution of Extreme Atmospheric Events with Machine Learning: a Review

    Atmospheric Extreme Events (EEs) cause severe damages to human societies and ecosystems. The frequency and intensity of EEs and other associated events are increasing in the current climate change and global warming risk. The accurate prediction, characterization, and attribution of atmospheric EEs is therefore a key research field, in which many groups are currently working by applying different methodologies and computational tools. Machine Learning (ML) methods have arisen in the last years as powerful techniques to tackle many of the problems related to atmospheric EEs. This paper reviews the ML algorithms applied to the analysis, characterization, prediction, and attribution of the most important atmospheric EEs. A summary of the most used ML techniques in this area, and a comprehensive critical review of literature related to ML in EEs, are provided.
