    Recognising resilience factors among people living with HIV seeking to adopt

    This article discusses the challenges faced by people living with HIV in the adoption process, looking especially at resilience factors. Resilience is framed in the context of HIV-related infertility that motivates people living with HIV to apply for adoption. The article draws on psychological definitions of resilience and presents four factors that promote and sustain it: individual strengths, good health management, social network and wider recognition in society. This is illustrated by a case study. The study emphasises that ‘the prospective adoptive child’ should always be at the centre of any assessments and encourages social workers to consider sensitive and inclusive practice when assessing prospective adopters living with HIV

    Enzymatic degradation of starch thermoplastic blends using samples of different thickness

    The material studied was a thermoplastic blend of corn starch with a poly(ethylene-vinyl alcohol) copolymer, SEVA-C. The influence of both the material’s exposed surface and enzyme concentration on degradation kinetics was studied. As α-amylase is present in the blood plasma, experiments were performed, varying the material thickness and the α-amylase between 50 and 100 units/l, at 37°C, lasting up to 90 days. Four different batches using SEVA-C and starch samples of different thickness were performed. The positive correlation between degradation rate and the exposed material surface was confirmed, since thin films with larger exposed surfaces were degraded faster than thick square plates having the same total mass. The degradation extent depends on the total amount of amorphous starch present in the formulation rather than on the amount of enzyme used and the minimum thickness to ensure maximum degradation was estimated to be close to 0.25 mm

    Leprosy in Brazil: an analysis of the Global Burden of Disease estimates between 1990 and 2019

    Objective: To analyze the occurrence of leprosy in Brazil and its states between 1990 and 2019, according to Global Burden of Disease (GBD) estimates, and its correlation with development status. Study design: A descriptive and analytical ecological epidemiological study. Methods: Rates of incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability (YLD) due to leprosy, standardized by age, per 100,000 inhabitants, were analyzed. The trend analysis consisted of the joinpoint regression model and the average annual percentage change. The correlation between the incidence rate and the sociodemographic index (SDI) was investigated (Spearman test) at a 5% significance level. Incidence, prevalence and YLD rates were presented by country's states, sex, and age. Results: There was an average percentage decrease of −1.1% per year (P < 0.001) in the incidence rate in the country and, between 1990 and 2019, a decline from 4.8 to 3.5 per 100,000 inhabitants; prevalence from 26.1 to 22.2, and YLD from 1.1 to 1.0. The incidence rate was higher among men and the elderly. Maranhão (7.0 in 1990; 4.2 in 2019), Alagoas (6.6 in 1990; 4.1 in 2019), Acre (6.1 in 1990; 4.0 in 2019), Mato Grosso (5.2 in 1990 and 3.7 in 2019), and Mato Grosso do Sul (4.8 in 1990 and 3.7 in 2019) presented the highest incidence rates. A negative correlation was observed between SDI levels and leprosy incidence rates in 1990 (R = −0.71; P < 0.0001) and 2019 (R = −0.81; P < 0.0001). Conclusions: Despite the decrease in the rates of leprosy incidence, prevalence, and YLDs over the analyzed period, Brazil has a long way towards achieving its eradication. The greater burden of the disease in males stands out. The estimated risk of the disease was higher in the states with the lowest SDI levels. Therefore, interventions must consider the heterogeneity of the disease burden geographically and between sociodemographic groups

    Absence of Fas-L aggravates renal injury in acute Trypanosoma cruzi infection

    Trypanosoma cruzi infection induces diverse alterations in immunocompetent cells and organs, myocarditis and congestive heart failure. However, the physiological network of disturbances imposed by the infection has not been addressed thoroughly. Regarding myocarditis induced by the infection, we observed in our previous work that Fas-L-/- mice (gld/gld) have very mild inflammatory infiltration when compared to BALB/c mice. However, all mice from both lineages die in the early acute phase. Therefore, in this work we studied the physiological connection relating arterial pressure, renal function/damage and cardiac insufficiency as causes of death. Our results show that a broader set of dysfunctions that could be classified as a cardio/anaemic/renal syndrome is more likely responsible for cardiac failure and death in both lineages.     Spatial and temporal dynamics of fucoid populations (Ascophyllum nodosum and Fucus serratus): A comparison between central and range edge populations

    Persistence of populations at range edges relies on local population dynamics and fitness, in the case of geographically isolated populations of species with low dispersal potential. Focusing on spatial variations in demography helps to predict the long-term capability for persistence of populations across the geographical range of species' distribution. The demography of two ecological and phylogenetically close macroalgal species with different life history characteristics was investigated by using stochastic, stage-based matrix models. Populations of Ascophyllum nodosum and Fucus serratus were sampled for up to 4 years at central locations in France and at their southern range limits in Portugal. The stochastic population growth rate (lambda(s)) of A. nodosum was lower and more variable in central than in southern sites whilst for F. serratus this trend was reversed with lambda(s) much lower and more variable in southern than in central populations. Individuals were larger in central than in southern populations for both species, which was reflected in the lower transition probabilities of individuals to larger size classes and higher probability of shrinkage in the southern populations. In both central and southern populations elasticity analysis (proportional sensitivity) of population growth rate showed that fertility elements had a small contribution to lambda(s) that was more sensitive to changes in matrix transitions corresponding to survival. The highest elasticities were found for loop transitions in A. nodosum and for growth to larger size classes in F. serratus. Sensitivity analysis showed high selective pressure on individual growth for both species at both locations. The results of this study highlight the deterministic role of species-specific life-history traits in population demography across the geographical range of species.
