This work describes the main characteristics of an inflation targeting regime and derives the optimal solution for interest rates according to an original methodology for two models based on the Phillips and IS curves containing general exogenous variables and a complete loss-function.

Numerical modeling of the wind flow over a transverse dune

    Get PDF
Transverse dunes, which form under unidirectional winds and have fixed profile in the direction perpendicular to the wind, occur on all celestial objects of our solar system where dunes have been detected. Here we perform a numerical study of the average turbulent wind flow over a transverse dune by means of computational fluid dynamics simulations. We find that the length of the zone of recirculating flow at the dune lee --- the {\em{separation bubble}} --- displays a surprisingly strong dependence on the wind shear velocity, uu_{\ast}: it is nearly independent of uu_{\ast} for shear velocities within the range between 0.20.2\,ms and $0.8\,$ms but increases linearly with uu_{\ast} for larger shear velocities. Our calculations show that transport in the direction opposite to dune migration within the separation bubble can be sustained if uu_{\ast} is larger than approximately 0.390.39\,ms, whereas a larger value of $u_{\ast}$ (about $0.49\,$ms) is required to initiate this reverse transport.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure

Sustainability of small reservoirs and large scale water availability under current conditions and climate change

    Get PDF
Semi-arid river basins often rely on reservoirs for water supply. Small reservoirs may impact on large-scale water availability both by enhancing availability in a distributed sense and by subtracting water for large downstream user communities, e.g. served by large reservoirs. Both of these impacts of small reservoirs are subject to climate change. Using a case-study on North-East Brazil, this paper shows that climate change impacts on water availability may be severe, and impacts on distributed water availability from small reservoirs may exceed impacts on centralised water availability from large reservoirs. Next, the paper shows that the effect of small reservoirs on water availability from large reservoirs may be significant, and increase both in relative and absolute sense under unfavourable climate change

How dense can one pack spheres of arbitrary size distribution?

We present the first systematic algorithm to estimate the maximum packing density of spheres when the grain sizes are drawn from an arbitrary size distribution. With an Apollonian filling rule, we implement our technique for disks in 2d and spheres in 3d. As expected, the densest packing is achieved with power-law size distributions. We also test the method on homogeneous and on empirical real distributions, and we propose a scheme to obtain experimentally accessible distributions of grain sizes with low porosity. Our method should be helpful in the development of ultra-strong ceramics and high performance concrete.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

Minhota breed cattle: Carcass characterisation and meat quality affected by sex and slaughter age

7 páginas, 2 tablasThis work focuses on the effect of slaughter age (6 and 9 months) and sex on carcass characteristics and meat quality of the Minhota cattle breed. In this study, data from 52 cattle (34 entire males and 18 females) were used for the carcass and meat characterisation. Regarding carcass characteristics, entire male carcasses (158 kg and 223 kg for animals of 6 and 9 months, respectively), were heavier than female carcasses (130 kg and 161 kg for animals of 6 and 9 months, respectively), with better dressing percentages, increased lengths, thicknesses and depths and compactness indexes. The quality of meat from carcasses of both entire males and females had strong luminosity (L*), a pale pink tone (lower a*-value) and high yellowness. Mean tenderness of Longissimus thoracis, expressed as shear force, was below 5.5 kg/cm2, without significant differences (P > 0.05) between either the slaughter age or sexPeer reviewe

This paper presents a hydroinformatic platform specifically designed for a Portuguese north-western river basin (river Cávado) in order to define, simulate and analyze hydrodynamics and water quality management scenarios. The software solution was designed to be operated in a web environment, taking advantage of the integration capabilities of this software environment and the user friendliness of web interfaces
