How high school training for work in blue-collar communities helps manufacture workplace gender inequality.

    Get PDF
In states in the Rust Belt and the Southeast, many high schools emphasize courses related to local blue-collar work in order to better prepare students for careers in local industries. In new research, April Sutton, Amanda Bosky and Chandra Muller find that such emphases are often at the expense of college-preparation courses, which in turn has a knock-on effect for female employment rates. Women who are raised in blue-collar communities, and thus who missed out on college preparation courses, face a much bigger wage gap than those who attended high-school elsewhere

Video Education on Fever to Empower and Educate Caregivers

    Get PDF
Nursing research and evidence-based practice are an essential part of the nursing profession. This paper includes discussion of the evidence to support an evidence-based benchmark project using a video to educate caregivers on how to care for a child experiencing a fever and an overview of the proposed project process. Fever has been shown to cause parental anxiety, and caregivers tend to seek medical help due to lack of education on how to care for a child with a fever (Bertille et al., 2018; Gunduz et al., 2016). The following PICOT question is the foundation of the proposed benchmark project: in parents of children seen in a pediatric emergency room with a chief complaint of fever (P), how does parental education using a video on management of fever in children (I) compared to no video education about fever management (C) affect parent’s knowledge of fever and its management (O) over 3 months (T)? This benchmark project looks at the use of a five-minute educational video on fever and its management to supplement standard verbal and written instructions given at discharge. The goal of the project is to increase knowledge on how to care for children experiencing a febrile illness. Increased knowledge will be determined by looking at pretest and post test scores between the groups. By increasing knowledge, we can decrease parental fear and anxiety related to fevers which has the potential to decrease unnecessary hospital visits in the future

Group cohesiveness is the degree to which a group wants to always survive and retain its members, or it can be interpreted as a measure of how attractive the group is to individuals, as a sense of responsibility and pleasure with its members in the group. One of the factors that can affect group cohesiveness is conformity. This research was conducted with the aim of knowing whether there is a relationship between conformity and group cohesiveness among members of the CB motorbike community at Pesanggrahan. The method used in this research is a correlational quantitative research method. The subjects used in this study were 150 members of the Motor City Bike Community in Pasanggrahan. Measuring tools used are conformity scale and group cohesiveness scale. The research data were analyzed using the product moment correlation test with the help of the IBS SPSS 24.0 for window computer program. The results of data analysis calculations show a correlation coefficient of 0.696 with a significant value of 0.00 (p <0.05), which means that there is a very significant positive correlation between conformity and cohesiveness in members of the motor city bike community. Sex Determination and the Human Person

    Get PDF
Abstract: For many species that reproduce sexually, how sex is expressed at different points across lifespan is highly contingent and dependent on various environmental factors. For example, in many species of fish, environmental cues can trigger a natural process of sex transition where a female transitions to male. For many species of turtle, incubation temperature influences the likelihood that turtle eggs will hatch males or females. What is the case for Homo sapiens? Is human sex expression influenced by contingent environmental factors like we see in fish and turtles, with whom we share common ancestry and DNA? Our paper explores the current biological science of sex determination and how it applies to philosophical and theological accounts of the human person. We argue that while human sex determination is not susceptible to environmental cues to the same degree we see in other species, there is sufficient variability among the pathways of human sex development to complicate simplistic biological categories of male and female

Self-Efficacy dan Dukungan Sosial dengan Quarter Life Crisis pada Karyawan

Each individual will be faced with personal questions such as jobs, salaries, positions and so on. Situations like these can affect individuals. Comparing other people's achievements, worrying about the future and feeling worried. If this happens at the age of 20-30 years it is called a quarter life crisis. This study aims to determine the relationship between self-efficacy and social support with quarter life crisis among employees at PT.X. This research is a quantitative study with a population of 277 employees using simple random sampling techniques so that this study involved 164 employees aged 20-30 years. Data collection uses 3 scales, namely the self-efficacy scale, social support scale and quarter life crisis scale. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 16.0 for windows with multiple regression analysis techniques. The results of the analysis show that the value of self-efficacy has a negative correlation of -0.668 with sig. 0.000 (<0.05) and the value of social support has a negative correlation of -0.469 with sig. 0.000 (<0.05). This shows that the higher the value of self-efficacy and social support, the lower the value of quarter life crisis, and vice versa.

Moving from Binders to Bytes: Processing, Digitizing, and Publishing a Paper-Based Archive to an Institutional Repository

    Get PDF
At San Jose State University, a paper-based archive centering on library and information science history is being processed, organized, and uploaded onto ScholarWorks, the campus institutional repository. Prior to its digitization, the presenters grappled with many questions. What platform should be used to house the archive? What entry points would researchers expect in order to access the collection? What research purposes would this collection satisfy? The presenters will discuss their rationale for their decision-making in transferring 300 binders to an open access, digital format. Among the individuals who are involved in making this detail-rich collection openly accessible online and searchable are a scholarly communications librarian, a cataloging and metadata specialist who is serving as the interim institutional repository coordinator, and a library and information science graduate student focusing on archival records and management. These individuals will discuss their varying perspectives and how each of their emphases contributes to the enterprise of making this paper-based archive discoverable, searchable, and digitally accessible in an ever-evolving institutional repository and scholarly communications environment

Effects of physical activity calorie equivalent food labelling to reduce food selection and consumption: systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled studies

    Get PDF
Background: There is limited evidence that nutritional labelling on food/drinks is changing eating behaviours. Physical activity calorie equivalent (PACE) food labelling aims to provide the public with information about the amount of physical activity required to expend the number of kilocalories in food/drinks (eg, calories in this pizza requires 45 min of running to burn), to encourage healthier food choices and reduce disease. Objective: We aimed to systematically search for randomised controlled trials and experimental studies of the effects of PACE food labelling on the selection, purchase or consumption of food/drinks. Methods: PACE food labelling was compared with any other type of food labelling or no labelling (comparator). Reports were identified by searching electronic databases, websites and social media platforms. Inverse variance meta-analysis was used to summarise evidence. Weighted mean differences (WMD) and 95% CIs were used to describe between-group differences using a random effects model. Results: 15 studies were eligible for inclusion. When PACE labelling was displayed on food/drinks and menus, significantly fewer calories were selected, relative to comparator labelling (WMD=-64.9 kcal, 95% CI -103.2 to -26.6, p=0.009, n=4606). Presenting participants with PACE food labelling results in the consumption of significantly fewer calories (WMD=-80.4 kcal, 95% CI-136.7 to -24.2, p=0.005, n=486) relative to comparator food labelling. Conclusion: Based on current evidence PACE food labelling may reduce the number of kilocalories selected from menus and decrease the number of kilocalories/grams of food consumed by the public, compared with other types of food labelling/no labelling. Re-thinking Personal Narrative in the Pedagogy of Writing Teacher Preparation

    Get PDF
How can teacher educators mobilize contemporary understandings of personal narrative -- as socially and dialogically shaped in the context of culture and as instrumental to sociocultural processes of self-authoring -- in the teaching of narrative writing and, more specifically, in the work of teaching teachers to teach narrative writing? Rarely do teachers teach strategies that might result in good narratives. Rarely do narrative texts written in school (or any other kinds of texts written in school, for that matter) actually go anywhere beyond the teacher, thus failing to offer students experience in negotiating meanings with readers, working out the versions of self in context that narrative writing can foster. Teaching personal narrative well, in ways that are consistent with a social and dialogic view of personal narrative’s value and the identity work it can support, has proven challenging. This essay describes and reflects on one effort to do so in a teacher education setting. We introduce the example of a class-to-class partnership between teacher candidates and first-year college writers not as a success story or an exemplar, but rather as a problematic case to stimulate conversation about the challenges of narrative writing teacher preparation
