    Vocabulário Karipuna - Pano esboço de tabela fonética a partir de dados de Martius (1863) e Faria (1927)

    Este trabalho possui dois objetivos iniciais: apresentar dados para estabelecer a hipótese que os dados obtidos de Martius (1863) e Faria (1927) são de um Karipuna da família linguística Pano; e, também, objetiva reconstruir uma proposta fonética preliminar do Karipuna Pano. As fontes linguísticas utilizadas são: Martius (1863) e Faria (1927). As fontes históricas e propostas de classificação foram: Noronha (1768), Keller (1874), Cardus (1886) e Manson (1950). A partir disso, montou-se uma tabela com dados de cognatos, acrescentados uma coluna de léxico Huni Kuĩ (Kaxinawá) e Kaxarari (os dois da família linguística Pano), com dados de nossa pesquisa. Como resultado preliminar, nossa hipótese é de que os dados do Karipuna em Martius e em Faria pertencem a um Karipuna da família linguística Pano. Assim, chegamos a uma tabela fonética preliminar do Karipuna Pano: [p, b, m, t, n, k, ɲ, h, ɾ, s, ʃ~tʃ, ʂ, w, j] e [i, a, ɨ, u]

    Limping following limb loss increases locomotor stability

    Although many arthropods have the ability to voluntarily lose limbs, how these animals rapidly adapt to such an extreme perturbation remains poorly understood. It is thought that moving with certain gaits can enable efficient, stable locomotion; however, switching gaits requires complex information flow between and coordination of an animal's limbs. We show here that upon losing two legs, spiders can switch to a novel, more statically stable gait, or use temporal adjustments without a gait change. The resulting gaits have higher overall static stability than the gaits that would be imposed by limb loss. By decreasing the time spent in a low-stability configuration—effectively “limping” over less stable phases of the stride—spiders increased the overall stability of the less statically-stable gait with no observable reduction in speed, as compared to the intact condition. Our results shed light on how voluntary limb loss could have persisted evolutionarily among many animals, and provide bioinspired solutions for robots when they break or lose limbs

    Evolution of regulatory signatures in primate cortical neurons at cell-type resolution

    The human cerebral cortex contains many cell types that likely underwent independent functional changes during evolution. However, cell-type-specific regulatory landscapes in the cortex remain largely unexplored. Here we report epigenomic and transcriptomic analyses of the two main cortical neuronal subtypes, glutamatergic projection neurons and GABAergic interneurons, in human, chimpanzee, and rhesus macaque. Using genome-wide profiling of the H3K27ac histone modification, we identify neuron-subtype-specific regulatory elements that previously went undetected in bulk brain tissue samples. Human-specific regulatory changes are uncovered in multiple genes, including those associated with language, autism spectrum disorder, and drug addiction. We observe preferential evolutionary divergence in neuron subtype-specific regulatory elements and show that a substantial fraction of pan-neuronal regulatory elements undergoes subtype-specific evolutionary changes. This study sheds light on the interplay between regulatory evolution and cell-type-dependent gene-expression programs, and provides a resource for further exploration of human brain evolution and function
