Standardization and optimization of an automotive components production line

Supported by the concepts and definitions of Standard Work methodology, which underpins Lean Thinking philosophy and Kaizen, the study described in this article was developed at a company in the automotive sector, more specifically directed at a production line manufacturing components for air-conditioning systems. The main objectives were to standardize operations, decrease or eliminate the number of activities those are not generating added-value, enhance productivity and associate continuous improvement actions to the processes at hand in order to eliminate waste. After the implementation of a few simple changes - the standardization of operations, adjustments and allocations of workstations – one was able to tailor the production objectives and cycle times to the line’s capacity. The productivity and efficiency of both machines and workers was also increased. Due to the elimination of waste and generation of value, from the customer’s perspective, one was able to raise the OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) general average by 16%, from 70% to 86%.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Implementing autonomous maintenance in an automotive components manufacturer

The automotive sector constitutes one of the most demanding activities in the global market, since it requires a constant increase in productivity, both in the automobile industry as well as in the companies whose manufacture its components. This sector is currently set within an economic framework where there is a relentless search for costs reduction and an increase in productivity with minimal investment. In order to meet these requirements, companies have sought to optimise their products and processes to ensure higher profits. This study was developed with the purpose of enhancing procedures in the maintenance sector regarding a company which supplies air-conditioning tubes to the automotive sector. The main objective was to increase its machines and equipment availability through the implementation of autonomous maintenance. Due to the undertaken improvements, there was a 10% increase in the monthly indicator of equipment availability on line AA3 at the company where the study was carried out. This, in turn, resulted in an increase of 8% in OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) during the same time period, which was chiefly due to a reduction both in machine breakdown rates, as well as in the MTTR (Mean Time To Repair) on the same line.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Edaphic fauna in soil profile after three decades of different soil management and cover crops in a subtropical region

Abstract This research evaluated the effects of long-term (30 years) winter cover crops under conventional farming system and no-tillage system on edaphic fauna in a Rhodic Hapludox soil, from Paraná State, Brazil. We used three winter cover crops (black oat, hairy vetch and fallow), and as a reference a fragment of natural forest. Soil monoliths were collected at two times, one during the flowering of maize (April 2013) and the other during the flowering of soybean (January 2014). The extraction of the monoliths was carried out in three layers in the soil profile (0-10, 10-20 and 20-30 cm). Seventeen taxonomic groups were sampled. The density of the edaphic fauna is inversely related to soil depth. The winter crops associated with the no-tillage system in long-term resulted in fauna densities similar to the natural environment, with a higher density (density increase of 2.2x) at a depth of 10-20 cm in areas with black oat. At 0-10 cm depth, black oat and vetch under no-tillage systems resulted in an increase of 62% and 69% (April 2013) and 46 and 44% (January 2014), respectively, in the density of soil fauna, when compared to the same winter crops in conventional farming system

Studies on the mineral nutrition of the rice plant: XII. effects of the deficiencies of macronutrients on the varieties IAC-25 and IAC-47

Rice plants, varieties IAC-25 and IAC-47 were grown in nutrient solution both in the presence and in the absence of macronutrients. Symptons of deficiency were observed in general agreement with description found in the literature. The deficiency of N affected most dry matter yield among the three major macronutrients. although the effect on grain production was greater when K was omitted. The following levels could be taken as indication of adequate nutrition when leaf samples are analysed at the boot stage (respectively) for var. IAC-25 and IAC-47): N - 4.18% and 3.54%; P - 0.36 and 0.27; K - 2.30 and 2.09; Ca - 1.22 and 1.00; Mg - 0.80 and 0.77; S - 0.24 and 0.18. Leaf nitrate reductase activity at the same physiological period correlated well both with N supply and dry matter production

Estudos sobre a nutrição mineral do arroz: XIII. efeitos das deficiências de micronutrientes nas variedades IAC-25 e IAC-47

Rice plants were grown in nutrient solution lither in the presence or in the absence of B, Cu and Zn. The symptoms of deficiency were usually in agreement with those described in the literature. Growth of the variety IAC-47 (number of leaves, tillering and total dry matter) was relatively more affected; this variety, however did produce grains under the minus Cu treatment (one fourth of the yield observed in the "complete" treatment), which did not happen in the case of the other variety. At the beginning of the grain filling period the following leaf contents could be considered as indication of deficiency: B-13 to 25 ppm; Zn-20 ppm; no conclusion could be drawn with respect to Cu levels.
