Use of pseudo-harmonics method coupled with finite differences coarse mesh in the solution of fixed source problems
A method based in the pseudo-harmonics method was developed to solve the fixed source problem. The pseudo-harmonics method is based on the eigenfunctions associated with the leakage and removal matrix operator of the neutron diffusion equation, which will be treated here in three dimensions and two groups of energy. This matrix is built in this work through the nodal discretization supplied by coarse mesh finite differences method (CMFDM). CMFDM has as input data the average currents and the average fluxes in the faces of the node, and the average flux in the node, previously obtained by the nodal expansion method. The results obtained with the pseudo-harmonics procedure show good accuracy when compared to the reference results of the source problem tested. Moreover, it is a method which can be easily implemented to solve this type of problems
In Vitro Acute Exposure to DEHP Affects Oocyte Meiotic Maturation, Energy and Oxidative Stress Parameters in a Large Animal Model
Phthalates are ubiquitous environmental contaminants because of their use in plastics and other common consumer products. Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is the most abundant phthalate and it impairs fertility by acting as an endocrine disruptor. The aim of the present study was to analyze the effects of in vitro acute exposure to DEHP on oocyte maturation, energy and oxidative status in the horse, a large animal model. Cumulus cell (CC) apoptosis and oxidative status were also investigated. Cumulus-oocyte complexes from the ovaries of slaughtered mares were cultured in vitro in presence of 0.12, 12 and 1200 µM DEHP. After in vitro maturation (IVM), CCs were removed and evaluated for apoptosis (cytological assessment and TUNEL) and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. Oocytes were evaluated for nuclear chromatin configuration. Matured (Metaphase II stage; MII) oocytes were further evaluated for cytoplasmic energy and oxidative parameters. DEHP significantly inhibited oocyte maturation when added at low doses (0.12 µM; P<0.05). This effect was related to increased CC apoptosis (P<0.001) and reduced ROS levels (P<0.0001). At higher doses (12 and 1200 µM), DEHP induced apoptosis (P<0.0001) and ROS increase (P<0.0001) in CCs without affecting oocyte maturation. In DEHP-exposed MII oocytes, mitochondrial distribution patterns, apparent energy status (MitoTracker fluorescence intensity), intracellular ROS localization and levels, mt/ROS colocalization and total SOD activity did not vary, whereas increased ATP content (P<0.05), possibly of glycolytic origin, was found. Co-treatment with N-Acetyl-Cysteine reversed apoptosis and efficiently scavenged excessive ROS in DEHP-treated CCs without enhancing oocyte maturation. In conclusion, acute in vitro exposure to DEHP inhibits equine oocyte maturation without altering ooplasmic energy and oxidative stress parameters in matured oocytes which retain the potential to be fertilized and develop into embryos even though further studies are necessary to confirm this possibility
Estimative of reference flows for water resources planning and control: hydrologic regional indicators application
Due to limitations of hydrometeorological monitoring network related to spatial station distribution and extension of historical series, tools that aim to improve consistency and optimize available data analysis have become essential. In this context, regionalization techniques stand out, once the main focus is the delimitation of hydrologically homogeneous regions with the subsequent spatial transposition of hydrological variables of interest. Regional indicators, defined as the mean values of hydrological variables and characteristics of a homogeneous region, constitute an expeditious approach to hydrological regionalization. The main perspective of the study was to evaluate the use of regional indicators when quantifying reference flows associated with average flow, drought, or flood conditions. The study area selected was the Manhuaçu River basin, a major Doce River tributary, located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The results showed that the regional indicators allow estimates of diverse reference flows with mean errors lower than 30%, considered satisfactory for the study area. However, the conventional method of flow regionalization presented more consistent results, with mean errors usually lower than 20%, regardless of the reference flow analyzed. It was also observed that adopting historical flow series with varied extensions did not produce relevant differences when appropriating the diverse reference flows for the Manhuaçu River basin, with none exceeding 3%.Em função das limitações da rede de monitoramento hidrometeorológico, tanto do ponto de vista da distribuição espacial quanto da extensão das séries históricas, ferramentas que busquem dar consistência e otimizar a análises dos dados disponÃveis vêm ganhando espaço.
Effects of sewage sludge application on unfertile tropical soils evaluated by multiple approaches:A field experiment in a commercial Eucalyptus plantation
Sewage sludge (SS) reuse in forest plantation as soil fertilizer/amendment has tremendously increased in recent years. However, SS may have high concentrations of potentially toxic elements (PTE), representing a potential risk for soil and the whole ecosystem. This paper was aimed to assess the toxicity of PTE in unfertile tropical soils amended with SS in a commercial Eucalyptus plantation, with an integrated multiple approaches combining: i) the use of a battery of bioassays (Daphnia magna, Pseudokcrichirella subcapitata, Lactuca sativa, and Allium cepa); and ii) the evaluation of some PTE (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) and their availability into the pedoenvironment. Differences in total and available PTE between SS doses and time of treatments were evaluated using ANOVA; correlations between PTE and bioassays by a sparse partial robust M-regression (SPRM), while multiple correlations among parameters were performed by principal factor analysis (PFA). Results show that PTE contents in soils tended to increase with SS application doses. However this cannot be assumed as a general rule since in all the investigated treatments the PTE concentrations were consistently below both soil natural background concentrations and quality reference values. Bioassays showed a generalized low eco- and genotoxicity of SS with an increase in toxicity at increasing SS doses but with a clear decreasing trend as time went by. A. cepa was the most sensitive bioassay followed by P. subcapitata > D. magna > L. sativa. Overall, the results indicate that in realistic open field conditions SS risk may be lower than expected due to dynamic decrease in PTE toxicity with time after application. This study has an important implication that open-field trials should be strongly encouraged for evaluating environmental risk of SS application in forestry. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Acretismo placentário – sinais de suspeição na avaliação ecográfica pré-natal de rotina / Placental accretism - signals of suspection in prenatal echographic evaluation of routine
