    Beeswax: A minireview of its antimicrobial activity and its application in medicine

    Abstract Beeswax is the substance that forms the structure of a honeycomb; the bees secrete wax to build the honeycombs where to store honey. Thanks to its rich hydrophobic protective properties, the beeswax is in fact present within cosmetics and body products. Also, beeswax is used in the food industry: as a film to wrap cheese for maturing or as a food additive (E901) to give shine to the products. Exactly as the honey which it contains, beeswax is also characterized by several therapeutic properties of great interest to us; it is thought to be particularly effective in healing bruises, inflammation and burns. Recently, the interest of researchers has moved even on antimicrobial properties of beeswax although there are still few studies in the literature focused only on the action of beeswax. The few studies showed an antimicrobic effectiveness of beeswax against overall Staphylococcus aureus , Salmonella enterica , Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger ; these inhibitory effects are enhanced synergistically with other natural products such as honey or olive oil. This minireview aims to be a collection of major scientific works that have considered the antimicrobial activity of beeswax alone or in combination with other natural products in recent years

    Royal Jelly: An ancient remedy with remarkable antibacterial properties

    Royal Jelly (RJ), a honeybee hypopharyngeal gland secretion of young nurse and an exclusive nourishment for bee queen, has been used since ancient times for care and human health and it is still very important in traditional and folkloristic medicine, especially in Asia within the apitherapy. Recently, RJ and its protein and lipid components have been subjected to several investigations on their antimicrobial activity due to extensive traditional uses and for a future application in medicine. Antimicrobial activities of crude Royal Jelly, Royalisin, 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid, Jelleines, Major Royal Jelly Proteins against different bacteria have been reported. All these beehive products showed antimicrobial activities that lead their potential employment in several fields as natural additives. RJ and its derived compounds show a highest activity especially against Gram positive bacteria. The purpose of this Review is to summarize the results of antimicrobial studies of Royal Jelly following the timescale of the researches. From the first scientific applications to the isolation of the single components in order to better understand its application in the past years and propose an employment in future studies as a natural antimicrobial agent

    Effect of api-bioxal® and apiherb® treatments against Nosema ceranae infection in Apis mellifera investigated by two qPCR methods

    Nosema ceranae is a worldwide distributed midgut parasite of western honey bees, leading to dwindling colonies and their collapse. As a treatment, only fumagillin is available, causing issues like resistance and hampered bee physiology. This study aimed to evaluate ApiHerb® and Api-Bioxal® as treatments against N. ceranae. The efficacy was tested using two qPCR methods based on the 16S rRNA and Hsp70 genes. In addition, these methods were compared for their aptitude for the quantification of the infection. For this, 19 colonies were selected based on the presence of N. ceranae infections. The colonies were divided into three groups: treated with ApiHerb, Api-Bioxal with previous queen caging and an untreated control. All colonies were sampled pre- and post-treatment. The bees were analyzed individually and in duplicate with both qPCR methods. All bees in the pre-treatment tested positive for N. ceranae. Both treatments reduced the abundance of N. ceranae, but ApiHerb also decreased the prevalence of infected bees. Analysis with the 16S rRNA method resulted in several orders of magnitude more copies than analysis with the Hsp70 method. We conclude that both products are suitable candidates for N. ceranae treatment. From our analysis, the qPCR method based on the Hsp70 gene results as more apt for the exact quantification of N. ceranae as is needed for the development of veterinary medicinal products

    Effect of the replacement of the o-methoxyphenyl moiety with nitrogen-containing aromatic rings within N-phenyl-piperazine and phenoxy-ethylamine-based 1,3-dioxo/oxathio/dithiolanes as α1 and 5-HT1A receptor ligands

    In the present work, nineteen analogues of 1-[(2,2-Diphenyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl)methyl]-4-(2-methoxyphenyl)piperazine 5 and N-[2-(2-Methoxyphenoxy)ethyl]-2,2-diphenyl-1,3-dioxolane-4-methanamine 18 were synthesized. The compounds were tested for binding affinity at 5-HT1AR and α1-AR subtypes. They were also tested using functional assays as α1-AR antagonists and the most promising were tested for functional activity at 5-HT1AR, where they were shown to behave as agonists. The results highlight that the replacement of the 1,3-dioxolane ring with a 1,3-oxathiolane or a 1,3-dithiolane moiety leads to an overall reduction in in-vitro affinity at the α1-AR, while affinity, potency and efficacy were strongly enhanced at the 5-HT1A receptor. Overall, the nitrogen-containing aromatic moieties scarcely affect the affinity at the 5-HT1A receptor, while reducing potency and increasing efficacy. The oxidation of the sulphur atom in the 1,3-oxathiolane to give sulfoxides and solfones has a negative effect on affinity and potency at both receptor systems. Regardless of the effect on the other parameters, selectivity toward 5-HT1AR with respect to the α1-AR is often favoured, but never the contrary. The most striking result is the inversion of selectivity. In fact, while the lead 5 is 100-fold selective for α1-AR, the new derivatives, although to differing degrees, are selective for 5-HT1AR

    El consumo de drogas es uno de los principales problemas de salud pública al que se enfrentan las sociedades actuales. Durante varias décadas se ha generado un amplio grupo de trabajos científicos, desde la perspectiva de las neurociencias, que han logrado esclarecer variables importantes implicadas en el proceso de adicción y en los de mantenimiento y recaída. Se ha encontrado la implicación directa de circuitos neurales como el mesolímbico-esocortical o la participación activa de sistemas de neurotransmisores como los dopaminérgicos y los glutamatérgicos. Además, se han esclarecido los sustratos conductuales de la adicción mediante técnicas procedentes de la Psicología del Aprendizaje, lo cual ha sido de gran utilidad a la hora de evaluar los componentes de este comportamiento complejo. En este artículo se hará una revisión de estos hallazgos destacando la importancia del estudio conjunto de las bases neuroquímicas y neuroanatómicas junto con los procesos conductuales

    Counterpublics on YouTube: The case of trans communities

    The accessibility and democratization of online media has allowed voices to emerge around issues with low visibility. In this study we are looking at the trans community. Whereas publics are generated in mainstream media, counterpublics emerge from the margins, generating alternative spaces for debate and discussion. YouTube has emerged as a space for collaborative learning and participation, breaking the boundaries between public/private and collective/personal. Taking Elsa Ruiz Cómica and Alejandro P. E.’s YouTube channels as a case study, we intend to understand how their respective counter-publics are configured, and to analyze their strategies of technological appropriation and activism. Thanks to the debate generated by their videos, these trans youtubers manage to transfer innovative concepts to a wider audience, contributing to the recognition of diverse (sexual) identities, and to the questioning of gender binarism

    Conservation status of Apis mellifera ruttneri inferred from whole genome sequences

    Apis mellifera ruttneri is the native honey bee subspecies from the Maltese islands (Malta, Comino and Gozo). This African-lineage subspecies is adapted to the harsh environmental conditions and to the limited forage season of these islands. For many years, it was considered highly hybridized, due to the large and sustained importation of foreign subspecies, especially A. m. ligustica, perceived by many beekeepers as superior or for commercial reasons. Recent studies based on morphometry and mitochondrial DNA have suggested the occurrence of A. m. ruttneri, particularly in the main island. Conservation initiatives and a breeding program have been developed, but to date its conservation status is not fully known. As part of the MEDIBEES project, here, over 50 A. m. ruttneri georeferenced colonies collected from across Malta, as well as 50 several reference subspecies (A. m. ligustica, A. m. siciliana, A. m. iberiensis, A. m. sahariensis, and A. m. intermissa) were whole genome sequenced. The population structure and admixture were assessed from genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms using model and distance based-methods. The results show varying levels of admixture proportions of A. m. ruttneri with C-lineage honey bees across Malta but also a shared ancestry with the honey bees of north Africa, consistent with the putative natural colonization from Africa in ancient times.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    MEDIBEES: Monitoring the Mediterranean honey bee subspecies and their resilience to climate change for the improvement of sustainable agro-ecosystems

    Beekeeping provides livelihood for hundreds of thousands of beekeepers in the Mediterranean area. This activity relies on a number of different indigenous Apis mellifera subspecies, adapted to the very diverse and harsh conditions of the region. Climate change is expected to increase the stress factors affecting bees, especially in this region, reducing both pollination efficiency and production potential. Unfortunately, our ability to address this problem is limited by the incomplete knowledge of the natural adaptation mechanisms developed by the different subspecies. In order to increase the knowledge base for future selection programs to improve bee populations for environmental changes, the MEDIBEES project is being developed. It includes 9 partners from 8 Mediterranean countries on all three shores of the Mediterranean, covering 10 local A. mellifera subspecies, which represents a remarkable though understudied proportion of the species genetic diversity. The project aims to: a) unravel the differential genetic background of Mediterranean subspecies, b) understand their adaptation to local conditions, and c) characterize their resistance to climate change. To achieve the objectives, colonies belonging to the local subspecies will be studied phenotypically to determine their behavior under environmental conditions, covering survival, sensitivity to pests/pathogens, behavior, physiology and reproduction which will be completed by gene expression and transcriptomic assays. In addition, complete genomes of field and laboratory samples will be sequenced to find genes putatively involved in adaptation and to develop new genetic tools to characterize honey bee populations according to their resistance to environmental stress factors. This effort will encourage the use of local subspecies, to make them more attractive and avoid importing foreign breeds, and will lay the foundation for future selection programs. Besides, the valorization of honey by both promoting its use and developing quality labels, and the evaluation of beekeeping by-products as modifiers of soil fertility and biota are also approached to help the beekeepers improve the sustainability of their farms in an economical and environmental sound manner.Medibees part of the PRIMA programme supported by the European Unioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
