    On the Superradiance of Spin-1 Waves in an Equatorial Wedge around a Kerr Hole

    Recently Van Putten has suggested that superradiance of magnetosonic waves in a toroidal magnetosphere around a Kerr black hole may play a role in the central engine of gamma-ray bursts. In this context, he computed (in the WKB approximation) the superradiant amplification of scalar waves confined to a thin equatorial wedge around a Kerr hole and found that the superradiance is higher than for radiation incident over all angles. This paper presents calculations of both spin-0 (scalar) superradiance (integrating the radial equation rather than using the WKB method) and and spin-1 (electromagnetic/magnetosonic) superradiance, in Van Putten's wedge geometry. In contrast to the scalar case, spin-1 superradiance decreases in the wedge geometry, decreasing the likelihood of its astrophysical importance.Comment: Submitted to The Astrophysical Journal Letter

    In the past year we made significant progress in improving our fundamental understanding of the physics of particle-gas dynamics in the protoplanetary nebula. Having brought our code to a state of fairly robust functionality, we devoted significant effort to optimizing it for running long cases. We optimized the code for vectorization to the extent that it now runs eight times faster than before. The following subject areas are covered: physical improvements to the model; numerical results; Reynolds averaging of fluid equations; and modeling of turbulence and viscosity

    Effectiveness of commercial harvesting in controlling feral-pig populations

    Context. The feral pig (Sus scrofa) is a widespread pest species in Australia and its populations are commonly controlled to reduce damage to agriculture and the environment. Feral pigs are also a resource and harvested for commercial export as game meat. Although many other control techniques are used, commercial harvesting of feral pigs is often encouraged by land managers, because it carries little or no cost and is widely perceived to control populations. Aims. To use feral-pig harvesting records, density data and simple harvest models to examine the effectiveness of commercial harvesting to reduce feral-pig populations. Methods. The present study examined commercial harvest off-take on six sites (246-657 km2) in southern Queensland, and 20 large blocks (~2-6000 km2) throughout Queensland. The harvest off-take for each site was divided by monthly or average annual population size, determined by aerial survey, to calculate monthly and annual harvest rates.Asimple harvest model assuming logistic population growth was used to determine the likely effectiveness of harvesting. Key results. Commercial harvest rates were generally low (50%) in long-term population size were isolated occurrences and not maintained across sites and years. High harvest rates were observed only at low densities. Although these harvest rates may be sufficiently high to hold populations at low densities, the population is likely to escape this entrapment following a flush in food supply or a reduction in harvest effort. Implications. Our results demonstrated that, at current harvest rates, commercial harvesting is ineffective for the landscape-scale control of feral-pig populations. Unless harvest rates can be significantly increased, commercial harvesting should be used as a supplement to, rather than as a substitute for, other damage-control techniques

    Neste trabalho apresenta-se um método que estende o modelo de fraturamento coesivo proposto por Hillerborg et ~ 1 . ~ 3 ' para problemas tri-dimensionais. O principal objetivo é o estudo do efeito das dimensóes absolutas de elementos de materiais ceramicos em seu comportamento estrutural. As hipóteses básicas e limitacóes de tal método sáo apresentadas e discutidas. O novo modelo obtido é entáo apresentado através da formulacáo matricial do problema coesivo. Esta formulacáo fornece um sistema de equacóes nao-lineares que pode ser resolvido com o algoritmo de Newton-Raphson. O modelo é capaz de representar a evolucáo das zonas de processos inelásticos e das de fissura verdadeira para diferentes geometrias estruturais2. A implementacáo computacional do modelo é feita utilizando-se técnicas de programacáo orientada para objetos e computacáo gráfica. Finalmente, apresenta-se um exemplo em que uma soluqáo tri-dimensional gerada com este modelo matemático é comparada com a solucao bi-dimensional conhecida na literatura.Peer Reviewe

    The Distance to the Vela Supernova Remnant

    We have obtained high resolution Ca II and Na I absorption line spectra toward 68 OB stars in the direction of the Vela Supernova Remnant. The stars lie at distances of 190 -- 2800 pc as determined by Hipparcos and spectroscopic parallax estimations. The presence of high velocity absorption attributable to the remnant along some of the sight lines constrains the remnant distance to 250+/-30 pc. This distance is consistent with several recent investigations that suggest that the canonical remnant distance of 500 pc is too large.Comment: To be published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters Figure 1 y-axis labels correcte

    α-Synuclein Reduces Tension and Increases Undulations in Simulations of Small Unilamellar Vesicles

    AbstractUsing coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations we have explored the effect of α-Synuclein (αSyn) on the structural and mechanical properties of small unilamellar vesicles in the fluid-phase. The study is motivated by observations that a high density of membrane-bound αSyn inhibits the fusion of synthetic small unilamellar vesicles. By combining three-dimensional pressure tensor calculations with our recently developed spherical harmonics fluctuation analysis approach, we show a reduction in membrane surface tension and increased membrane undulations when αSyn is bound to the vesicle’s outer leaflet at a 200:1 L/P. The protein effects these changes by decreasing the negative pressure in the headgroup region of the outer leaflet and increasing the positive pressure throughout the hydrocarbon core

    Collapse of the charge ordering gap of Nd_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_{3} in an applied magnetic field

    We report results of tunneling studies on the charge ordering compound Nd_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_{3} in a magnetic field up to 6T and for temperature down to 25K.We show that a gap (2\Delta_{CO} \approx 0.5eV opens up in the density of state (DOS) at the Fermilevel (E_F) on charge ordering (T_{CO}=150K) which collapses in an applied magnetic field when the charge ordered state melts. There is a clear correspondence between the behavior of the resistivity and the gap formation and its collapse in an applied magnetic field. We conclude that a gap in the DOS at E_F is necessary for the stability of the charge ordered state.Comment: 4 pages REVTeX, 5 postscript figures included, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
