Senior thesis, Kansas State Agricultural College, 1905.Morse Department of Special CollectionsIntroduction: The generator tested for characteristic action under different load conditions is of the revolving field, separately excited, stationary armature type. The above drawing shows the principal points in the construction of the machine. On the left is the main pulley which is run by the main drive belt; on the right is a smaller one from which a small direct current generator is run for exciting the alternator field. The shaft is lubricated by rings which dip into an oil reservoir. The revolving field receives its exciting current from the exciter through two slip rings. The field spider and pole faces are of laminated steel that in the pole faces is japanned and that in the spider is not. These laminations are held together by bolts as shown in drawing. The armature ring is built of japanned laminations which are held together by bolts and clamps. If the laminations should for any reason become loose and cause a disagreeable humming they may readily be tightened. There are six field coils which are wound as shown; all coils are in series each adjacent one being wound opposite and the terminals brought to the slip rings. One brush on the ring is shown; there are two brushes on each ring. The scheme of an armature slot is shown on drawing and is the construction most commonly employed by modern dynamo builder

    Using Group Support Systems to Facilitate the Research Process

    Group Support Systems (GSS) and their effects on group processes and outcomes have been an object of intense study over the past ten years. The purpose of this paper is to take a different perspective with respect to GSS research. Rather than discussing research about GSS, we will discuss the capabilities of GSS tools to support the process of doing research. A model of the steps involved in the research process is discussed and specific suggestions for the application of GSS tools are mapped to these research steps. GSS can provide a variety of benefits to researchers, including basic meeting support for multiple researchers in developing elements of the research project, electronically recording data from subjects, performing data analysis, and integrating information and data across the entire research process

    The Effect of Luteolin on Human Glioblastoma

    Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is widely recognized as the most common and lethal of the malignant gliomas. Few effective therapeutic treatments are available as five-year survival rates of diagnosed individuals are less than five percent. Luteolin, a common flavonoid found in a variety of fruits and vegetables, has demonstrated significant promise in combating cancers of the breast, colon, liver, lung, and bone. In this study, we investigated the effects of luteolin on glioblastoma multiforme cell lines U-251, U-87, and U-1242. Cell viability was assessed using cell count with trypan blue exclusion and MTT assays. Results revealed that luteolin reduces GBM cell viability and cell proliferation in a time and concentration-dependent manner. Western Blot analysis indicated that luteolin decreased AKT, ERK, and MAPK phosphorylation following treatment with EGF. Additionally, luteolin promoted apoptosis in GBM cells by inducing PARP and caspase-3 cleavage, and decreasing levels of the anti-apoptotic protein BCL-XL. Our results indicate that luteolin exhibits a biological effect and may be used as a therapeutic agent for glioblastoma multiforme

    Attachment of Cobalt ā€œPicket Fenceā€ Porphyrin to the Surface of Gold Electrodes Coated with 1-(10-Mercaptodecyl)imidazole

    Self-assembled monolayers of 1-(10-mercaptodecyl)imidazole on Au electrodes were used to bind cobalt ā€œpicket fenceā€ porphyrin (cobalt 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(Ī±,Ī±,Ī±,Ī±-2-pivalamidophenyl)porphyrin) to the electrode surface. The binding involved coordination of the cobalt center of the porphyrin to the pendant imidazole groups in the monolayer coating. Attempts to coordinate the Co(II) oxidation state of the porphyrin to the coatings were not successful. However, with the Co(III) oxidation state, substantial binding was achieved which persisted even when the Co(III) was reduced to Co(II). Absorption spectra of the attached porphyrin were obtained for both oxidation states of the cobalt center. The remaining axial coordination site on the attached cobalt porphyrin is accessible to ligands, for example, imidazole, in aqueous solution

    East African lake evidence for Pliocene millennial-scale climate variability

    Late Cenozoic climate history in Africa was punctuated by episodes of variability, characterized by the appearance and disappearance of large freshwater lakes within the East African Rift Valley. In the Baringo-Bogoria basin, a well-dated sequence of diatomites and fluviolacustrine sediments documents the precessionally forced cycling of an extensive lake system between 2.70 Ma and 2.55 Ma. One diatomite unit was studied, using the oxygen isotope composition of diatom silica combined with X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and taxonomic assemblage changes, to explore the nature of climate variability during this interval. Data reveal a rapid onset and gradual decline of deepwater lake conditions, which exhibit millennial-scale cyclicity of āˆ¼1400ā€“1700 yr, similar to late Quaternary Dansgaard-Oeschger events. These cycles are thought to reflect enhanced precipitation coincident with increased monsoonal strength, suggesting the existence of a teleconnection between the high latitudes and East Africa during this period. Such climatic variability could have affected faunal and floral evolution at the time
