Archaeological Representation in Speculative Fiction: The Image of the Archaeologist in Star Wars

    Get PDF
The public presentation of archaeology in various media, especially fictional representations in print, film, TV, and video games, is a complex and slippery subject that has been an issue since the field’s inception. This thesis compares analyses of popular representations of archaeology in conventional media such as feature films to new examples of such representations that have not yet been studied. The focus of the analysis is how archaeology and archaeologists are represented in the Star Wars franchise in products that were published or released on or after 2014. These texts and images are analyzed through the multiple lenses of theoretical approaches to gender, colonialism and pseudo-science to determine whether and how such representations of archaeology and its practitioners have changed since the beginning of the Star Wars franchise and what has yet to change in the way archaeology is portrayed in these contexts. This research attempts to peer behind the curtain as well, revealing the conventions used to convey genre-specific representations of archaeology. Genre conventions often determine the outcome and characteristics of the stories told in various media about archaeology, which in turn affect how archaeology is presented and perceived. Lastly, examples of how more accurate and productive representations of archaeology could be developed within the Star Wars franchise are provided

Resistance On The Great Plains: The Bismarck Indian School, 1916-1921

The Bismarck Indian School was one of twenty-eight off-reservation boarding schools erected by the Bureau of Indian Affairs to assimilate Native children into the dominant White society. The school, located in Bismarck, North Dakota, opened in 1908 and briefly closed in 1918. The school started back up in the same year and became an all-female boarding school in 1922 until finally closing down in 1937. When beginning the research I was confronted with a problem; no one had previously written about the school. No other scholars had offered their analysis, or interpretations, on the institution or its pupils. The work presented here will be the first scholarship offered on the school. Utilizing primary archival documents, located at the Regional National Archives, in Kansas City, Missouri, the story of resistance is the subject matter explored in this thesis. Laying out my work thematically rather than chronologically allowed me to tell a larger story of resistance at the school, particularly between the years of 196-1921. Through the primary documents I show the strategies of resistance that the parents and students developed in response to the Bismarck Indian School, which proved to be an institution that was severely underfunded and lacked proper living conditions. The strategies employed for students ranged from fleeing the school, defying school rules, and fighting school employees. The parents chose to remain highly involved in their children\u27s life at the school, which at times resulted in removing their children from the school or making the community decision to not send any of their children to the institution

A search for gravitational lensing in 38 X-ray selected clusters of galaxies

We present the results of a CCD imaging survey for gravitational lensing in a sample of 38 X-ray-selected clusters of galaxies. Our sample consists of the most X-ray luminous (Lx>= 2x10^{44} erg s^{-1}) clusters selected from the Einstein Observatory Extended Medium Sensitivity Survey (EMSS) that are observable from Mauna Kea (dec > -40deg). The sample spans a redshift range of 0.15 0.5. CCD images of the clusters were obtained in excellent seeing. There is evidence of strong gravitational lensing in the form of giant arcs (length l > 8'', axis ratio l/w > 10) in 8 of the 38 clusters. Two additional clusters contain shorter arclets, and 6 more clusters contain candidate arcs that require follow-up observations to confirm their lensing origin. Since the survey does not have a uniform surface brightness limit we do not draw any conclusion based on the statistics of the arcs found. We note, however, that 60% (3 of 5) of the clusters with Lx > 10^{45} erg s^{-1}, and none of the 15 clusters with Lx < 4x10^{44} erg s^{-1} contain giant arcs, thereby confirming that high X-ray luminosity does identify the most massive systems, and thus X-ray selection is the preferred method for finding true, rich clusters at intermediate and high redshifts. The observed geometry of the arcs, most of which are thin, have large axis ratios (l/w > 10), and are aligned orthogonal to the optical major axes of the clusters, indicate the cluster core mass density profiles must be compact (steeper than isothermal). In several cases, however, there is also some evidence, in the form of possible radial arcs, for density profiles with finite core radii.Comment: Latex file, 17 pages, 7 jpeg figures, to be published in Astronomy and Astrophysics Supplement

PET ANIMALS' BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS: A REVIEW

    Get PDF
Nowadays, socializing of humans with pet animals has increased. The pet animals are treated as a part of the family and the physical interaction hasalso improved owing to the fact that the infected animals are not easily identifiable at an early stage and children are more prone to get infected. Thisleads to the necessity for monitoring and analyzing the behavior of the pet animals. The current trend is moving toward smart homes as the camerasare getting cheaper and easily available. The vision-based approach is one of the solutions to identify the behavioral changes of the pet animals. In thispaper, the study on behavioral analysis of dogs and cats as pet animals is reviewed.Ă‚

Uji Aktivitas Antioksidan Fraksi N-heksan Ekstrak Etanol Daun Karika (Carica Pubescens) Dan Identifikasi Senyawa Alkaloid Dan Flavonoidnya

Free radicals can lead to various dangerous diseases, such as cancer. Active compounds from medicinal plants such as flavonoids and alkaloids have been shown the antioxidant effects and may serve to prevent the negative effects of free radicals. Two of these compounds have been identified in leaf extract (Carica pubescens) and can be separated from other compounds with fractionation method. The purpose of this study was to determine the antioxidant activity of n-hexane fraction of karika leaves ethanol extract (HFKLEE) with DPPH method and identify its alkaloids and flavonoids compounds. Antioxidant activity of HFKLEE series concentration (50; 100; 150; 200; 250 and 300) ppm was performed by the DPPH method. Vitamin C series concentration (0.5; 1.0; 1.5; 2.0 and 2.5) ppm was used as a standard solution. Identification of alkaloids and flavonoids compound in HFKLEE determined by the thin layer chromatography (TLC) method. The results showed that HFKLEE has antioxidant activity with IC50 values of 157.134 ppm and Vitamin C at 2.875 ppm. TLC results indicate the presence of alkaloids and flavonoids compounds in HFKLEE

Biuret Staining and X-Ray Microanalysis for Locating Grafted Poly(Methyl Acrylate) on Wool Fibers

    Get PDF
Biuret reagent was used to stain wool fibers with copper so the location of a small amount of poly(methyl acrylate) grafted onto the fibers could be determined by energy dispersive x-ray microanalysis of copper. The grafted polymer was determined to be located in regions of the fibers where cuticle had been previously damaged. The amount of grafted polymer present was too small for secondary electron imaging to be useful for locating the polymer grafts
