    A Systematic Review of Amenable Resilience Factors That Moderate and/or Mediate the Relationship Between Childhood Adversity and Mental Health in Young People.

    Background: Up to half of Western children and adolescents experience at least one type of childhood adversity. Individuals with a history of childhood adversity have an increased risk of psychopathology. Resilience enhancing factors reduce the risk of psychopathology following childhood adversity. A comprehensive overview of empirically supported resilience factors is critically important for interventions aimed to increase resilience in young people. Moreover, such an overview may aid the development of novel resilience theories. Therefore, we conducted the first systematic review of social, emotional, cognitive and/or behavioral resilience factors after childhood adversity. Methods: We systematically searched Web of Science, PsycINFO, and Scopus (e.g., including MEDLINE) for English, Dutch, and German literature. We included cohort studies that examined whether a resilience factor was a moderator and/or a mediator for the relationship between childhood adversity and psychopathology in young people (mean age 13-24). Therefore, studies were included if the resilience factor was assessed prior to psychopathology, and childhood adversity was assessed no later than the resilience factor. Study data extraction was based on the STROBE report and study quality was assessed with an adapted version of Downs and Black's scale. Results: The search identified 1969 studies, of which 22 were included (eight nationalities, study sample n range: 59-6780). We found empirical support for 13 of 25 individual-level (e.g., high self-esteem, low rumination), six of 12 family-level (e.g., high family cohesion, high parental involvement), and one of five community-level resilience factors (i.e., high social support), to benefit mental health in young people exposed to childhood adversity. Single vs. multiple resilience factor models supported the notion that resilience factors should not be studied in isolation, and that interrelations between resilience factors should be taken into account when predicting psychopathology after childhood adversity. Conclusions: Interventions that improve individual, family, and/or social support resilience factors may reduce the risk of psychopathology following childhood adversity.     Creating Efficient and Sustainable Workflows for Scholarly Works into a DSpace Repository

    In fall 2017, a team at UH Libraries piloted an expanded set of repository services, including mediated submission of faculty and student works and faculty self-submissions. The Metadata and Digitization Services department worked closely with Digital Research Services to create and implement new workflows for the batch processing and upload of faculty and student research into the UH Institutional Repository. In the 2 month pilot phase, the team added over 650 faculty and student works to the IR and is now scaling up these services.Librarie

    Customized CV Service Workflows for DSpace Repositories

Conference abstract: The University of Houston Libraries has recently created and implemented workflows for the upload of large batches of faculty research into its DSpace Institutional Repository. These workflows are largely based on modifications made to existing scripts and open source packaging software, and were made possible through collaborative efforts with the Texas Digital Library and other DSpace institutions. This process has involved establishing new in-house metadata procedures and standards, templates for managing and sharing bibliographic data, and divisions of labor. Through the creation of these structured workflows, we have been able to scale our efforts, now employing and training a dedicated team of student employees to carry out this campus-wide service. Over a six-month span, the team has prepared over 1,300 full-text faculty works for ingest into the repository, using faculty CVs as its main source of bibliographic information. This presentation details the challenges and lessons learned from the development and refinement of these end-to-end workflows, as well as a discussion about the broader implications of establishing this option for our faculty researchers. We will package and publicly share all documentation related to this process in hopes that our efforts might inspire wider adoption of these workflows among the DSpace community.Librarie

    Novel deletions causing pseudoxanthoma elasticum underscore the genomic instability of the ABCC6 region

    Mutations in ABCC6 cause pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE), a heritable disease that affects elastic fibers. Thus far, >200 mutations have been characterized by various PCR-based techniques (primarily direct sequencing), identifying up to 90% of PXE-causing alleles. This study wanted to assess the importance of deletions and insertions in the ABCC6 genomic region, which is known to have a high recombinational potential. To detect ABCC6 deletions/insertions, which can be missed by direct sequencing, multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) was applied in PXE patients with an incomplete genotype. MLPA was performed in 35 PXE patients with at least one unidentified mutant allele after exonic sequencing and exclusion of the recurrent exon 23-29 deletion. Six multi-exon deletions and four single-exon deletions were detected. Using MLPA in addition to sequencing, we expanded the ABCC6 mutation spectrum with 9 novel deletions and characterized 25% of unidentified disease alleles. Our results further illustrate the instability of the ABCC6 genomic region and stress the importance of screening for deletions in the molecular diagnosis of PXE.     Diet quality and depressive symptoms in adolescence: no cross-sectional or prospective associations following adjustment for covariates.

    OBJECTIVE: Adolescence is a critical period for development of depression and understanding of behavioural risk factors is needed to support appropriate preventive strategies. We examined associations between adolescent diet quality and depressive symptoms, cross-sectionally and prospectively, in a large community cohort, adjusting for behavioural and psychosocial covariates. DESIGN: Prospective community-based cohort study (ROOTS). SETTING: Secondary schools in Cambridgeshire and Suffolk, UK. SUBJECTS: Study participants (n 603) who completed 4 d diet diaries at age 14 years and reported depressive symptoms (Moods and Feelings Questionnaire (MFQ)) at 14 and 17 years of age. RESULTS: Diet data were processed to derive a Mediterranean diet score (MDS) and daily servings of fruit and vegetables, and fish. At age 14 years, a negative association between fruit and vegetable intake and MFQ score was seen in the unadjusted cross-sectional regression model (ÎČ=-0·40; 95 % CI -0·71,-0·10), but adjustment for behavioural covariates, including smoking and alcohol consumption, attenuated this association. Fish intake and MDS were not cross-sectionally associated with MFQ score. No prospective associations were found between MDS, fruit and vegetable intake or fish intake and later MFQ score. CONCLUSIONS: Diet quality was not associated with depressive symptoms in mid-adolescence. Previously reported associations in this age range may be due to confounding. Further longitudinal studies are needed that investigate associations between adolescent diet and depression across different time frames and populations, ensuring appropriate adjustment for covariates

    Understanding the impact of children's and young people's self‐harm on parental well‐being: a systematic literature review of qualitative and quantitative findings

    Background: Self‐harm in children and young people is increasing. Parents are vital in supporting young people; however, parents may experience distress linked to the self‐harm. Previous reviews have highlighted the emotional impact and need for information and support, however, have not elucidated the relationships between these themes, nor examined the quantitative data examining parents' well‐being. Methods: We conducted a mixed methods review, with qualitative meta‐synthesis focusing on links between themes and quantitative synthesis of parental well‐being findings, including pooled means. PsycInfo, Medline, EMBASE, AMED, CINHAL and Web of Science were searched to identify relevant records. References of included studies were also searched. Every abstract was screened by two authors. Data were extracted by one author and checked by another. Results: We identified 39 reports of 32 studies: 16 with qualitative data and 17 with quantitative data (one had both). Qualitative findings showed how parents' emotions were associated to their knowledge and beliefs about self‐harm. Parents' emotions often evidenced the need to self‐care, but emotions of guilt reduced engagement in self‐care. How parents supported their young person was linked to their knowledge, and the management of their own emotions, and influenced if they could engage in self‐care. Quantitative findings were mixed, however suggested poor general mental health amongst these parents. Conclusions: Further good quality quantitative studies are needed, with measurement of psychological mechanisms that may underpin parental distress. Current evidence supports peer‐support and interventions that go beyond information provision to address the connected factors of knowledge, emotion, self‐care, and parenting behaviours

    Poor family functioning mediates the link between childhood adversity and adolescent non-suicidal self-injury

    Background: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a common harmful behavior during adolescence. Exposure to childhood family adversity (CFA) is associated with subsequent emergence of NSSI during adolescence. However, the pathways through which this early environmental risk may operate are not clear. Aims: We tested four alternative hypotheses to explain the association between CFA and adolescent-onset NSSI. Methods: A community sample of n = 933 fourteen year olds with no history of NSSI were followed for three years. Results: Poor family functioning at age 14 mediated the association between CFA before age 5 and subsequent onset of NSSI between 14-17 years. Conclusion: The findings support the cumulative suboptimal environmental hazards (proximal family relationships as a mediator) hypothesis. Improving the family environment at age 14 may mitigate the effects of CFA on adolescent onset of NSSI.MC was funded by a doctoral scholarship from the Gates Cambridge Trust.     REACT study protocol: resilience after the COVID-19 threat (REACT) in adolescents.

    INTRODUCTION: COVID-19-related social isolation and stress may have significant mental health effects, including post-traumatic stress, anxiety and depression. These factors are thought to disproportionately affect populations at risk of psychopathology, such as adolescents with a history of childhood adversity (CA). Therefore, examining which factors may buffer the impact of COVID-19-related stress and isolation in vulnerable adolescents is critical. The Resilience After the COVID-19 Threat (REACT) study assesses whether emotion regulation capacity, inflammation and neuroimmune responses to stress induced in the laboratory prior to the pandemic predict responses to COVID-19-related social isolation and stress in adolescents with CA. We aim to elucidate the mechanisms that enable vulnerable adolescents to maintain or regain good mental health when confronted with COVID-19. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We recruited 79 adolescents aged 16-26 with CA experiences from the Resilience After Individual Stress Exposure study in which we assessed emotion regulation, neural and immune stress responses to an acute stress task. Our sample completed questionnaires at the start of the UK lockdown ('baseline'; April 2020) and three (July 2020) and 6 months later (October 2020) providing crucial longitudinal information across phases of the pandemic progression and government response. The questionnaires assess (1) mental health, (2) number and severity of life events, (3) physical health, (4) stress perception and (5) loneliness and friendship support. We will use multilevel modelling to examine whether individual differences at baseline are associated with responses to COVID-19-related social isolation and stress. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This study has been approved by the Cambridge Psychology Research Ethics Committee (PRE.2020.037). Results of the REACT study will be disseminated in publications in scientific peer-reviewed journals, presentations at scientific conferences and meetings, publications and presentations for the general public, and through social media

    The Development of Recommendations for Healthcare Providers to Support Patients Experiencing Medication Self-Management Problems

    Medication self-management problems such as the inability to correctly obtain, understand, organize, administer or monitor medication can result in negative patient outcomes. However, supportive tools for healthcare providers to assist patients with medication self-management problems are lacking. This study aimed to develop recommendations for healthcare providers to support patients with polypharmacy who experience medication self-management problems. A three-phase study was conducted starting with (1) the mapping of medication self-management problems, followed by (2) a scoping review providing a list of relevant interventions and actions for each respective problem and (3) a three-round modified e-Delphi study with experts to reach consensus on the relevance and clarity of the recommended interventions and actions. The cut-off for consensus on the relevance and clarity of the recommendations was set at 80% expert agreement. Experts could propose additional recommendations based on their professional experience and expertise. The experts (n = 23) involved were healthcare professionals (i.e., nurses, pharmacists, and physicians) with specific expertise in medication management of patients with polypharmacy. Simultaneous with the second e-Delphi round, a panel of patients with polypharmacy (n = 8) evaluated the usefulness of recommendations. Results obtained from the patient panel were fed back to the panel of healthcare providers in the third e-Delphi round. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis. Twenty medication self-management problems were identified. Based on the scoping review, a list of 66 recommendations for healthcare providers to support patients with the identified medication self-management problems was composed. At the end of the three-round e-Delphi study, the expert panel reached consensus on the relevance and clarity of 67 recommendations, clustered according to the six phases of the medication self-management model by Bailey et al. In conclusion, this study resulted in a guidance document including recommendations that can serve as a resource for healthcare providers to support patients with polypharmacy in case of medication self-management problems. Future research should focus on the evaluation of the feasibility and user-friendliness of the guide with recommendations in clinical practice.</p
