    Assessment of air pollutants removal by green infrastructure and urban and peri-urban forests management for a greening plan in the Municipality of Ferrara (Po river plain, Italy)

    Air pollution is a serious concern for human health and is even more worrying in areas that are known to be "pollution hotspots", such as the Po Plain in northern Italy. The Urban Green Infrastructure (UGI), which includes urban and peri-urban forests, enhances human health and wellbeing delivering a wide range of ecosystem services, including air quality improvement. In this research, we analyzed, in biophysical and monetary terms, the role of the UGI in removing PM10 and O-3 from the atmosphere in the Municipality of Ferrara using established removal models. We used a multiscale approach that includes geospatial data, field sampling and laboratory analysis. Then, using a local green areas database, we located public areas that could potentially undergo forestation actions without requiring any land conversion and evaluated the benefit in terms of ESs provision that these actions may exert. We found that, in 2019, the UGI in the Municipality of Ferrara removed about 19.8 Mg of PM10 and 8.6 Mg of O-3, for a monetary benefit of (sic) 2.12 million (sic) and 147*103 respectively. We then identified about 121 ha within the urban core of the Municipality that could potentially be forested. Such an action would increase the PM10 and O-3 removal by about 49% and 18%, respectively. Our findings comply with the EU Biodiversity strategy for 2030, which calls for the development of an ambitious greening plan for cities with more than 20,000 inhabitants

    Hepatitis C virus syndrome: A constellation of organ- and non-organ specific autoimmune disorders, B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and cancer

    The clinical course of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is characterized by possible development of both liver and extrahepatic disorders. The tropism of HCV for the lymphoid tissue is responsible for several immune-mediated disorders; a poly-oligoclonal B-lymphocyte expansion, commonly observed in a high proportion of patients with HCV infection, are responsible for the production of different autoantibodies and immune-complexes, such as mixed cryoglobulins. These serological alterations may characterize a variety of autoimmune or neoplastic diseases. Cryoglobulinemic vasculitis due to small-vessel deposition of circulating mixed cryoglobulins is the prototype of HCV-driven immune-mediated and lymphoproliferative disorders; interestingly, in some cases the disease may evolve to frank malignant lymphoma. In addition, HCV shows an oncogenic potential as suggested by several clinico-epidemiological and laboratory studies; in addition to hepatocellular carcinoma that represents the most frequent HCV-related malignancy, a causative role of HCV has been largely demonstrated in a significant percentage of patients with isolated B-cells non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. The same virus may be also involved in the pathogenesis of papillary thyroid cancer, a rare neoplastic condition that may complicate HCV-related thyroid involvement. Patients with HCV infection are frequently asymptomatic or may develop only hepatic alteration, while a limited but clinically relevant number can develop one or more autoimmune and/or neoplastic disorders. Given the large variability of their prevalence among patients' populations from different countries, it is possible to hypothesize a potential role of other co-factors, i.e., genetic and/or environmental, in the pathogenesis of HCV-related extra-hepatic diseases

    Treatment of HCV-related mixed cryoglobulinemia

    Mixed cryoglobulinemia syndrome (MCs) is a systemic vasculitis, involving skin, joints, peripheral nerves, and several internal organs. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is recognized as the etiologic agent for the majority of MCs patients, as well as of number of autoimmune, lymphoproliferative, and neoplastic disorders. In this context, HCV-related MCs represents an important model autoimmune/neoplastic disease triggered by a virus in humans. With regard the therapeutic strategies of MCs, we can treat these patients at different steps by means of etiological (antivirals), pathogenetic, symptomatic drugs (mainly immunosuppressors, corticosteroids, plasmapheresis). In the majority of individuals, MCs shows a mild, slow-progressive clinical course needing only symptomatic treatments, generally low doses of corticosteroids. Considering the etiopathogenesis of MCs, the eradication of HCV should be considered the gold standard in the treatment of MCs. The use of combined peg-interferon-α/ribavirin and/or novel antiviral drugs may lead to HCV eradication in a significant percentage of cases with possible remission of MCs. On the other hand, the presence of rapidly progressive, diffuse vasculitis with multiple organ involvement may be successfully treated with aggressive immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory therapies, mainly based on cyclophosphamide or rituximab, high dose corticosteroids, and plasma aphaeresis. Moreover, sequential/combined antiviral or immunosuppressive treatments could represent an useful therapeutic strategy particularly in MCs patients with major clinical manifestations. The treatment of MCs should be decided for every patient according to the severity of clinical picture. Thus, a careful follow-up of the disease is necessary, with particular attention to the possibility of cancers onset, such as B-cell lymphoma. The present review focuses on the different therapeutic strategies in patients with MCs, including the treatment of cryoglobulinemic skin ulcers, which represents one of the most discouraging complications of the disease

    Assessing the Impact of Climate Change on the Biodeterioration Risk in Historical Buildings of the Mediterranean Area: The State Archives of Palermo

    The growing sensitivity towards environmental sustainability, particularly in the light of climate change, requires a reflection on the role that historical buildings can play in heritage conservation. This research proposed an interdisciplinary approach combining climate and biological expertise to evaluate the biodeterioration risk associated with different IPCC outdoor climate scenarios. Conduction heat transfer functions and dose–response functions were used to model the indoor climate of a historical building and the related climate-induced risk of mould and pest proliferation. The approach was applied to a case study in the Mediterranean area, i.e., the State Archives of Palermo (Italy) housed in a 15th-century convent. In 2018, a survey conducted by ICPAL-MiC experts warned about past infestations and risks deriving from climate conditions. An environmental monitoring campaign conducted in 2021 allowed for the characterisation of the buffering effect in a historical building in response to the outdoor climate and the simulation of future indoor climate. Since indoor temperature and mixing ratio are expected to raise in future scenarios, it was found that there is an increased risk of insects’ proliferation, combined with a decreased risk of spore germination and mould growth.     Tuning América Latina es un trabajo conjunto que busca y construye lenguaje y sistemas de carácter transicional y transregional. En el marco del Proyecto Alfa Tuning América Latina se constituyó el grupo del área de geología (año 2006), conformado por representantes de universidades de los países de América Latina. El objetivo general es aplicar las competencias genéricas y específicas en dicha área. Ha sido concebido como un espacio de reflexión de actores comprometidos con la educación profesional, que a través de la búsqueda de consensos, avancen en el desarrollo de titulaciones fácilmente comparables y comprensibles de forma articulada en toda América Latina. La idea de llevar adelante una propuesta como la de Tuning en América Latina, surge en Europa pero planteados por latinoamericanos. La metodología empleada se fundamentó en las consultas sobre los comportamientos específicos notándose coincidencias en los procesos de formación académica en todos los países de América Latina que participaron, aplicándose un método estadístico descriptivo, considerándose el cálculo de la media y la desviación estándar de la variable obtenida de las encuestas. Se analizó y discutió el panorama del área temática en los distintos países, se analizaron las competencias genéricas elaboradas en etapas anteriores del proyecto, se definieron las competencias específicas y los métodos de consulta para su evaluación. En los resultados se resalta la importancia de obtener un espectro amplio, tanto de países e instituciones con el fin de consolidar dicho proyecto

    Collective emotions online and their influence on community life

    E-communities, social groups interacting online, have recently become an object of interdisciplinary research. As with face-to-face meetings, Internet exchanges may not only include factual information but also emotional information - how participants feel about the subject discussed or other group members. Emotions are known to be important in affecting interaction partners in offline communication in many ways. Could emotions in Internet exchanges affect others and systematically influence quantitative and qualitative aspects of the trajectory of e-communities? The development of automatic sentiment analysis has made large scale emotion detection and analysis possible using text messages collected from the web. It is not clear if emotions in e-communities primarily derive from individual group members' personalities or if they result from intra-group interactions, and whether they influence group activities. We show the collective character of affective phenomena on a large scale as observed in 4 million posts downloaded from Blogs, Digg and BBC forums. To test whether the emotions of a community member may influence the emotions of others, posts were grouped into clusters of messages with similar emotional valences. The frequency of long clusters was much higher than it would be if emotions occurred at random. Distributions for cluster lengths can be explained by preferential processes because conditional probabilities for consecutive messages grow as a power law with cluster length. For BBC forum threads, average discussion lengths were higher for larger values of absolute average emotional valence in the first ten comments and the average amount of emotion in messages fell during discussions. Our results prove that collective emotional states can be created and modulated via Internet communication and that emotional expressiveness is the fuel that sustains some e-communities.Comment: 23 pages including Supporting Information, accepted to PLoS ON
