    [EN] The tribo-electrochemical behavior of AISI 316L has been investigated under tribocorrosion conditions in a 3% NaCl solution and the material damage evolution with time has been analyzed. A numerical contact model based on a Boundary Element Method (BEM) has been developed in order to determine the contact pressure distribution and to quantify the worn material as a function of time. The time dependence of the tribological behavior of the material has been described. At the initial state, the high contact pressures generate a material flow causing an increase in the worn area. After around 300 cycles, the Archard wear model linearly describes the wear evolution with time. The proposed model describes the evolution with time of the wear profiles of the tested material and takes into account the plastic behavior of the material during the first cycles.This work has been funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness under the Ref.     Chemo-mechanical effects on the tribocorrosion behavior of titanium/ceramic dental implant pairs in artificial saliva

    [EN] In this paper, the degradation mechanisms of the ceramic and the metal in Titanium/Zirconia pairs for biomedical applications were analyzed. To do that, an experimental set-up with well-controlled mechanical and chemical conditions was used based on a unidirectional ball-on-disk tribometer coupled to a potentiostat. Tribocorrosion tests were carried out in artificial saliva at different applied potentials, this is, different chemical conditions of the surface. Wear damage of the titanium/zirconia pair was influenced by the properties and the behavior of wear debris in the contact. Under passive conditions metallic and oxidized titanium particles (formed by the cyclic removal of the passive film and subsequent repassivation) were smeared and mechanically mixed within the contact forming compacted wear debris through which the loading was carried out. Properties and amount of oxidized titanium lead to low wear at low passive conditions (OCP) and higher wear at high passive conditions.     Towards Born European ICT Enterprises - The Challenges Of European ICT Entrepreneurship

    We live in a world that is changing constantly due to the pervasive impact of technologies, such as mobile smart phones, social media, wireless sensor networks, etc. Many of these technologies did not exist 5 years ago and our lives, society, business and, from an academic perspective the Information Systems(IS) research agendas are being shaped by entrepreneurial endeavours. Even in this context, the IS academic community and scholarship has reverted to a following role in the wave of technology led modernity rather than acting as a leader. However, the IS field is boundary crossing and traditionally has assimilated concepts from different disciplines and there are recent calls for IS to consider high technology entrepreneurship. IS can adopt a more an entrepreneurial approach to education and research. In the case of education, this would involve adopting the complete entrepreneurial value creation cycle, which includes identification of the opportunity, through marshalling the resources, exploitation of enterprise growth and harvesting the opportunity. The challenge for the IS field is to play a more proactive role in making these opportunities happen, yielding new technologies to improve the lives and wellbeing of the global population.     Evidence for indigenous nitrogen in sedimentary and aeolian deposits from the Curiosity rover investigations at Gale crater, Mars

    The Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) investigation on the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity rover has detected oxidized nitrogen-bearing compounds during pyrolysis of scooped aeolian sediments and drilled sedimentary deposits within Gale crater. Total N concentrations ranged from 20 to 250 nmol N per sample. After subtraction of known N sources in SAM, our results support the equivalent of 110–300 ppm of nitrate in the Rocknest (RN) aeolian samples, and 70–260 and 330–1,100 ppm nitrate in John Klein (JK) and Cumberland (CB) mudstone deposits, respectively. Discovery of indigenous martian nitrogen in Mars surface materials has important implications for habitability and, specifically, for the potential evolution of a nitrogen cycle at some point in martian history. The detection of nitrate in both wind-drifted fines (RN) and in mudstone (JK, CB) is likely a result of N2 fixation to nitrate generated by thermal shock from impact or volcanic plume lightning on ancient Mars. Fixed nitrogen could have facilitated the development of a primitive nitrogen cycle on the surface of ancient Mars, potentially providing a biochemically accessible source of nitrogen

    Can the deployment of community health workers for the delivery of HIV services represent an effective and sustainable response to health workforce shortages? Results of a multicountry study

    In countries severely affected by HIV/AIDS, shortages of health workers present a major obstacle to scaling up HIV services. Adopting a task shifting approach for the deployment of community health workers (CHWs) represents one strategy for rapid expansion of the health workforce. This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of CHWs with a focus on identifying the critical elements of an enabling environment that can ensure they provide quality services in a manner that is sustainable. The method of work included a collection of primary data in five countries: Brazil, Ethiopia, Malawi, Namibia, and Uganda. The findings show that delegation of specific tasks to cadres of CHWs with limited training can increase access to HIV services, particularly in rural areas and among underserved communities, and can improve the quality of care for HIV. There is also evidence that CHWs can make a significant contribution to the delivery of a wide range of other health services. The findings also show that certain conditions must be observed if CHWs are to contribute to well-functioning and sustainable service delivery. These conditions involve adequate systems integration with significant attention to: political will and commitment; collaborative planning; definition of scope of practice; selection and educational requirements; registration, licensure and certification; recruitment and deployment; adequate and sustainable remuneration; mentoring and supervision including referral system; career path and continuous education; performance evaluation; supply of equipment and commodities. The study concludes that, where there is the necessary support, the potential contribution of CHWs can be optimized and represents a valuable addition to the urgent expansion of human resources for health, and to universal coverage of HIV services

    Advancing the 3Rs: innovation, implementation, ethics and society

    The 3Rs principle of replacing, reducing and refining the use of animals in science has been gaining widespread support in the international research community and appears in transnational legislation such as the European Directive 2010/63/EU, a number of national legislative frameworks like in Switzerland and the UK, and other rules and guidance in place in countries around the world. At the same time, progress in technical and biomedical research, along with the changing status of animals in many societies, challenges the view of the 3Rs principle as a sufficient and effective approach to the moral challenges set by animal use in research. Given this growing awareness of our moral responsibilities to animals, the aim of this paper is to address the question: Can the 3Rs, as a policy instrument for science and research, still guide the morally acceptable use of animals for scientific purposes, and if so, how? The fact that the increased availability of alternatives to animal models has not correlated inversely with a decrease in the number of animals used in research has led to public and political calls for more radical action. However, a focus on the simple measure of total animal numbers distracts from the need for a more nuanced understanding of how the 3Rs principle can have a genuine influence as a guiding instrument in research and testing. Hence, we focus on three core dimensions of the 3Rs in contemporary research: (1) What scientific innovations are needed to advance the goals of the 3Rs? (2) What can be done to facilitate the implementation of existing and new 3R methods? (3) Do the 3Rs still offer an adequate ethical framework given the increasing social awareness of animal needs and human moral responsibilities? By answering these questions, we will identify core perspectives in the debate over the advancement of the 3Rs

    Population-based incidence of lymphoid neoplasms : Twenty years of epidemiological data in the Girona province, Spain

    Background: The aim of this study was to describe incidence patterns of lymphoid neoplasms in the Girona province (Spain) (1996-2015), and to predict the number of cases in Spain during 2020. Methods: Data were extracted from the Girona cancer registry. Incident cases were classified using the ICD-O-3, third revision, and grouped according to the WHO 2008 classification scheme. Age-adjusted incidence rates to the European standard population (ASRE) were estimated and incidence trends were modeled using Joinpoint. Results: 4367 lymphoid neoplasms were diagnosed in the Girona province. The ASRE for overall lymphoma was 37.1 (95% CI: 36.0; 38.2), with a marked male predominance in almost all subtypes. During 1996-2015, incidence trends remained stable for broader lymphoma categories. According to our predictions, 17,950 new cases of LNs will be diagnosed in Spain in 2020. Conclusions: This 'real-world' data will provide valuable information to better inform etiological hypotheses and plan future health-care services

    Central tolerance shapes the neutralizing B cell repertoire against a persisting virus in its natural host

    Viral mimicry of host cell structures has been postulated to curtail the B cell receptor (BCR) repertoire against persisting viruses through tolerance mechanisms. This concept awaits, however, experimental testing in a setting of natural virus–host relationship. We engineered mouse models expressing a monoclonal BCR specific for the envelope glycoprotein of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV), a naturally persisting mouse pathogen. When the heavy chain of the LCMV-neutralizing antibody KL25 was paired with its unmutated ancestor light chain, most B cells underwent receptor editing, a behavior reminiscent of autoreactive clones. In contrast, monoclonal B cells expressing the same heavy chain in conjunction with the hypermutated KL25 light chain did not undergo receptor editing but exhibited low levels of surface IgM, suggesting that light chain hypermutation had lessened KL25 autoreactivity. Upon viral challenge, these IgM low^{low} cells were not anergic but up-regulated IgM, participated in germinal center reactions, produced antiviral antibodies, and underwent immunoglobulin class switch as well as further affinity maturation. These studies on a persisting virus in its natural host species suggest that central tolerance mechanisms prune the protective antiviral B cell repertoire
