    Learning from our Multi-Stage Collaborative Autoethnography

    This article is a reflection on eight, then seven, now five womenā€™s collaborative efforts to explore the development of our own leader identities. While each of us conducts research on women and leadership, we are a diverse group of women: we were born in three different countries (United States, Paraguay, and New Zealand) and currently live in three different countries (United States, Canada, and New Zealand). We are of diverse races, sexual orientations, and generations; we have leadership experiences in a variety of disciplines and industries; and we vary in the priority we place on this study. In this paper, we review our experiences conducting research during the first three plus years of our collaborative autoethnographic study and share what we learned from those experiences. We address previously published considerations for developing collaborative autoethnographies including: the number of participants involved; the extent of involvement of the participants and the level of collaboration during the study; the collaborative approaches used in the study; and the approaches to writing. We add a reflection on our leadership practices throughout the study and on the confidentiality challenges that emerged. We also discuss how our division of the study into multiple life stages and multiple projects within the life stages has influenced our experiences and how the challenges resulting from the long duration of our study have influenced our productivity and are expected to influence our future plans. Our lessons learned should prove useful as other autoethnographic research groups begin their own research processes

    Antibodies in healthcare personnel following severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection

    In a prospective cohort of healthcare personnel (HCP), we measured severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) nucleocapsid IgG antibodies after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Among 79 HCP, 68 (86%) were seropositive 14-28 days after their positive PCR test, and 54 (77%) of 70 were seropositive at the 70-180-day follow-up. Many seropositive HCP (95%) experienced an antibody decline by the second visit

    Misuse of "study drugs:" prevalence, consequences, and implications for policy

    BACKGROUND: Non-medical/illegal use of prescription stimulants popularly have been referred to as "study drugs". This paper discusses the current prevalence and consequences of misuse of these drugs and implications of this information for drug policy. RESULTS: Study drugs are being misused annually by approximately 4% of older teens and emerging adults. Yet, there are numerous consequences of misuse of prescription stimulants including addiction, negative reactions to high dosages, and medical complications. Policy implications include continuing to limit access to study drugs, finding more safe prescription drug alternatives, interdiction, and public education. CONCLUSION: Much more work is needed on prescription stimulant misuse assessment, identifying the extent of the social and economic costs of misuse, monitoring and reducing access, and developing prevention and cessation education efforts

    Seroprevalence of severe acute respiratory coronavirus virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) antibodies among healthcare personnel in the Midwestern United States, September 2020ā€“April 2021

    Abstract Objective: To determine the prevalence of severe acute respiratory coronavirus virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) IgG nucleocapsid (N) antibodies among healthcare personnel (HCP) with no prior history of COVID-19 and to identify factors associated with seropositivity. Design: Prospective cohort study. Setting: An academic, tertiary-care hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Participants: The study included 400 HCP aged ā‰„18 years who potentially worked with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients and had no known history of COVID-19; 309 of these HCP also completed a follow-up visit 70ā€“160 days after enrollment. Enrollment visits took place between September and December 2020. Follow-up visits took place between December 2020 and April 2021. Methods: At each study visit, participants underwent SARS-CoV-2 IgG N-antibody testing using the Abbott SARS-CoV-2 IgG assay and completed a survey providing information about demographics, job characteristics, comorbidities, symptoms, and potential SARS-CoV-2 exposures. Results: Participants were predominately women (64%) and white (79%), with median age of 34.5 years (interquartile range [IQR], 30ā€“45). Among the 400 HCP, 18 (4.5%) were seropositive for IgG N-antibodies at enrollment. Also, 34 (11.0%) of 309 were seropositive at follow-up. HCP who reported having a household contact with COVID-19 had greater likelihood of seropositivity at both enrollment and at follow-up. Conclusions: In this cohort of HCP during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, āˆ¼1 in 20 had serological evidence of prior, undocumented SARS-CoV-2 infection at enrollment.     The Drosophila melanogaster host model

    The deleterious and sometimes fatal outcomes of bacterial infectious diseases are the net result of the interactions between the pathogen and the host, and the genetically tractable fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, has emerged as a valuable tool for modeling the pathogenā€“host interactions of a wide variety of bacteria. These studies have revealed that there is a remarkable conservation of bacterial pathogenesis and host defence mechanisms between higher host organisms and Drosophila. This review presents an in-depth discussion of the Drosophila immune response, the Drosophila killing model, and the use of the model to examine bacterialā€“host interactions. The recent introduction of the Drosophila model into the oral microbiology field is discussed, specifically the use of the model to examine Porphyromonas gingivalisā€“host interactions, and finally the potential uses of this powerful model system to further elucidate oral bacterial-host interactions are addressed

    Cambrian (Guzhangian Stage) trilobites from Ohio, USA, and modification of the Cedaria Zone as used in Laurentia

    Two Cambrian trilobites, Olenoides? sp. from the Mount Simon Sandstone and Cedaria woosteri from the Eau Claire Formation, are described from the subsurface of western Ohio, USA. The definition of the Cedaria Zone is modified to reflect differing interpretations of the zone as used historically in restricted-shelf and open-shelf lithofacies of the Laurentian palaeocontinent. The Cedaria prolifica Zone is proposed for use primarily in open-shelf lithofacies, and the C. woosteri Zone is proposed for use in more restricted, inner-shelf lithofacies. Olenoides? sp. from the Mount Simon Formation is interpreted as representing the C. prolifica Zone, and C. woosteri is the eponymous species of the C. woosteri Zone. Both polymerid trilobite biozones are in the Guzhangian Stage (Cambrian, provisional Series 3). Based on trilobite zonation, the Mount Simon Sandstone and most of the Eau Claire Formation of western Ohio are interpreted as being Guzhangian in age

    Transient cellular adhesion on poly(ethylene-glycol)-dimethacrylate hydrogels facilitates a novel stem cell bandage approach.

    We discovered a transient adhesion property in poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEG-DMA) hydrogels and employed it to develop a novel "stem cell bandage" model of cellular delivery. First, we cultured human mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) on the surface of PEG-DMA hydrogels with high amounts of arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) adhesive peptides (RGD++) or without RGD (RGD-). On day 1, MSCs underwent an initial adhesion to RGD- hydrogels that was not significantly different over 13 days (n = 6). In addition, cells appeared to be well spread by day 3. Significantly fewer cells were present on RGD- hydrogels on day 15 compared to day 9, suggesting that RGD- hydrogels allow for an initial cellular adhesion that is stable for multiple days, but transient over longer periods with a decrease by day 15. This initial adhesion is especially surprising considering that PEG-DMA does not contain any biological adhesion motifs and is almost chemically identical to poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEG-DA), which has been shown to be non-adhesive without RGD. We hypothesized that MSCs could be cultured on RGD- PEG-DMA hydrogels and then applied to a wound site to deliver cells in a novel approach that we refer to as a "stem cell bandage". RGD- donor hydrogels were successfully able to deliver MSCs to PEG-DMA acceptor hydrogels with high RGD content (RGD++) or low amounts of RGD (RGD+). Our novel "bandage" approach promoted cell delivery to these model surfaces while preventing cells from diffusing away. This stem cell delivery strategy may provide advantages over more common stem cell delivery approaches such as direct injections or encapsulation and thus may be valuable as an alternative tissue engineering approach
