The Mother Tongue: Acquiring Language and Being Human

One of my favorite Far Sides shows a spider on an analyst\u27s couch, saying, It\u27s the same dream night after night...I walk out on my web, and suddenly a foot sticks-and then another foot sticks, and another, and another, and another.... Gary Larsen\u27s spider expresses the impression that people who are fascinated by language have: language is like a web. I spin it out thinking that I have it under control, and suddenly it seems I am caught in the system of words. I open my mouth to speak, and suddenly words appear or disappear, the wrong words come, or unintentional double meanings embarrass me like slipping on a banana peel. Or I get entangled in what I\u27 m trying to express or in the associations of words with each other. Language helps us get what we want. However, we are caught in it also, tantalized by and yet separated from what we most deeply desire

An Interactive Curricula Experience (iCE) for Latino Immigrant Health

The Interactive Curricula Experience (iCE) is an educational platform intended for interactive education utilizing multiple forms of media. It is being utilized at Thomas Jefferson University (TJU) in various classes, among them Global Health. One of the pertinent global-health-at-home topics at TJU relates to Latino immigrant health. Latino immigrants number more than 20,000 in Philadelphia. They are located throughout the city, although the highest concentrations are in North and South Philadelphia. With respect to health care, Latino immigrants are less likely to have a regular health care provider than non-immigrant Latinos. Education to provide culturally sensitive care to Latino immigrants is vital to establish longer-lasting patient-doctor partnerships and decrease the number of Latino immigrants without a regular health care provider. iCE is an attempt to provide that education by stepping out of the lecture hall and assigned readings, and instead allowing students to engage with the material at their own pace.https://jdc.jefferson.edu/cwicposters/1021/thumbnail.jp

    Project LUSE

The LUnar Surface Environment (LUSE) testbed was developed with Embry-Riddle’s Space Technology Laboratory to create an apparatus in which to simulate impacts on the surface of the Moon. LUSE was designed in such a way where test articles could be dropped into the testbed, but other experiments can be performed as well. The LUSE testbed consists of a layer of sand and rock topped with a layer of LMS-1 Lunar Mare Regolith Simulant supplied by the Exolith Lab at the University of Central Florida. The testbed is encased in plexiglass to allow for sensors to observe impacts in a safe environment. Student research projects now can test various theories and projects. Recently, the EagleCam team used the LUSE testbed to simulate their CubeSat’s impact on the surface of the Moon. An EagleCam model was dropped from a scissor lift at the MicaPlex to validate the dynamics model by capturing the impact through an inertial measurement unit inside the model and a high-speed camera

Mediated searching on end-user systems: an inexpensive online resource

While BRS/After Dark and Dialog's Knowledge Index were developed for the end-user market, their attractive pricing structures, system refinements, and increasing selection of databases make them possible considerations as initial or adjunct systems for mediated search programs. Although it is assumed that mediated searching of these systems on a ready-reference basis is being done in libraries utilizing them as end-user services, there is rare mention in the literature of their employment as major components of standard mediated search services. This article details the 3.5 years' experience using BRS/After Dark and Knowledge Index as the main systems of choice in a mediated search service of a department library on a large academic campus. It also considers the after-hours services from the intermediary's point of view, noting the major trade-offs made in choosing to search them in lieu of their parent (BRS and Dialog) services
