    IN VITRO EVALUATION OF GLYCOLIPOPROTEIN POWDER FROM EARTHWORM EUDRILUS EUGENIAE

    Objective: The researchers are searching for innate bioactive compounds, competent of curing various diseases. In the present study, the cytotoxicity and the angiogenic nature of the glycolipoprotein powder from the earthworm were considered for its pharmaceutical and biological uses.Methods: The in vitro MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay of the glycolipoprotein powder (GLP) of the earthworm in the Murine embryonic fibroblast cell line (NIH 3T3) was performed. Further the haemolytic assay of the GLP was also tested. The angiogenic potential was also evaluated by the (in vitro) chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) model in 9 days old fertilized chick eggs.Results: The MTT assay was performed wherein the cell response to extract was by dose-dependent manner and great cytotoxic effect was not shown for the tested concentrations. In the MTT assay increased cell viability (84%) was found at concentrations of 100 µg/ml. The hemolytic activity of the extract was also determined, wherein it showed insignificant lytic activity compared to the control. On performing the CAM assay, 500 μl extract (25 μg/ml) was found to increase the number of capillaries on the treated CAM surfaces after 72 hours of incubation.Conclusion: These findings suggested that the earthworm powder possesses the significant angiogenic potential, which may be beneficial in the treatment of wound healing.Â

    SWKB Quantization Rules for Bound States in Quantum Wells

    In a recent paper by Gomes and Adhikari (J.Phys B30 5987(1997)) a matrix formulation of the Bohr-Sommerfield quantization rule has been applied to the study of bound states in one dimension quantum wells. Here we study these potentials in the frame work of supersymmetric WKB (SWKB) quantization approximation and find that SWKB quantization rule is superior to the modified Bohr-Sommerfield or WKB rules as it exactly reproduces the eigenenergies.Comment: 8 page

    ASSESSING THE COMPETING ABILITY OF WEEDY RICE (Oryza sativa f. spontanea) WITH CULTIVATED RICE UNDER ELEVATED CO2 CONDITIONS

    Climate change can adversely affect rice production, especially for weed management in the context of emergence and proliferation of newer weed species like weedy rice (Oryza sativa f. spontanea) in the rice growing tracts of Kerala. In the past decade, atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) has risen from 371.82 to 407.05 ppm from 2000 to 2018 which might have an impact on the competitive ability of a C3 plant like weedy rice. The competitiveness of weedy rice was studied in an open top chamber (OTC) under a CO2 concentration of 500 ppm (Chamber A), OTC without external CO2 supply (Chamber B), and open condition along with two popular cultivated rice varieties Uma and Jyothi with both air and soil temperature inside the chamber to the tune of 40-430C and 35-400C respectively. The study revealed a higher competitive potential of weedy rice in terms of tillering ability under elevated carbon dioxide as it responded well compared to cultivated rice varieties. There was a differential response of rice varieties to elevated CO2 conditions with medium duration variety responding well compared to short duration one. Compared to ambient conditions (chamber B and open condition), higher tillering was observed under elevated CO2 (chamber A) in which weedy rice tillered profusely (17.33) than cultivated rice species (9 and 11.33). There was a linear increase in plant height of weedy rice in chamber A (108.97 cm) during the initial stages and in chamber B (112.77 cm) during reproductive stages. The study evidenced that in the coming future, higher CO2 levels can stimulate biomass production of C3 weed like weedy rice with a greater increase in tillering which could be an important trait affecting inter specific competition

    A case study of bilayered spin-1/21/2 square lattice compound [VO(HCOO)2_2\cdot(H2_2O)]

    We present the synthesis and a detail investigation of structural and magnetic properties of polycrystalline [VO(HCOO)2_2\cdot(H2_2O)] by means of x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization, heat capacity, and electron spin resonance measurements. It crystallizes in a orthorhombic structure with space group PccaPcca. It features distorted VO6_6 octahedra connected via HCOO linker (formate anions) forming a two-dimensional square lattice network with a bilayered structure. Analysis of magnetic susceptibility, high field magnetization, and heat capacity data in terms of the frustrated square lattice model unambiguously establish quasi-two-dimensional nature of the compound with nearest neighbour interaction J1/kB11.7J_1/k_{\rm B} \simeq 11.7~K and next-nearest-neighbour interaction J2/kB0.02J_2/k_{\rm B} \simeq 0.02~K. It undergoes a N\'eel antiferromagnetic ordering at TN1.1T_{\rm N} \simeq 1.1~K. The ratio θCW/TN10.9\theta_{\rm CW}/T_{\rm N} \simeq 10.9 reflects excellent two-dimensionality of the spin-lattice in the compound. A strong in-plane anisotropy is inferred from the linear increase of TNT_{\rm N} with magnetic field, consistent with the structural data.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, 1 tabl
