    Changes of benthic macroinvertebrates in Thi Vai River and Cai Mep Estuaries under polluted conditions with industrial wastewater

    The pollution on the Thi Vai River has been spreading out rapidly over the two lasted decades caused by the wastewater from the industrial parks in the left bank of Thi Vai River and Cai Mep Estuaries. The evaluation of the benthic macroinvertebrate changes was very necessary to identify the consequences of the industrial wastewater on water quality and aquatic ecosystem of Thi Vai River and Cai Mep Estuaries. In this study, the variables of benthic macroinvertebrates and water quality were investigated in Thi Vai River and Cai Mep Estuaries, Southern Vietnam. The monitoring data of benthic macroinvertebrates and water quality parameters covered the period from 1989 to 2015 at 6 sampling sites in Thi Vai River and Cai Mep Estuaries. The basic water quality parameters were also tested including pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), total nitrogen, and total phosphorus. The biodiversity indices of benthic macroinvertebrates were applied for water quality assessment. The results showed that pH ranged from 6.4 – 7.6 during the monitoring. The DO concentrations were in between 0.20 – 6.70 mg/L. The concentrations of total nitrogen and total phosphorous ranged from 0.03 – 5.70 mg/L 0.024 – 1.380 mg/L respectively. Macroinvertebrate community in the study area consisted of 36 species of polychaeta, gastropoda, bivalvia, and crustacea, of which, species of polychaeta were dominant in species number. The benthic macroinvertebartes density ranged from 0 – 2.746 individuals/m2 with the main dominant species of Neanthes caudata, Prionospio malmgreni, Paraprionospio pinnata, Trichochaeta carica, Maldane sarsi, Capitella capitata, Terebellides stroemi, Euditylia polymorpha, Grandidierella lignorum, Apseudes vietnamensis. The biodiversity index values during the monitoring characterized for aquatic environmental conditions of mesotrophic to polytrophic. Besides, species richness positively correlated with DO, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus. The results confirmed the advantage of using benthic macroinvertebrates and their indices for water quality assessment

    Generation of plasmon-polaritons in epsilon-near-zero polaritonic metamaterial

    In this paper, we study the generation of plasmon-polaritons in the epsilon-near-zero nanorod polaritonic metamaterial by using nonlocal effective medium approximation (EMT). The results indicate that the nonlocal EMT is the simplest and most accurate approach to describe the characteristics of plasmon-polaritons at the epsilon-near-zero regime (e ≈ 0) in the polaritonic metamaterial. In contrast, the Maxwell-Garnett effective medium approximation is considered to be the most general method to study the generated plasmon-polaritons in metamaterials. An additional plasmon-polariton is found in the polaritonic metamaterial through the nonlocal EMT, which could not be found with the Maxwell-Garnett EMT. A flat longitudinal wave-number of the excited plasmon-polariton occurs in the angle of incident light ranging from –20 to 20°, leading to the collinear group-velocity vectors, and its energy will be carried in one direction. The findings can be used in some applications in optical communication

    The Impact of Overfitting and Overgeneralization on the Classification Accuracy in Data Mining

    Current classification approaches usually do not try to achieve a balance between fitting and generalization when they infer models from training data. Such approaches ignore the possibility of different penalty costs for the false-positive, false-negative, and unclassifiable types. Thus, their performances may not be optimal or may even be coincidental. This dissertation analyzes the above issues in depth. It also proposes two new approaches called the Homogeneity-Based Algorithm (HBA) and the Convexity-Based Algorithm (CBA) to address these issues. These new approaches aim at optimally balancing the data fitting and generalization behaviors of models when some traditional classification approaches are used. The approaches first define the total misclassification cost (TC) as a weighted function of the three penalty costs and their corresponding error rates. The approaches then partition the training data into regions. In the HBA, the partitioning is done according to some homogeneous properties derivable from the training data. Meanwhile, the CBA employs some convex properties to derive regions. A traditional classification method is then used in conjunction with the HBA and CBA. Finally, the approaches apply a genetic approach to determine the optimal levels of fitting and generalization. The TC serves as the fitness function in this genetic approach. Real-life datasets from a wide spectrum of domains were used to better understand the effectiveness of the HBA and CBA. The computational results have indicated that both the HBA and CBA might potentially fill a critical gap in the implementation of current or future classification approaches. Furthermore, the results have also shown that when the penalty cost of an error type was changed, the corresponding error rate followed stepwise patterns. The finding of stepwise patterns of classification errors can assist researchers in determining applicable penalties for classification errors. Thus, the dissertation also proposes a binary search approach (BSA) to produce those patterns. Real-life datasets were utilized to demonstrate for the BSA

    Effects of platelet-rich plasma on human gingival fibroblast proliferation and migration in vitro

    Objective: This study evaluated the influence of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on the behaviour of human gingival fibroblasts (hGFs), including fibroblast proliferation, migration and colony formation. Methods: PRP was obtained from the human peripheral blood of a healthy volunteer and then was diluted into platelet concentrations of 1%, 2% and 5%. The proliferation of hGFs was determined by two methods: (1) Cell-number counting with a haemocytometer method at days 1, 3, 5 and 7; (2) Colony-forming unit-fibroblast (CFU-F) assay at 2 weeks. The migration of hGFs was evaluated with scratch assay, then recorded digital images were analysed by Image-Analysis J 1.51j8 software to compare the remaining artificial wound areas between PRP groups at 0, 24 and 48 hours. Results: All hGFs that were cultivated in media with 1%, 2% and 5% PRP showed their ability to proliferate and migrate. Cell numbers incubated with 1% PRP increased significantly during the first three days and peaked at day 5, tending to be similar to their proliferation in complete medium. With concentrations of 2% and 5% PRP, hGFs outgrew and peaked at day 3, which was faster than with those in medium with 1% PRP. Especially, hGFs in the group 5% PRP proliferated with higher cell numbers than those in the other remaining groups at day 3. The hGF colony number that was formed in the group 5% PRP was significantly higher than those in the groups 1% and 2% PRP. Scratch assay showed hGFs in the groups 2% and 5% PRP almost filled the artificial wound and migrated more effectively than in the group 1% PRP at 24 hours, which was significant. Conclusion:In this study, perhaps the medium with 5% PRP is the dominant option, promoting the abilities of hGFs to heal wounds, because of its fast and effective impact on cell proliferation, colony formation and migration
