    The new urban paradigm

    Get PDF
This paper argues in favor of a new urban model that harnesses the power that cities have to curb global warming. Such a model tackles fundamental management challenges in the energy, building and transport sectors to promote the growth of diverse and compact cities. Such a model is essential for meeting complex challenges in cities, such as promoting a cohesive social life and a competitive economic base while simultaneously preserving agricultural and natural systems crucial to soil, energy, and material resources. With most of the population living in urban areas, the G20 should recognize the key role that cities play in addressing global challenges such as climate change. Improved measures taken by cities should be an indispensable solution. The G20 Development Working Group, Climate Sustainability Working Group, and Energy Transitions Working Group should incorporate an urban approach to discussions related to climate change.Fil: Lanfranchi, Gabriel. The CI-ASD Program: Implementation of Contextual Interventions for Autism Spectrum Disorder (CI-ASD) with Latino Families (Preliminary Report)

    Get PDF
Children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience sensory processing differences that affect their participation in daily activities and routines. Autism affects an estimated 1 in 36 children in the U.S. However, Latino children are diagnosed two years later than white children. Latino families still have the greatest disparities in accessing ASD resources throughout the U.S. compared to white families. The lack of ASD services and resources led to decreased parental self-efficacy, quality of life, and increased child behavioral problems. Contextual Interventions Adapted for Autism Spectrum Disorder (CI-ASD) are an emerging intervention for occupational therapy (OT) practitioners. Recent literature shows improvement in child participation and parental self-efficacy when combining sensory processing knowledge with a coaching approach within a family-centered context. While some evidence supports the application of CI-ASD in improving children\u27s participation and promoting a sense of efficacy, this intervention has not been implemented within the Latino Community. The purpose of this capstone was to examine the following research questions: Does CI-ASD increase the quality of life in Latino Families? Does CI-ASD promote Latino parenting sense of efficacy? Does CI-ASD promote children\u27s participation in Latino family activities and routines?https://soar.usa.edu/otdcapstonesspring2024/1072/thumbnail.jp

Adaptive Waveforms for Flow Velocity Estimation Using Acoustic Signals

    No full text
International audienceIn this paper, we introduce a general framework for waveform design and signal processing, dedicated to the study of turbulent flow phenomena. In a bi-static configuration, by transmitting a specific waveform with a predefined instantaneous frequency law (IFL), within the bounds of the Kolmogorov spectrum, the turbulent media will modify the IFL at the receiving side. We propose a new methodology to estimate this change and to exploit it for velocity estimation using acoustic signals. In this way, the amplitude based velocity estimation techniques can be substituted by non stationary time - frequency signal processing. This technique proves to be more robust in terms of interferences and can provide a more detailed representation of any turbulent environment

Forelimb kinematics during swimming in the pig-nosed turtle, Carettochelys insculpta, compared with other turtle taxa: rowing versus flapping, convergenceversus intermediacy

Animals that swim using appendages do so by way of rowing and/or flapping motions. Often considered discrete categories, rowing and flapping are more appropriately regarded as points along a continuum. The pig-nosed turtle, Carettochelys insculpta, is unusual in that it is the only freshwater turtle to have limbs modified into flippers and swim via synchronous forelimb motions that resemble dorsoventral flapping, traits that evolved independently from their presence in sea turtles. We used high-speed videography to quantify forelimb kinematics in C. insculpta and a closely related, highly aquatic rower (Apalone ferox). Comparisons of our new data with those previously collected for a generalized freshwater rower (Trachemys scripta) and a flapping sea turtle (Caretta caretta) allow us to: (1) more precisely quantify and characterize the range of limb motions used by flappers versus rowers, and (2) assess whether the synchronous forelimb motions of C. insculpta can be classified as flapping (i.e. whether they exhibit forelimb kinematics and angles of attack more similar to closely related rowing species or more distantly related flapping sea turtles). We found that the forelimb kinematics of previously recognized rowers (T. scripta and A. ferox) were most similar to each other, but that those of C. insculpta were more similar to rowers than to flapping C. caretta. Nevertheless, of the three freshwater species, C. insculpta was most similar to flapping C. caretta. ‘Flapping’ in C. insculpta is achieved through humeral kinematics very different from those in C. caretta, with C. insculpta exhibiting significantly more anteroposterior humeral motion and protraction, and significantly less dorsoventral humeral motion and depression. Based on several intermediate kinematic parameters and angle of attack data, C. insculpta may in fact represent a synchronous rower or hybrid rower-flapper, suggesting that traditional views of C. insculpta as a flapper should be revised

Electric Arc Locator in Photovoltaic Power Systems Using Advanced Signal Processing Techniques

    No full text
International audienceIn this paper, we present two techniques for the localization of electric arcs produced in photovoltaic power systems. High order statistic analysis (HOSA) and recurrence plot analysis (RPA) have already proven successful in detecting the partial discharges associated with the production of an electric arc in a high voltage power system. However, this solves only the first half of the problem, since a localization of the arc also needed. Using a four sensors array detector along with a combination of HOSA and RPA techniques, we estimate the direction of arrival (DOA) of the electric arc, as well as the distance to the detector. An experiment was put in place in order to validate the results

Participatory governance is a democratic process intended to involve citizens in the management of public institution. By providing them platforms through which they can access the government, transparency and accountability in public governance is enhanced.  The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) acknowledges its importance through the establishment of different platforms of communications wherein clients can raise their concerns.  The study aims at   describing and evaluating the Complaints Management Program of the DPWH Nueva Ecija 2nd District Engineering Office based in Cabanatuan City. The analysis was drawn from Fifteen (15) client feedbacks received in 2017.  The   data were gathered using qualitative and quantitative approaches while multi-stakeholders framework for complaint management was adapted to measure the effectiveness of the feedback and complaint management mechanisms of the agency. The study  found that the agency : a)  institutionalizes and observes procedures in handling complaints; b) resolves complaints based on the principles of fairness, accessibility, responsiveness, efficiency , trust and citizens participation; however, there are limitations identified in regard to the administrative support in terms of  personnel assigned, training and availability of vehicle  use to verify various complaints on the ground. Civic engagement is an effective tool to promote democracy and enhance open government. They are proven to create enabling   environment  that tends to yield positive   political outcomes and policy implementation results.
