From church religiousness to spirituality : the transformation of religion in the early 21st century
Social development leads to increased autonomy of the individual areas of social life. Each of
them becomes a kind of individuality, specificity and independence of the others in their respective
functions. This situation is also reflected in the sphere of religious life. In contemporary
societies there is a lack a unambiguous compliance to religious and social norms as the religious
monopoly to a particular religious confession was broken. Religion in a pluralistic society
is changing in its function. One of the key approaches describing the transformations associated
with the sphere of religious experiences are the theories of secularization. Currently, secularism
is no longer understood as simply the disappearance of religion, and more often the specific
changes that occur in the sacrum.
It may be stated that in the reality of contemporary Poland, the traditional religious practices,
which can be referred to as church religiousness, is still dominative. It should be noted,
however, that new forms of religious activities are more and more highlighted. While there has
not been a radical transformation of religious attitudes, there has been a strong shift towards
spirituality
Significant others or burden? The role and place of seniors in contemporary families in Poland
"As the term global aging correctly implies, nearly every country in the world
is expected to experience some shift toward slower population growth and an
older age structure. This does not mean, however, that the world is demographically
converging.
In modern societies where you can observe various types of intergenerational
solidarity and social help, the elders are not only the recipients but they
are also giving. For example, the need for people who could provide care for
children increased with the number of working women. Since not every family
in the society has sufficient income to send their kids to kindergartens, some
grandmothers support younger generations by taking care of their grandchildren.
Moreover, it is a fact that some elders support younger generations
financially." [...] (fragm.
Tradycja czy nowoczesność? Młodzi mieszkańcy Górnego Śląska a fundamenty świata wartości
Contemporary world offers a far-reaching variety of ideologies, philosophies and possibilities
of living. At the same time, there is no guarantee when it comes to universality and inviolability
of any kind of moral values. This situation becomes the source of anxiety and even violent
existential conflicts. Ever stronger individualisation and deinstitutionalization processes cause people
(youth in particular) to face the whole range of serious challenges.
We could risk the thesis that a new mentality of the young generation is being formed and developed
on the basis of contemporary social, political, economic and cultural transformations. Technical
and technological progress results in a situation, that the youth and adolescence is significantly
different nowadays from the youth of today’s adults.
The future of the young generation is then questionable. In the conditions of the risk society
nobody can be sure of their future. Hence, the questions about constant points of reference which let
us not to loose orientation in this complicated reality become more and more important.
This article analyses the foundations of axionormative systems possible to be identified among
young inhabitants of Upper Silesia. Thanks to the analysis of the specificity related to young people’s
world of values, we can come closer to answer the question about the location of today’s youth
on the tradition-modernity axis. It seems that reflexion of this type can not only throw light on the
situation of Silesian young people, but it also allows for careful conclusions in relation to all young

Trzymając telewizyjnego pilota, czy ściskając kierownicę roweru? : sposoby spędzania czasu wolnego w przestrzeni miasta późnonowoczesnego na przykładzie Katowic
The present time can be defined by means of the epoch of choices. The contemporary reality is
amazingly pluralist in all practical dimensions of life. In modern societies we also deal with a particular
paradox with respect to time — on the one hand, it is organized according to an objective academic
model and, on the other, it splits into different time cultures every day. A new selected sphere of
human time, leisure time, undergoes division. What appears are new needs and, at the same time,
institutions which satisfy them in a different way: a service, educational and recreational one. The
former homogenous human action is being split into many separated and isolated “times”.
Considering the issue of free time from the sociological perspective, it is legitimate to assume
that ways of spending leisure time are inscribed into fairly visible cultural patterns which within years
are subject to dynamics. It is their identification in reference to the social space of Katowice that
became the subject‑matter
of the very article. It presents the results of the studies conducted in July
and August 2007 on the sample of 492 adult inhabitants of Katowice.
In the context of the issues dealt with, several questions arise: How do inhabitants of Katowice
use their free time? Do the forms connected with the physical activity or rather passive rest dominate?
How much time do they devote to the Internet and television? What is the activeness of the respondents
in their free time when it comes to culture? As a predominant analytical perspective served an
attempt to answer the question if the changes connected with a more and more common trend on the
so called healthy lifestyle or a growing pressure on the creation of the cultural wealth, also affect the
ways of spending leisure time.
In view of a big social, economic and spacious diversification, the area of Katowice is extremely
interesting research area of the very problem among the contemporary inhabitants of a big city
Zaspokajanie głodu czy zdrowe odżywianie? : modele konsumpcji
Konsumpcja staje się swoistym epicentrum kształtującym życie społeczne
i kulturowe uniwersum. Tomasz Szlendak podkreśla, że w coraz
większym stopniu sfery życia ludzkiego ulegają wzorom postępowania
charakterystycznym dla rynku. Stwierdza on, że zachowania ludzi ulegają
trendów współczesności i wyznaczników ponowoczesności. Coraz częściej
niewystarczające w odniesieniu do roli i znaczenia konsumpcji okazuje
i ekonomicznych gospodarstw domowych poziomy i struktury spożycia
o wewnętrznym systemie związków i zależności.
Próba uchwycenia takich prawidłowości, opis pewnych widocznych
modeli konsumpcji, przede wszystkim w odniesieniu do sfery spożywczej,
i spełniania podstawowych funkcji, współczesna rodzina stanowi
wielu innych dyscyplin naukowych. Niektórzy z nich wskazują na
pozytywne zmiany modelu rodziny, inni odsłaniają liczne przejawy
wzajemnego ulokowania i powiązań łączących jej członków. Ten układ
elementów wpływa znacząco właściwie na wszystkie aspekty funkcjonowania
tej podstawowej grupy społecznej
Artesian origin of a cave developed in an isolated horst : a case of Smocza Jama (Kraków Upland, Poland)
The cave of Smocza Jama located in the centre of Kraków is developed in the Wawel Horst built of Upper Jurassic limestone and surrounded by grabens with Miocene clays. The cave is composed of two series: the old one has been known for ages and the new one was discovered when an artificial shaft was mined in 1974. The new series comprises small chambers separated by intervening thin walls while the old series consists of three connected together spatial chambers. The cave abounds in extensively developed solution cavities – cupolas and ceiling pockets. The internal fine-grained deposits, predominantly representing clay fraction are built of illite, mixed layer illite-smectite, kaolinite and iron oxides. They are probably the residuum after dissolution of Jurassic limestone. The cave originated in phreatic condition due to water input from below. The new series represents juvenile stage of cave evolution. The water rose through fissure-rifts located in chamber bottoms, circulated convectionally within particular chambers, finally led to bleaching of intervening walls, and hence to connection of the neighbouring chambers. The evolution of the old series is far more advanced. The rounded solution cavities imply that the cave was formed by water of elevated temperature. The lack of coarse-grained fluvial deposits, Pleistocene mammal remains and Palaeolithic artefacts prove that the cave was isolated since its inception till Holocene time. The cave originated due to artesian circulation, when the Wawel Horst was covered by imper- meable Miocene clays. A foreland basin with carbonate basement, filled with fine-grained molasse-type deposits seems to be particularly favourable for the development of artesian caves
Sociologizing corruption risk : organizational, agential and cultural determinants of public sector malfeasance
podmiotowością jednostek a strukturalno-systemowymi wymiarami życia społecznego.

Peculiar calcite speleothems filling fissures in calcareous sandstones and their palaeohydrological and palaeoclimatic significance : an example from the Polish Carpathians
Peculiar calcite speleothems developed in fissures in the Cergowa Sandstones were found in the Klęczany Quarry (Polish Western Carpathians). They represent flowstone and stalactites, rafts and various sparry crusts. Such speleothems, especially phreatic ones, are uncommon in the Outer Carpathians that are composed mainly of siliciclastic rocks of flysch type, with only limited calcium carbonate content. The speleothems analysed grew in vadose and phreatic conditions as well as at the air-water interface. Phreatic speleothems and thin rafts comprise calcite crystals of eccentric morphology. Based on their stable isotope composition the majority of the speleothems form two clusters. The first is characterized by d18O values between -9.8 and -8.5‰ and of d13C values between -5.7 and -0.6‰ whereas the second cluster of samples yields d18O values between -9.4 and -7.3‰ and d13C values from -11.5 to -9.7‰. Speleothems grew between 230+14-13 ka and Holocene time. Phreatic speleothems, including massive rafts, precipitated from ascending water of deep circulation whereas vadose and water table speleothems crystallized from local infiltration water charged with soil CO2. Mixing of both waters in the shallow phreatic zone is plausible
Religiousness and lifestyles : a sociological study of slovak families
Dans le chapitre « Cohabitation. An informal Lifestyle » (Cohabitation.
d’unions libres.
An
comportements religieux.
Le chapitre « Patterns of Everyday Life Characterizing Christina Families in the
