    Recycling carbon fibre with an acetone/water solvent and zinc chloride catalyst: resin degradation and fibre characterisation

    The degradation of a carbon fibre reinforced epoxy resin with an acetone/water mixture and ZnCl2 catalyst was investigated. The solvent/catalyst system achieved a resin removal yield in excess of 94% after 1.5 h at 290°C and 45 min at 300°C. Single fibre tensile testing indicated an increase in fibre strength after the recycling process. The strongest fibres were recovered using a reaction temperature of 290°C and exhibited a strength of 3.21 ± 1.10 GPa. The technique developed therefore appears to recover high quality fibres while reducing the temperature by 30°C and process time by 25% when compared to earlier work

    Pulmonary vascular resistance after cardiopulmonary bypass in infants: Effect on postoperative recovery

    AbstractObjective: We sought to define the contemporary clinical effect of increased pulmonary vascular resistance in infants after congenital heart operations with cardiopulmonary bypass. Methods: Fifteen infants (median age, 0.31 years; median weight, 5.1 kg) underwent cardiac operations involving cardiopulmonary bypass (range, 49-147 minutes). Pulmonary vascular resistance was measured in the immediate postoperative period in the intensive care unit by means of the direct Fick principle, with respiratory mass spectrometry to measure oxygen consumption. The effect of ventilation with an inspired oxygen fraction of 0.65, with additional infusion of L -arginine, substance P, and inhaled nitric oxide, was assessed and subsequently correlated with the length of mechanical ventilation from the end of cardiopulmonary bypass to successful extubation. Results: Overall, pulmonary vascular resistance at baseline (11.7 ± 5.6 WU · m2) could be reduced to a minimum of 6.1 ± 3.5 WU · m2. The ventilatory time was 0.86 to 14.9 days (median, 1.75 days) and correlated directly with the lowest pulmonary vascular resistance value achieved during the pulmonary vascular resistance study (r 2 = 0.64, P <.01). The patient subgroup with mechanical ventilation of greater than 2 days had significantly higher pulmonary vascular resistance at all stages of the study protocol, and in this group there was a correlation of cardiopulmonary bypass time and ventilatory support time (r 2 = 0.48, P <.05). Conclusion: Increased pulmonary vascular resistance, either directly or as a surrogate of the systemic inflammatory response after cardiopulmonary bypass, continues to have a significant effect on postoperative recovery of infants after cardiac operations.     Approximating Hit Rate Curves using Streaming Algorithms

    A hit rate curve is a function that maps cache size to the proportion of requests that can be served from the cache. (The caching policy and sequence of requests are assumed to be fixed.) Hit rate curves have been studied for decades in the operating system, database and computer architecture communities. They are useful tools for designing appropriate cache sizes, dynamically allocating memory between competing caches, and for summarizing locality properties of the request sequence. In this paper we focus on the widely-used LRU caching policy. Computing hit rate curves is very efficient from a runtime standpoint, but existing algorithms are not efficient in their space usage. For a stream of m requests for n cacheable objects, all existing algorithms that provably compute the hit rate curve use space linear in n. In the context of modern storage systems, n can easily be in the billions or trillions, so the space usage of these algorithms makes them impractical. We present the first algorithm for provably approximating hit rate curves for the LRU policy with sublinear space. Our algorithm uses O( p^2 * log(n) * log^2(m) / epsilon^2 ) bits of space and approximates the hit rate curve at p uniformly-spaced points to within additive error epsilon. This is not far from optimal. Any single-pass algorithm with the same guarantees must use Omega(p^2 + epsilon^{-2} + log(n)) bits of space. Furthermore, our use of additive error is necessary. Any single-pass algorithm achieving multiplicative error requires Omega(n) bits of space

    The endothelin antagonist BQ123 reduces pulmonary vascular resistance after surgical intervention for congenital heart disease

    AbstractObjective: Postoperative pulmonary hypertension in children after surgical intervention for congenital heart disease has been attributed to failure of the pulmonary endothelium to provide adequate vasodilation. Although we have shown that the impaired vasodilatory component attributable to the l-arginine-nitric oxide pathway is almost completely reversible, a nonrestorable component persists, implying an additional vasoconstrictive mechanism in postoperative pulmonary endothelial dysfunction. In this study of children after surgical intervention for congenital heart disease, we measured endothelin-1 levels and used BQ123, a selective endothelin-A receptor antagonist, together with inhaled nitric oxide to discriminate dysfunctional pulmonary endothelial vasodilation from endothelin-mediated pulmonary vasoconstriction. Methods: All children were examined early after surgical intervention in the intensive care unit. Pulmonary vascular resistance (with respiratory mass spectrometry), as well as arterial and venous endothelin-1 levels (measured by means of a quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay), were determined in 7 children (age range, 3.3-13.7 months; median age, 6.3 months) with intracardiac shunting defects at baseline and during ventilation with a fraction of inspired oxygen of 0.65, with additional BQ123 (0.1 mg/kg infused over 20 minutes), and with inhaled nitric oxide (20 ppm). Results: Pulmonary vascular resistance decreased from 7.7 ± 3.4 at baseline to 6.1 ± 2.8 Woods units · m−2 (P =.022) at a fraction of inspired oxygen of 0.65 and to 4.7 ± 2.7 Woods units · m−2 (P =.013) during BQ123 infusion. Inhaled nitric oxide had no further effect on pulmonary vascular resistance. Left atrial endothelin-1 levels (1.35-5.12 pg/mL; mean, 2.4 pg/mL) correlated significantly with the decrease in pulmonary vascular resistance in response to BQ123 infusion (r2 = 0.89, P =.003). Conclusion: Postoperative elevation of pulmonary vascular resistance in children after surgical intervention for congenital heart disease is responsive to endothelin-A blockade with BQ123. Increased levels of endothelin-1 predict the response to this therapy, which might become an important addition to the clinical armamentarium in postoperative pulmonary hypertensive disease.J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg 2002;124:435-4

    An analysis of civil aviation industry safety needs for the introduction of liquid hydrogen propulsion technology

    Over the next few decades air travel is predicted to grow, with international agencies, manufacturers and governments predicting a considerable increase in aviation use. However, based on current fuel type, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) project emissions from aviation are estimated to be seven to ten times higher in 2050 than in 1990. These conflicting needs are problematic and have led to the EU Flightpath 2050 targeting dramatic emissions reductions for the sector (75% CO2, 90% NOX by 2050). One proposed solution, decreasing carbon emissions without stunting the increase in air travel, is hydrogen propulsion; a technology with clear environmental benefits. However, enabling the safe application of this fuel to aviation systems and industrial infrastructure would be a significant challenge. High-profile catastrophic incidents involving hydrogen, and the flammable and cryogenic nature of liquid hydrogen (LH2) have led to its reputation as a more dangerous substance than existing or alternative fuels. But, where they are used (in industry, transport, energy), with sufficient protocols, hydrogen can have a similar level of safety to other fuels. A knowledge of hazards, risks and the management of these becomes key to the integration of any new technology. Using assessments, and a gap analysis approach, this paper examines the civil aviation industry requirements, from a safety perspective, for the introduction of LH2 fuel use. Specific proposed technology assessments are used to analyze incident likelihood, consequence impact, and ease of remediation for hazards in LH2 systems, and a gap analysis approach is utilized to identify if existing data is sufficient for reliable technology safety assessment. Outstanding industry needs are exposed by both examining challenges that have been identified in transport and industrial areas, and by identifying the gaps in current knowledge that are preventing credible assessment, reliable comparison to other fuels and the development of engineering systems. This paper demonstrates that while hydrogen can be a safe and environmentally friendly fuel option, a significant amount of work is required for the implementation of LH2 technology from a mass market perspective

    Measuring the impact of COVID-19 on the quality of life of the survivors, partners and family members: a cross-sectional international online survey

    Objective: This study aimed to measure the impact of COVID-19 on the quality of life (QoL) of survivors and their partners and family members. Design and setting: A prospective cross-sectional global online survey using social media. Participants: Patients with COVID-19 and partners or family members (age ≥18 years). Intervention: Online survey from June to August 2020. Main outcome measure: The EuroQol group five dimensions three level (EQ-5D-3L) to measure the QoL of survivors of COVID-19, and the Family Reported Outcome Measure (FROM-16) to assess the impact on their partner/family member’s QoL. Results: The survey was completed by 735 COVID-19 survivors (mean age=48 years; females=563) at a mean of 12.8 weeks after diagnosis and by 571 partners and 164 family members (n=735; mean age=47 years; females=246) from Europe (50.6%), North America (38.5%) and rest of the world (10.9%). The EQ-5D mean score for COVID-19 survivors was 8.65 (SD=1.9, median=9; range=6–14). 81.1% (596/735) reported pain and discomfort, 79.5% (584/735) problems with usual activities, 68.7% (505/735) anxiety and depression and 56.2% (413/735) problems with mobility.     A framework for assessing impacts of wild meat hunting practices in the Tropics

    Terrestrial wildlife is being hunted for consumption by humans in the tropics at an unprecedented rate, and the often unsustainable nature of this harvest has profound implications not only for biodiversity and ecosystem function, but also for human livelihoods. Whilst the nature and impacts of this practice have been studied in numerous contexts and localities, a comprehensive treatment of the social, economic, and environmental determinants of both hunter decision-making and hunting outcomes has been lacking. In this review we discuss influences of hunting methods and effort on the types of animals caught, the efficiency of harvest, and the implications of these factors for sustainability. We highlight gaps in current understanding, and identify the most important data requirements. Our approach provides a framework for the design of future studies into wild meat hunting and its impacts, promoting the efficient targeting of priority areas of research
