The long-term prognostic significance of 6-minute walk test distance in patients with chronic heart failure
Background. The 6-minute walk test (6-MWT) is used to assess patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). The prognostic significance of the 6-MWT distance during long-term followup ( > 5 years) is unclear. Methods. 1,667 patients (median [inter-quartile range, IQR]) (age 72 [65-77] ; 75% males) with heart failure due to left ventricular systolic impairment undertook a 6-MWT as part of their baseline assessment and were followed up for 5 years. Results. At 5 years' followup, those patients who died (n = 959) were older at baseline and had a higher log NT pro-BNP than those who survived to 5 years (n = 708). 6-MWT distance was lower in those who died [163 (153) m versus 269 (160) m; P 360 m. 6-MWT distance was a predictor of all-cause mortality (HR 0.97; 95% CI 0.96-0.97; Chi-square = 184.1; P < 0.0001). Independent predictors of all-cause mortality were decreasing 6-MWT distance, increasing age, increasing NYHA classification, increasing log NT pro-BNP, decreasing diastolic blood pressure, decreasing sodium, and increasing urea. Conclusion. The 6-MWT is an important independent predictor of all-cause mortality following long-term followup in patients with CHF. © 2014 Lee Ingle et al
Electronic Quantum Monte Carlo Calculations of Atomic Forces, Vibrations, and Anharmonicities
Atomic forces are calculated for first-row monohydrides and carbon monoxide
within electronic quantum Monte Carlo (QMC). Accurate and efficient forces are
achieved by using an improved method for moving variational parameters in
variational QMC. Newton's method with singular value decomposition (SVD) is
combined with steepest descent (SD) updates along directions rejected by the
SVD, after initial SD steps. Dissociation energies in variational and diffusion
QMC agree well with experiment. The atomic forces agree quantitatively with
potential energy surfaces, demonstrating the accuracy of this force procedure.
The harmonic vibrational frequencies and anharmonicity constants, derived from
the QMC energies and atomic forces, also agree well with experimental values.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures; updated conten
Multilingual Vandalism Detection Using Language-Independent & Ex Post Facto Evidence
There is much literature on Wikipedia vandalism detection. However, this writing addresses two facets given little treatment to date. First, prior efforts emphasize zero-delay detection, classifying edits the moment they are made. If classification can be delayed (e.g., compiling offline distributions), it is possible to leverage ex post facto evidence. This work describes/evaluates several features of this type, which we find to be overwhelmingly strong vandalism indicators.
Second, English Wikipedia has been the primary test-bed for research. Yet, Wikipedia has 200+ language editions and use of localized features impairs portability. This work implements an extensive set of language-independent indicators and evaluates them using three corpora (German, English, Spanish). The work then extends to include language-specific signals. Quantifying their performance benefit, we find that such features can moderately increase classifier accuracy, but significant effort and language fluency are required to capture this utility.
Aside from these novel aspects, this effort also broadly addresses the task, implementing 65 total features. Evaluation produces 0.840 PR-AUC on the zero-delay task and 0.906 PR-AUC with ex post facto evidence (averaging languages). Performance matches the state-of-the-art (English), sets novel baselines (German, Spanish), and is validated by a first-place finish over the 2011 PAN-CLEF test set

Dynamic Influence Networks for Rule-based Models
We introduce the Dynamic Influence Network (DIN), a novel visual analytics
technique for representing and analyzing rule-based models of protein-protein
interaction networks. Rule-based modeling has proved instrumental in developing
biological models that are concise, comprehensible, easily extensible, and that
mitigate the combinatorial complexity of multi-state and multi-component
biological molecules. Our technique visualizes the dynamics of these rules as
they evolve over time. Using the data produced by KaSim, an open source
stochastic simulator of rule-based models written in the Kappa language, DINs
provide a node-link diagram that represents the influence that each rule has on
the other rules. That is, rather than representing individual biological
components or types, we instead represent the rules about them (as nodes) and
the current influence of these rules (as links). Using our interactive DIN-Viz
software tool, researchers are able to query this dynamic network to find
meaningful patterns about biological processes, and to identify salient aspects
of complex rule-based models. To evaluate the effectiveness of our approach, we
investigate a simulation of a circadian clock model that illustrates the
oscillatory behavior of the KaiC protein phosphorylation cycle.Comment: Accepted to TVCG, in pres
Improving Agricultural Irrigation on the Balkhab River, Afghanistan
In Afghanistan, where 80% of the population is rural, irrigated agriculture is important for satisfying subsistence needs. While most of the irrigated agriculture is fed by diversion canal systems which tap surface flows, legal and physical water infrastructure in the region is generally poor. A math programming model is used to optimize irrigation strategies under different water-availability and policy scenarios. It is found that the construction of a reservoir could increase net revenues to a representative farming community by up to 30%. However, even greater benefits may result from increasing distribution efficiencies, depending on the initial level of conveyance losses. Further, property rights schemes may be implemented to distribute wealth more evenly through various zones at minimal cost to the agricultural community as a whole. These results may prove useful to policymakers or water authorities in reestablishing water rights.linear programming, irrigation, Afghanistan, Agricultural and Food Policy, Community/Rural/Urban Development, International Development,
Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Wikipedia Metadata and the STiki Anti-Vandalism Tool
The bulk of Wikipedia anti-vandalism tools require natural language processing over the article or diff text. However, our prior work demonstrated the feasibility of using spatio-temporal properties to locate malicious edits. STiki is a real-time, on-Wikipedia tool leveraging this technique.
The associated poster reviews STiki\u27s methodology and performance. We find competing anti-vandalism tools inhibit maximal performance. However, the tool proves particularly adept at mitigating long-term embedded vandalism. Further, its robust and language-independent nature make it well-suited for use in less-patrolled Wiki installations
Development of a composite model derived from cardiopulmonary exercise tests to predict mortality risk in patients with mild-to-moderate heart failure
Objective: Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is used to predict outcome in patients with mild-to-moderate heart failure (HF). Single CPET-derived variables are often used, but we wanted to see if a composite score achieved better predictive power. Methods: Retrospective analysis of patient records at the Department of Cardiology, Castle Hill Hospital, Kingston-upon-Hull. 387 patients [median (25th-75th percentile)] [age 65 (56-72) years; 79% males; LVEF 34 (31-37) %] were included. Patients underwent a symptomlimited, maximal CPET on a treadmill. During a median follow up of 8.6 ± 2.1 years in survivors, 107 patients died. Survival models were built and validated using a hybrid approach between the bootstrap and Cox regression. Nine CPET-derived variables were included. Z-score defined each variable's predictive strength. Model coefficients were converted to a risk score. Results: Four CPET-related variables were independent predictors of all-cause mortality in the survival model: the presence of exertional oscillatory ventilation (EOV), increasing slope of the relation between ventilation and carbon dioxide production (VE/VCO2 slope), decreasing oxygen uptake efficiency slope (OUES), and an increase in the lowest ventilatory equivalent for carbon dioxide (VEqCO2 nadir). Individual predictors of mortality ranged from 0.60 to 0.71 using Harrell’s C-statistic, but the optimal combination of EOV + VE/VCO2 slope + OUES + VEqCO2 nadir reached 0.75. The Hull CPET risk score had a significantly higher area under the curve (0.78) when compared to the Heart Failure Survival Score (AUC=0.70;
