High compliance all-terrain transport and heavy cargo hybrid bicycle
Thesis (S.B.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2006.Includes bibliographical references. This research involved the design and manufacture of a prototype for a hybrid bicycle system. The design called for a vehicle capable of being used in a mode where normal bicycle operation is possible while being reconfigurable into a cargo carrying configuration where both wheels are coaxial. The simplification of the process by which the device could change from one mode to the other and the robustness of the system as a whole were set as primary design criteria. This design would allow for the transportation of individuals and cargo under varying situations, including the evacuation of a wounded individual when in cargo mode. The success of the prototype proved the value of the concept and its possible applications in military, urban, and outdoor environments. Testing also showed that further research into refining the cargo transports driving dynamics and the manufacturing of the most critical components is merited.by Andreas Pino ; in collaboration with Orlando Soto.S.B
BClass: A Bayesian Approach Based on Mixture Models for Clustering and Classification of Heterogeneous Biological Data
Based on mixture models, we present a Bayesian method (called BClass) to classify biological entities (e.g. genes) when variables of quite heterogeneous nature are analyzed. Various statistical distributions are used to model the continuous/categorical data commonly produced by genetic experiments and large-scale genomic projects. We calculate the posterior probability of each entry to belong to each element (group) in the mixture. In this way, an original set of heterogeneous variables is transformed into a set of purely homogeneous characteristics represented by the probabilities of each entry to belong to the groups. The number of groups in the analysis is controlled dynamically by rendering the groups as 'alive' and 'dormant' depending upon the number of entities classified within them. Using standard Metropolis-Hastings and Gibbs sampling algorithms, we constructed a sampler to approximate posterior moments and grouping probabilities. Since this method does not require the definition of similarity measures, it is especially suitable for data mining and knowledge discovery in biological databases. We applied BClass to classify genes in RegulonDB, a database specialized in information about the transcriptional regulation of gene expression in the bacterium Escherichia coli. The classification obtained is consistent with current knowledge and allowed prediction of missing values for a number of genes. BClass is object-oriented and fully programmed in Lisp-Stat. The output grouping probabilities are analyzed and interpreted using graphical (dynamically linked plots) and query-based approaches. We discuss the advantages of using Lisp-Stat as a programming language as well as the problems we faced when the data volume increased exponentially due to the ever-growing number of genomic projects.
Global megatrends that challenge Latin America
This working paper presents the main challenges that Latin America will face in the coming years, within a global context of greater fragmentation, conflict, and disorder, known as "Cold Peace". Over a medium and long-term time horizon, it is possible to identify 5 megatrends: climate change and energy, new technological developments, population, inequality and emerging middle classes, and urban development. The region should avoid the risk of irrelevance and isolation, especially in the face of the geopolitical and economic transition towards Asia as the new center of gravity. Therefore, Latin America needs to enhance its capacity to influence and to address the most critical issues such as creation of wealth and prosperity, peace and social inclusion, and productivit

Determining the Predictors for Cardiac Etiology on Syncope Patients in the ED
Introduction: Syncope remains one of the most challenging presentations to the ED physician as well as the Internist. The goal of this study is to determine which combination of variables during the clinical encounter at bed side can better predict among all patients presenting to the ED with syncope who is likely to have a cardiac diagnosis and who is not.
Methods: A retrospective chart review was done on a random sample of cases presenting to the emergency department of a Miami hospital between 2014 and 2016.
Results: The final regression model showed male patients being 3 times more likely to have a cardiac final diagnosis for syncope than women. There is a 5% increased chance of having a cardiac etiology per year increment between these groups. Palpitations occurring with the event and a personal history of coronary artery disease multiplied the odds of a cardiac diagnosis 24.43 times and 3.63 times respectively. Bradycardia or a prolonged QRS segment (\u3e120ms) multiplied the odds of a cardiac diagnosis by 4.24 times and 5.06 times respectively. Valvular stenosis on cardiac echography multiplied the odds of having a cardiac diagnosis by a factor of 7.35. ROC curve was calculated to be 0.901. Creating a model excluding the result of the cardiac echography yielded a ROC curve with an area under the curve of 0.895.
Conclusion: Syncope has a variety of etiologies some of which are benign in nature like Orthostasis, others carry a high risk of severe detrimental consequences like cardiac arrhythmias. Thus, it is imperative to differentiate those patients with a potential of having a life-threatening diagnosis from those that do not. The cardiac model developed during this study showed great potential for development of a stratification risk tool for cardiac diagnosis for patients presenting with a syncopal episode to the ED
Today's world needs to have much faster access to information, global communication is the strategy that should be used for multicultural exchange, that is why the process carried out by the Fundación Universitaria los Libertadores with the Global Citizenship Chair and Human rights allows linking cultures of 3 countries in a virtual connection. SEDENTARISMO, ESPORTE E A PRESSÃO BIOPOLÍTICA POR UMA VIDA SAUDÁVEL: ANÁLISE DO DISCURSO DO PROGRAMA “ESCOLHA UMA VIDA SAUDÁVEL”, DO CHILE
It is increasingly common to hear governmental authorities commenting on the proper way to “live well” or how to “live healthy”. The so-called Choose to Live Healthy Law (Elige Vivir Sano, EVS) was created in Chile in 2013. It proposes cultural change for the population by advancing sport and physical activity as health promoters. Under a biopolitics and governmentality framework, this study uses discourse analysis to understand several official documents that build the EVS discourse. The results show that the EVS discursive construction promotes individualization of health care while advancing sport and physical activity in line with neoliberal ideology. It also discusses spare time and material conditions may allow a healthy life or not.
