Barriers for highly qualified A8 immigrants in the UK labour market

    Get PDF
The number of migrants arriving in the UK from the EU accession countries has been higher than projected. The evidence indicates that they have been over-represented in low-paid and low-skilled jobs. This is arguably transitory and there should be good prospects of upward mobility. Over-qualification among A8 migrants, measured using the Annual Population Survey data, is examined in this article. The findings show that A8 migrants have been subject to migration penalties at the high end of the UK labour market. There are persistent labour market disadvantages for A8 migrants in the UK and their over-qualification may be a long-term concern

Labour market efficiency and emigration in Slovakia and EU neighbouring countries

Slovakia has experienced a six-year period of decreased labour market efficiency during a post-crisis period and growing emigration flows before and after a post-crisis period. There is also the concurrent issue of the lack of sufficient business activities in the southern, northern and eastern regions, and the economic development of some of the Slovak regions lacks diversification. We have analysed labour market conditions and emigration trends in Slovakia and EU neighbouring countries. The analysis of emigration trends has shown that among EU neighbouring countries, the Slovak migrant population tends to migrate mostly to the Czech Republic. We conducted regression analysis with the use of the ordinary least squares method to identify the main drivers affecting emigration from Slovakia to the Czech Republic as the primary destination country for Slovak migrants. The analysis has revealed that unemployment rates in both countries, labour market regulation which was introduced in the Czech Republic as well as EU enlargement in 2004 are the most significant triggers for emigration in Slovakia. Based on the results obtained, we have discussed possible ways to stimulate economic growth and prevent future emigration from Slovakia

The current paper contributes to the studies devoted to identifying the factors affecting emigration from CEE (Central and Eastern Europe), which are the EU member states to other EU states. In particular, the paper is focused on the factors affecting the emigration of the population from Estonia, Lithuania, Slovenia and Slovakia with Estonian, Lithuanian, Slovenian and Slovak citizenship respectively, to Germany as a destination country with the highest number of migrants among all the EU countries during the period 1998–2016 with the use of fixed effects and OLS estimation methods. The paper contributes to the literature by an empirical analyses of the main economic determinants of emigration from Estonia, Lithuania, Slovenia and Slovakia to Germany
