Benefit Duration and Job Search Effort: Evidence from a Natural Experiment
Findings of prolonged non-employment spells due to more generous unemployment benefits are commonly seen as an indication of reduced job search effort and moral hazard behavior. However, to date, there is hardly any direct evidence of benefit-induced reductions in search effort. This paper exploits quasi-experimental variation in the potential benefit duration in Germany paired with individual-level data on job search behavior to directly investigate this assumed relationship. The results of this study provide substantial support for strategic job search behavior in response to the generosity of the benefit scheme: the extension of the benefit duration caused job search effort to significantly decrease, lowering the number of filed applications and the probability of applying for a job that requires moving. In line with theory, it is shown that the reduction in search effort is accompanied by a significant decrease in the short-run job-finding rate. Instrumental variables estimates further provide causal evidence on the direct relationship between search effort and unemployment duration: a 10 percent increase in the number of filed job applications is found to increase the short-run job-finding probability by 1.3 percentage points
Proactive Quality Guidance for Model Evolution in Model Libraries
Model evolution in model libraries differs from general model evolution. It
limits the scope to the manageable and allows to develop clear concepts,
approaches, solutions, and methodologies. Looking at model quality in evolving
model libraries, we focus on quality concerns related to reusability. In this
paper, we put forward our proactive quality guidance approach for model
evolution in model libraries. It uses an editing-time assessment linked to a
lightweight quality model, corresponding metrics, and simplified reviews. All
of which help to guide model evolution by means of quality gates fostering
model reusability.Comment: 10 pages, figures. Appears in Models and Evolution Workshop

Productivity Effects of Air Pollution: Evidence from Professional Soccer
In this paper, we estimate the causal effect of ambient air pollution on individuals' productivity by using panel data on the universe of professional soccer players in Germany over the period 1999-2011. Combining this data with hourly information on the concentration of particulate matter in spatial proximity to each stadium at the time of kickoff, we exploit exogenous variation in the players' exposure to air pollution due to match scheduling rules that are beyond the control of teams and players. Our analysis shows negative and non-linear effects of air pollution on short-run productivity. We further find that the effect increases with age and is stronger in case players face an additional physical burden
The Long-Term Costs of Government Surveillance: Insights from Stasi Spying in East Germany
Despite the prevalence of government surveillance systems around the world, causal evidence on their social and economic consequences is lacking. Using county-level variation in the number of Stasi informers within Socialist East Germany during the 1980s and accounting for potential endogeneity, we show that more intense regional surveillance led to lower levels of trust and reduced social activity in post-reunification Germany. We also find substantial and long-lasting economic effects of Stasi spying, resulting in lower self-employment, higher unemployment and larger out-migration throughout the 1990s and 2000s. We further show that these effects are due to surveillance and not alternative mechanisms. We argue that our findings have important implications for contemporary surveillance systems

The Economic Costs of Mass Surveillance: Insights from Stasi Spying in East Germany
Based on official records from the former East German Ministry for State Security, we quantify the long-term costs of state surveillance on social capital and economic performance. Using county-level variation in the spy density in the 1980s, we exploit discontinuities at state borders to show that higher levels of Stasi surveillance led to lower levels of social capital as measured by interpersonal and institutional trust in post-reunification Germany. We estimate the economic costs of spying by applying a second identification strategy that accounts for county fixed effects. We find that a higher spy density caused lower self-employment rates, fewer patents per capita, higher unemployment rates and larger population losses throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Overall, our results suggest that the social and economic costs of state surveillance are large and persistent

The long-term costs of government surveillance: insights from Stasi spying in East Germany
We investigate the long-run effects of government surveillance on civic capital and economic performance, studying the case of the Stasi in East Germany. Exploiting regional variation in the number of spies and administrative features of the system, we combine a border discontinuity design with an instrumental variables strategy to estimatethe long-term, post-reunification effect of government surveillance. We find that a higher spying density led to persistently lower levels of interpersonal and institutional trust in post-reunification Germany. We also find substantial and long-lasting economic effectsof Stasi surveillance, resulting in lower income, higher exposure to unemployment, and lower self-employment
Essays on the Economics of the Labor Market
The present dissertation aims at contributing to the understanding of central labor market mechanisms by analyzing open questions on the determinants of firms' labor demand, unemployed individuals' job search behavior and the state's role in shaping peoples' trust and, thereby, affecting labor market outcomes and economic performance
