History and Identity: Pushkin and the Time of Troubles

Get PDF
Russian identity is a complicated subject. Discussions usually revolve around the extent to which Russia can be said to be European or not. The poet Alexander Pushkin, since the time of his death, has been a symbol of Russian identity and is seen to have articulated central components of Russian identity through works such as The Bronze Horseman and Eugene Onegin. However, Pushkin also addressed a critical era in the formation of Russian identity: the Time of Troubles. During this period Russian autocracy was strengthened and serfdom became further entrenched. This thesis will explore Alexander Pushkin’s interpretation of the Time of Troubles

Heart failure nursing in Australia: Challenges, strengths, and opportunities

Get PDF
Australia has a land mass similar to the United States of America, supporting a population of just over 20 million, which is distributed predominantly across the coastal perimeter. The Australian society is rich in cultural diversity fostered by decades of migration. Both these factors present challenges for health care. First, because resources are scare in rural and remote regions, health outcomes are poorer in these regions, especially among indigenous populations. Second, the cultural diversity of Australians is a challenge to providing evidence-based treatment recommendations. In Australia, in parallel with international trends, there is a strong association between socioeconomic status, chronic conditions, and health outcomes

The Limits of the Imaginable : Women Writers\u27 Networks during the Long Nineteenth Century

The rapid rise of the digital humanities over the past decade has transformed literary study, helping scholars to discern broader patterns in print culture and media history. Engaging with methodologies such as data mining, macroanalysis, and network analysis, my Master\u27s Essay utilizes these computational analytics approaches in order to address longstanding critical questions in women\u27s literary history - in particular, how might these tools help us understand the crucial rise of women\u27s networks during the long nineteenth century. To what extent were women\u27s relationship s with fellow female authors important to their success in a male-dominated publishing marketplace, and what new insights are gained from viewing these relationships on a macro-analytic level, rather than simply viewing the individual network or the network of important or canonical writers associated with a particular literary period or movement? In taking a distant approach without privileging canonical authors over others, the macro-network I generated from mining bio-data of nearly 700 women writers becomes a fluid model from which new trails of scholarship can be mapped rather than a stagnant source of evidentiary support for pre-existing arguments. Utilizing networking software to track details of women\u27s interactions with one another my essay reveals several surprising who functioned as crucial nodes in communities of women writers during the long nineteenth century - Joanna Baillie, Geraldine Jewsbury, and Margaret Storm Jameson - and offers an analysis of why this high connectivity has not translated into canonicity. Of course, any database of women writers obscures as much as it reveals about women\u27s experience as participants in gendered publication networks, and my essay closes with analysis and acknowledgement of the archival absences, gaps, and biases of human politics embedded in the data in- and exclusion process encoded within the construction of the Cambridge University\u27s Orlando Project digital database, from which my information was mined

Initial results on an MMSE precoding and equalisation approach to MIMO PLC channels

This paper addresses some initial experiments using polynomial matrix decompositions to construct MMSE precoders and equalisers for MIMO power line communications (PLC) channels. The proposed scheme is based on a Wiener formulation based on polynomial matrices, and recent results to design and implement such systems with polynomial matrix tools. Applied to the MIMO PLC channel, the strong spectral dynamics of the PLC system together with the long impulse responses contained in the MIMO system result in problems, such that diagonlisation and spectral majorisation is mostly achieved in bands of high energy, while low-energy bands can resist any diagonalisation efforts. We introduce the subband approach in order to deal with this problem. A representative example using a simulated MIMO PLC channel is presented

How Much Do Fruits and Vegetables Cost?

Federal dietary guidance advises Americans to consume more vegetables and fruits because most Americans do not consume the recommended quantities or variety. Food prices, along with taste, convenience, income, and awareness of the link between diet and health, shape food choices. We used 2008 Nielsen Homescan data to estimate the average price at retail stores of a pound and an edible cup equivalent (or, for juices, a pint and an edible cup equivalent) of 153 commonly consumed fresh and processed fruits and vegetables. We found that average prices ranged from less than 20 cents per edible cup equivalent to more than 2perediblecupequivalent.Wealsofoundthat,in2008,anadultona2,000caloriedietcouldsatisfyrecommendationsforvegetableandfruitconsumptioninthe2010DietaryGuidelinesforAmericans(amountsandvariety)atanaveragepriceof2 per edible cup equivalent. We also found that, in 2008, an adult on a 2,000- calorie diet could satisfy recommendations for vegetable and fruit consumption in the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (amounts and variety) at an average price of 2 to $2.50 per day, or approximately 50 cents per edible cup equivalent.food prices, food budgeting, fruit and vegetable consumption, 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, Consumer/Household Economics, Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety,

The world wide web in modern marketing\u27s contribution to organisational performance

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide a better understanding of the antecedents of organisational performance (OP), both financial and marketing, and the influence of holding a strategic market orientation (MO) where customer-base volatility is taken into account. Design/methodology/approach – A sample of 167 marketing organisations in Australia was surveyed to test the hypothesised model. Structural equation modelling was employed in the data analysis. Findings – Use of the world wide web (Web) reported by organisations in this study indicates that there is still separate use of the Web and that it has yet to be fully integrated into the marketing strategy of many organisations. The study finds that traditional marketing effort mediates the relationship between holding a MO and OP in terms of financial indicators. Research limitations/implications – A major limitation of this study is that it surveys organisations from many industries rather than selected industries. This tends to mask some of the possible outcomes. Practical implications – The findings in this study suggest that traditional and online elements of marketing effort each mediate the influence of holding a MO on OP, but differently. Innovation culture is found to influence both marketing practice and marketing performance, directly. A single measure of environmental turbulence – customer-base turbulence or churn – negatively affects marketing performance, and ultimately financial performance. Originality/value – A major contribution of this study is the examination of use of the Web in marketing effort and how this usage influences financial and marketing performance.<br /

NFC, moral position, socialisation and ethical decision-making

Absolutism (deontology and teleology), moral relativism (individual moral position), and individual and environmental factors are at the crossroads of descriptive ethics research. For several decades, researchers have espoused teleological aspects, such as the punitive influence of codes of ethics, as managerial tools that enhance ethical conduct in organisations. The current study modelled the individual factors of need-for-cognition (NFC), individual moral position, and occupational socialisation as influences on the work-norms of marketers. The findings from a survey of marketers suggest that NFC influences the ethical idealism, professional socialisation, and work-norms of marketers positively. The research identifies that encouraging cognitive activities among marketers may be a useful alternative when developing appropriate deontological work-norms and decision-making under ethical conditions in marketing.<br /

Imiquimod triggering varicella zoster reactivation in an immunocompetent patient

Get PDF
Imiquimod is widely used for the treatment of superficial basal cell carcinoma as well as several other dermatologic conditions. While its local immunostimulatory action is well proven, its potential for systemic immunomodulation has been less well described. We report the first case (to our knowledge) of varicella zoster reactivation caused by Imiquimod in an immunocompetent patient.
