Cumulative Causation at Work: Intergenerational Transfers and Social Capital in a Spatially Varied Economy

    Get PDF
This paper models the dynamic of migration with a particular focus on the cumulative process that causes a variation in the distribution of income in sending communities and therefore a variation in the distribution of skills across different cohorts. The model provides a theoretical framework to Cumulative Causation theory of migration and specifically a theoretical rationale behind the use of migration prevalence ratio to study migration flows. Moreover the model shows how brain drain (in sending communities) and negative cohort effect in terms of education (in receiving communities) are the result of a positive selection of migrants in terms of skills if there is a intergenerational transmission of education

Revisiting Italian Emigration Before the Great War: A Test of the Standard Economic Model

    Get PDF
Among the many studies on migration before the Great War, Italy has received little attention, with a few notable exceptions and without providing a convincing explanation of its economic and demographic determinants. Standard neoclassical approaches explain emigration as driven by relative wages, relative employment rates and the stock of previous emigrants. We aim at improving on earlier contributions by covering all migration outflows from Italy to the most significant destination countries and by adopting the most consistent and up-to-date econometric approaches. As it turns out, the standard model is not fully confirmed and a more nuanced analysis is needed

The surveys banking and capital can also be made in respect of individuals who do not carry on a trade, or profession. To provide this strict interpretation, with respect to the findings on the data bank , it was the Supreme Court in its judgment recently filed 22514 (Judgment filed on 10.2.2013). The ruling stems from a further appeal by a taxpayer against whom investigations were carried out bank (in the action complained of, among other things, that the IRS could perform such an investigation only against entrepreneurs or professionals and not of individuals, as occurred in this case having acquired the data and items related to their personal accounts ), which reversed the decision of the second degree which gave reason to the taxpayer, stating that such a limitation of the scope of the regulations on banking inquiries, that is limited only to those engaged in business or professional activities, it appears devoid of any regulatory response. The issue addressed by the Supreme Court is particularly emblematic, and because it is often put into question the possibility of experiencing financial investigations through the broadest investigative formula, and because, at this time, were unannounced inspections for the purpose of synthetic / redditometrico also to individuals who do not necessarily carry out a business activity or profession . An introduction to the work of such wise that in later chapters will be developed with a more complete analysis of the relevant institution, aims to highlight how the law requires the execution of financial investigations , and therefore they are banking or asset, such as a tool overwhelming s ' to the now passed banking secrecy

The spatial distribution of a DEM altitude defined topography and attributes of interest he environmental modeling derived. In Sauce Corto basin flooding and waterlogging processes are a hazard to the population and its activities. Hydrologic-hydraulics modeling for the analysis of the problem, DEM is requires as base. For the study area are available DEM generated from various sources and it is desirable to know their differences in order to make a proper selection. Therefore, the aim of this work is to compare a DTM generated from 1:50.000 scale mapping and SRTM and ASTER products in the Sauce Corto basin. The topographical differences, slope and orientation between the DEM were analyzed and evaluated by statistical centrality and dispersion. Similarity between DTM and SRTM observed in altimetric and morphological terms.Fil: Campo, Alicia María. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. In a precarious context induced by a struggle for the essential, one term has re-emerged as indispensable, providing many of us with a new sense of direction, creation and sharing, and ultimately, like a boomerang, assuming the ‘austere’ dignity of that which cannot be renounced: the commons

Automatic analysis of speech F0 contour for the characterization of mood changes in bipolar patients

da inserireBipolar disorders are characterized by a mood swing, ranging from mania to depression. A system that could monitor and eventually predict these changes would be useful to improve therapy and avoid dangerous events. Speech might convey relevant information about subjects' mood and there is a growing interest to study its changes in presence of mood disorders. In this work we present an automatic method to characterize fundamental frequency (F0) dynamics in voiced part of syllables. The method performs a segmentation of voiced sounds from running speech samples and estimates two categories of features. The first category is borrowed from Taylor's Tilt intonational model. However, the meaning of the proposed features is different from the meaning of Taylor's ones since the former are estimated from all voiced segments without performing any analysis of intonation. A second category of features takes into account the speed of change of F0. In this work, the proposed features are first estimated from an emotional speech database. Then, an analysis on speech samples acquired from eleven psychiatric patients experiencing different mood states, and eighteen healthy control subjects is introduced. Subjects had to perform a text reading task and a picture commenting task. The results of the analysis on the emotional speech database indicate that the proposed features can discriminate between high and low arousal emotions. This was verified both at single subject and group level. An intra-subject analysis was performed on bipolar patients and it highlighted significant changes of the features with different mood states, although this was not observed for all the subjects. The directions of the changes estimated for different patients experiencing the same mood swing, were not coherent and were task-dependent. Interestingly, a single-subject analysis performed on healthy controls and on bipolar patients recorded twice with the same mood label, resulted in a very small number of significant differences. In particular a very good specificity was highlighted for the Taylor-inspired features and for a subset of the second category of features, thus strengthening the significance of the results obtained with patients. Even if the number of enrolled patients is small, this work suggests that the proposed features might give a relevant contribution to the demanding research field of speech-based mood classifiers. Moreover, the results here presented indicate that a model of speech changes in bipolar patients might be subject-specific and that a richer characterization of subject status could be necessary to explain the observed variability

Relationship between People's Interest in Medication Adherence, Health Literacy, and Self-Care: An Infodemiological Analysis in the Pre- and Post-COVID-19 Era

The prevalence of non-communicable diseases has risen sharply in recent years, particularly among older individuals who require complex drug regimens. Patients are increasingly required to manage their health through medication adherence and self-care, but about 50% of patients struggle to adhere to prescribed treatments. This study explored the relationship between interest in medication adherence, health literacy, and self-care and how it changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. We used Google Trends to measure relative search volumes (RSVs) for these three topics from 2012 to 2022. We found that interest in self-care increased the most over time, followed by health literacy and medication adherence. Direct correlations emerged between RSVs for medication adherence and health literacy (r = 0.674, p < 0.0001), medication adherence and self-care (r = 0.466, p < 0.0001), and health literacy and self-care (r = 0.545, p < 0.0001). After the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, interest in self-care significantly increased, and Latin countries showed a greater interest in self-care than other geographical areas. This study suggests that people are increasingly interested in managing their health, especially in the context of the recent pandemic, and that infodemiology may provide interesting information about the attitudes of the population toward chronic disease management
