    Eddy diffusivities of inertial particles in random Gaussian flows

    We investigate the large-scale transport of inertial particles. We derive explicit analytic expressions for the eddy diffusivities for generic Stokes times. These latter expressions are exact for any shear flow while they correspond to the leading contribution either in the deviation from the shear flow geometry or in the Peclet number of general random Gaussian velocity fields. Our explicit expressions allow us to investigate the role of inertia for such a class of flows and to make exact links with the analogous transport problem for tracer particles.Peer reviewe

    Integration of Sodium Metal Halide Energy Storage Systems in Telecommunication Microgrids: Performance Analysis of DC-DC Converter Topologies

    The present paper proposes an integrated method for modelling and designing Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) based on Sodium Metal Halide Batteries (SMHBs). The implementation of the proposed methodology for designing an SMHB-ESS used for supporting telecommunication DC microgrids is presented. The motivation concerning this specific case study is the role assumed by battery technology in improving the reliability and robustness of telecommunication DC microgrids. In this context, the SMHBs, due to their operative temperature, dynamic power response and robustness against cell breakdown, represent one of the most suitable technologies, mainly when challenging environmental conditions occur. The motivation for implementing an integrated design approach is the non-linear behaviour of SMHBs, which requires a high accuracy in battery modelling and in managing DC-DC interfacing for full SMHB capacity exploitation. To highlight the advantages of this novel approach, a comparison between the SMHB- ESS designs considering, as the DC-DC converter, a buck–boost topology actually implemented in the commercial systems and a Dual-Active-Bridge (DAB) converter, specifically developed for this kind of battery, was investigated. Considering different operating conditions in a specific DC telecommunication microgrid, the designed configurations of SMHB ESSs were simulated. Finally, a comparison of simulation results is presented and discussed, highlighting that DABs, despite their greater complexity compared to buck–boost converters, present advantages in terms of flexibility, dynamic performances and efficiency, increasing the available SMHB capacity by 10%

    Generalization of Taylor's formula to particles of arbitrary inertia

    One of the cornerstones of turbulent dispersion is the celebrated Taylor's formula. This formula expresses the rate of transport (i.e., the eddy diffusivity) of a tracer as a time integral of the fluid velocity autocorrelation function evaluated along the fluid particle trajectories. Here, we review the hypotheses which permit us to extend Taylor's formula to particles of any inertia. The hypotheses are independent of the details of the inertial particle model.     The Great pretender: the first case of septic shock due to Capnocytophaga canimorsus in Sardinia. A Case report and review of the literature

    Capnocytophaga canimorsus (C. canimorsus) is an emerging pathogen in critical care. C. canimorsus is a Gram-negative bacillus, commonly isolated as a commensal microorganism of the oral flora of healthy dogs and cats. A 63-year-old woman came to the emergency department with fever, chills, and malaise 2 days after a minor dog bite. After admission to the medicine ward, she developed respiratory failure and livedo reticularis. In the intensive care unit (ICU), she presented full-blown septic shock with thrombocytopenia, coagulopathy, severe acute kidney injury, and liver injury. We describe the first case of septic shock with Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome related to Capnocytophaga canimorsus infection in Sardinia and its treatment in a tertiary hospital ICU. We also review recent literature on the relevance of C. canimorsus in human disease and critical illness

    Association between High Normal TSH Levels and Obesity in Women with Anti-Thyroid Autoantibodies (ATAs)

    A positive correlation between Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) and Body Mass Index (BMI) has been reported in many studies, but data on this topic remain controversial, especially when TSH values are in the normal range. Moreover, few studies have evaluated the co-existence of thyroid autoimmunity. This study investigated the role of thyroid autoimmunity in the interconnection between TSH, BMI, and waist circumference (WC) in euthyroid patients with overweight or obesity. We enrolled 902 patients (213 males; mean age +/- SD: 45 +/- 14 years; mean BMI +/- SD: 35.8 +/- 6.5 kg/m(2)), with normal serum TSH concentration; anti-thyroid autoantibodies (ATAs) were evaluated in 752 patients (186 males). Patients were divided into four BMI classes, based on WHO criteria, and the relationship between BMI, WC, and TSH was evaluated in the whole sample and compared to ATAs positivity, observed in 235 patients (44 males). No significant difference was found between TSH levels in the BMI classes. A statistically significant correlation between TSH and BMI was found only in ATAs-positive females (N = 191, Spearman rho: 0.149; p-value: 0.040). However, this finding was not confirmed when considering the WC. Our study shows a positive correlation only between TSH and BMI in obese women with positive ATAs, suggesting that in these patients, the high normal levels of TSH could be attributed to a mild thyroid failure with a possible worsening obesity-related effect, and both need a careful evaluation

    Thyroid autoimmunity and hypothyroidism are associated with deep molecular response in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia on tyrosine kinase inhibitors

    Abstract Purpose: Thyroid alterations including de novo appearance of thyroid autoimmunity are adverse efects of tyrosine kinase inhibitors, used in solid and hematologic cancer therapy, but the relationship between thyroid alterations during this treatment and the outcome of chronic myeloid leukemia remains unclear. Aim of this study was to investigate whether the presence of thyroid alterations may afect the clinical outcome of chronic myeloid leukemia on tyrosine kinase inhibitors. Methods: We evaluated thyroid function and autoimmunity in 69 chronic myeloid leukemia patients on long-term therapy looking at the association between thyroid abnormalities and disease molecular response. Results: Overall, 24 of 69 (34.8%) had one or more thyroid abnormalities during therapy. A high percentage of patients (21/69, 30.4%) showed thyroid autoimmunity (positive thyroid autoantibodies with ultrasound hypoechogenicity), while clinical and subclinical hypothyroidism and subclinical hyperthyroidism were, respectively, found in 4 of 69 (5.8%) and 3 of 69 (4.3%) of cases. Second-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors resulted signifcantly associated (14/32, 43.7%) with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, compared to frst generation (7/37, 18.9%; p=0.03). Interestingly, we also found a signifcant association between euthyroid (14/26, 53.8%) and hypothyroid Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (4/26, 15.4%) in patients with deep molecular response, as compared to euthyroid (3/43, 7%; p=0.0001) and hypothyroid (0/43, 0%; p=0.02) Hashimoto’s thyroiditis patients with major molecular response. Conclusions: Our study confrms and extends our knowledge on the tyrosine kinase inhibitors efects on thyroid, showing that thyroid autoimmunity is frequently observed in chronic myeloid leukemia patients on long-term therapy and is associated with a better oncological response

    Positive effects of Nordic Walking on anthropometric and metabolic variables in women with type 2 diabetes mellitus

    Objectives. — Lack of physical activity predisposes people to chronic diseases including diabetes mellitus, obesity, and coronary artery diseases. Identifying forms of physical activity is warranted for prevention of these chronic diseases. Daily exercise has also been considered a significant contributing factor in the management of type 2 diabetes. Nordic Walking is shown to be easy to teach and learn, simple and adaptable to subjects with diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Nordic Walking allows training of about 90% of body muscles in the active propulsion phase, thus increasing energy expenditure by 30 to 50%. Aim of our study was to evaluate the effects of Nordic Walking structured training in a group of female patients with type 2 diabetes, looking at changes in anthropometric, metabolic and bioelectrical variables pre- and post-activities.     A programmable closed-loop recording and stimulating wireless system for behaving small laboratory animals

    A portable 16-channels microcontroller-based wireless system for a bi-directional interaction with the central nervous system is presented in this work. The device is designed to be used with freely behaving small laboratory animals and allows recording of spontaneous and evoked neural activity wirelessly transmitted and stored on a personal computer. Biphasic current stimuli with programmable duration, frequency and amplitude may be triggered in real-time on the basis of the recorded neural activity as well as by the animal behavior within a specifically designed experimental setup. An intuitive graphical user interface was developed to configure and to monitor the whole system. The system was successfully tested through bench tests and in vivo measurements on behaving rats chronically implanted with multi-channels microwire arrays

    Phytoremediation and the use of suitable amendments are well-known technologies for the mitigation of petroleum hydrocarbon (PHC) contaminations in terrestrial ecosystems. Our study is aimed at combining these two approaches to maximize their favorable effects. To this purpose, Helichrysum microphyllum subsp. tyrrhenicum, a Mediterranean shrub growing on sandy and semiarid soils, was selected. The weathered PHC-polluted matrix (3.3 ± 0.8 g kg−1 dry weight) from a disused industrial site was employed as the cultivation substrate with (WCAM) or without (UNAM) the addition and mixing of wood chips. Under the greenhouse conditions, the species showed a survival rate higher than 90% in the UNAM while the amendment administration restored the totality of the plant survival. At the end of the greenhouse test (nine months), the treatment with the wood chips significantly increased the moisture, dehydrogenase activity and abundance of the microbial populations of the PHC degraders in the substrate. Cogently, the residual amount of PHCs was significantly lower in the UNAM (3–92% of the initial quantity) than in the WCAM (3–14% of the initial quantity). Moreover, the crown diameter was significantly higher in the WCAM plants. Overall, the results establish the combined technology as a novel approach for landscaping and the bioremediation of sites chronically injured by PHC-weathered contaminations

    Haplotype affinities resolve a major component of goat (<i>Capra hircus</i>) MtDNA D-loop diversity and reveal specific features of the Sardinian stock

    Goat mtDNA haplogroup A is a poorly resolved lineage absorbing most of the overall diversity and is found in locations as distant as Eastern Asia and Southern Africa. Its phylogenetic dissection would cast light on an important portion of the spread of goat breeding. The aims of this work were 1) to provide an operational definition of meaningful mtDNA units within haplogroup A, 2) to investigate the mechanisms underlying the maintenance of diversity by considering the modes of selection operated by breeders and 3) to identify the peculiarities of Sardinian mtDNA types. We sequenced the mtDNA D-loop in a large sample of animals (1,591) which represents a non-trivial quota of the entire goat population of Sardinia. We found that Sardinia mirrors a large quota of mtDNA diversity of Western Eurasia in the number of variable sites, their mutational pattern and allele frequency. By using Bayesian analysis, a distance-based tree and a network analysis, we recognized demographically coherent groups of sequences identified by particular subsets of the variable positions. The results showed that this assignment system could be reproduced in other studies, capturing the greatest part of haplotype diversity. We identified haplotype groups overrepresented in Sardinian goats as a result of founder effects. We found that breeders maintain diversity of matrilines most likely through equalization of the reproductive potential. Moreover, the relevant amount of inter-farm mtDNA diversity found does not increase proportionally with distance. Our results illustrate the effects of breeding practices on the composition of maternal gene pool and identify mtDNA types that may be considered in projects aimed at retrieving the maternal component of the oldest breeds of Sardinia.</br
