    Time-frequency methods for coherent spectroscopy

    Time-frequency decomposition techniques, borrowed from the signal-processing field, have been adapted and applied to the analysis of 2D oscillating signals. While the Fourier-analysis techniques available so far are able to interpret the information content of the oscillating signal only in terms of its frequency components, the time-frequency transforms (TFT) proposed in this work can instead provide simultaneously frequency and time resolution, unveiling the dynamics of the relevant beating components, and supplying a valuable help in their interpretation. In order to fully exploit the potentiality of this method, several TFTs have been tested in the analysis of sample 2D data. Possible artifacts and sources of misinterpretation have been identified and discussed

    Global analysis of coherence and population dynamics in 2D electronic spectroscopy

    2D electronic spectroscopy is a widely exploited tool to study excited state dynamics. A high density of information is enclosed in 2D spectra. A crucial challenge is to objectively disentangle all the features of the third order optical signal. We propose a global analysis method based on the variable projection algorithm, which is able to reproduce simultaneously coherence and population dynamics of rephasing and non-rephasing contributions. Test measures at room temperature on a standard dye are used to validate the procedure and to discuss the advantages of the proposed methodology with respect to the currently employed analysis procedures

    POSFET tactile sensing arrays using CMOS technology

    This work presents fabrication and evaluation of novel POSFET (Piezoelectric Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor) devices based tactile sensing chip. In the newer version presented here, the tactile sensing chip has been fabricated using CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) technology. The chip consists of 4 x 4 POSFET touch sensing devices (or taxels) and both, the individual taxels and the array are designed to match spatio–temporal performance of the human fingertips. To detect contact events, the taxels utilize the contact forces induced change in the polarization level of piezoelectric polymer (and hence change in the induced channel current of MOS). The POSFET device on the chip have linear response in the tested dynamic contact forces range of 0.01–3 N and the sensitivity (without amplification) is 102.4 mV/N

    An exploration of the factors affecting the diffusion of advanced costing techniques: a comparative analysis of two surveys (1996-2005)

    The issue of cost calculation has been largely debated in the last years under the pressure of the perceived lost of relevance of the so called "traditional cost accounting approaches". The enthusiasm for new management accounting techniques has often driven most of attention towards technical or theoretical aspects of the proposed new cost models. In particular, Activity-Based Costing (ABC) implementation literature pinpoints a large number of studies that have looked at technical and organizational/behavioral factors that influence effective implementation. Recently a great attention has been paid by researchers on the contingent factors affecting the adoption of advanced management accounting techniques and the influence of the variables that drive towards higher levels of cost system sophistication. The need is felt for insightful studies regarding processes and contingent variables working through time in relation with these changes. Improved analysis can be obtained by undertaking replication studies based on larger number of responses and/or across geographic and cultural borders. Whitin the boundaries of a contingent framework analysis, this paper has provided additional insights into areas relating to factors influencing the level of sophistication of product cost systems in Italy. The paper presents the comparison of two survey results carried on in a ten years distance on the same sample of Italian largest companies. These two long-distance surveys provide the opportunity to assess the changes occurred in the companies that in 1996 declared the adoption of (or the interest in adopting) ABC and Target costing (Cinquini et al., 1999).Moreover, the time elapsed could allow the perception about adopters’ behavior, along different stages of the diffusion process of advanced costing techniques. The research findings pinpoint that only “importance of cost information” and “cost structure”, among the contextual variables considered in the more recent survey responses, are positive and significant in relation with increasing in implementation of advanced costing techniques. This outcome could open to further studies to assess whether or not adopters are moving from a “fad and fashion” behavior of the early stages, to a more rational approach in which the matching between management needs and tools potentiality is maximized.Management accounting innovations, Activity-Based Costing, Target costing, Product costing design, Cost system sophistication, Contingent factors

    Tactile sensing chips with POSFET array and integrated interface electronics

    This work presents the advanced version of novel POSFET (Piezoelectric Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor) devices based tactile sensing chip. The new version of the tactile sensing chip presented here comprises of a 4 x 4 array of POSFET touch sensing devices and integrated interface electronics (i.e. multiplexers, high compliance current sinks and voltage output buffers). The chip also includes four temperature diodes for the measurement of contact temperature. Various components on the chip have been characterized systematically and the overall operation of the tactile sensing system has been evaluated. With new design the POSFET devices have improved performance (i.e. linear response in the dynamic contact forces range of 0.01–3N and sensitivity (without amplification) of 102.4 mV/N), which is more than twice the performance of their previous implementations. The integrated interface electronics result in reduced interconnections which otherwise would be needed to connect the POSFET array with off-chip interface electronic circuitry. This research paves the way for CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) implementation of full on-chip tactile sensing systems based on POSFETs

    Modeled and observed soil moisture variability over a region of Argentina

    The aim of this study is to document how soil moisture variability is represented by global analyses and regional atmospheric models compared with a unique dataset of sparse measurements over an agricultural productive area of Argentina. Results show that normalized simulated soil moisture values and their temporal variability are largely different from the observations. However, there is a strong agreement among values derived using the same land surface model, suggesting a strong influence of the forcing fields used by the different analyses/simulations.
